I AM EVERY WOMAN. I AM BECOMING A TRIATHLETE. I AM THE FAT STRANGER. AND I am literally in tears laughing my butt off! Tears beacause I am reading this and this is so much like my story. Tears because Meredith Atwood’s writing style is so freakin halarious! I am only in the the very beginning of this book but have scanned every page and it is packed with amazing information. I really need to go to bed but I don’t want to put it down. I am training for my first triathalon in April and this book couldn’t have come at a better time, just when I was doubting myself. I have every Triathalon book on this Kindle under the sun and none of them compare to this book. Thank you Meredith for writing a book that speaks to me.

When I originally decided to enter my first triathlon in 2015, the first edition of "Triathlon for the Every Woman" was the very first book I read after the shock of "what have I just signed up for???" wore off and the Googling began. The most important thing that this book does is encourages its readers to cultivate not just the physical skills necessary to complete a triathlon, but also the mindset necessary to show up at the start line. It has the perfect balance of personal anecdotes, humor, expert advice, and "common sense" to help anyone safely get to that starting line - especially for average people with jobs, kids, bills, and stressful lives. It is because of books like this one that people are realizing more and more the power of connection in supporting physical and mental health, and that out there on the course are people of all shapes, sizes and ages right alongside the professionals. What other sport truly allows the privilege of this kind of connection? This fact shines through in Meredith's writing. Twenty-two triathlons later (including three half-Ironmans), I still follow Meredith's advice to be a student of triathlon; always learning and growing, and thus I eagerly awaited the second edition of this life-changing book. My favorite part of the second edition is the nutrition advice, and also the section on data for folks like me who enjoy seeing the success of their journey bear out in numbers and pairing this with how they are feeling in evaluating their progress. Reading the second edition reminded me to be mindful and appreciative of the amazing things my body can do when I really listen to it, and that the true reward is not the finisher's medal but the hard work and the journey in getting to that starting line.

I'm training for a half-Ironman this fall, and I have read every blog, book, and training guide I can get my hands on. This is the best thing I'v found so far. The writing is funny, accessible, and relatable. The advice is practical. She demystifies the training process and makes it clear the finishing a triathlon is not something reserved for Adonis-like lifelong athletes in fitness ads. I want to complete my race in a decent time, and I have to fit my training in between work and other responsibilities. If you want a book and training plan that will get you to Kona, well, this probably isn't that book. But if you're a woman who wants a swift kick in the bike shammy, a good laugh, AND some useful advice on how to approach tri successfully, this book is going to be my first recommendation.

Thank you Meredith for this book! When I first started this tri thing I was scared. Scared cause I didn’t know how to swim let alone swim, bike and run in the same event. I wasn’t fast and frankly I found this sport to be intimidating and I feared that I wouldn’t fit in. Then one day I get an email from my husband who tells me that I should look at this blog. It was Swim, Bike, Mom by the fabulous Meredith Atwood . I spent most of the day reading her posts and I started to feel that I wasn’t alone and I could possibly do this (maybe even an Ironman). I still ready her blog and I just received her new book in the mail. If your new to tri or want to try it out y’all should check this out.

This book is amazing! Meredith makes you laugh, cry and believe in yourself. You Can be a Triathlete no matter your size. It’s a mind set and she is instrumental in helping you achieve your goals. Great book and if you have even an inkling to know more about this sport - buy it.

LOVE. LOVE. LOVE this book! So much down to earth humor and truth for any woman who wants to make changes in her life and start into triathlon! I wish this book was around when I got into the sport to guide me. This book has all those details that elite/professional triathletes might gloss over or never even talk about. Meredith brings it all into the open and lays it out there for any beginner to gobble up and gain confidence that she can be a triathlete!

Love everything about this book - the story, the very practical tips, the honesty, and the hysterical laughs. This book (and Meredith’s blog) were a huge inspiration to me to start from nowhere and work my way up to an Ironman. Her philosophy of “just keep moving forward” is something I now use in all parts of my life and have been able to share with many. It’s an easy read, but also a reference manual - something you’ll return to time and again. It’s also comprehensive- there are so many aspects to triathlon, and she touches on all of them along her journey. Highly recommend!

I stayed up late to finish THE MAN SHE MARRIED because I had to LOL! This romance turned into a deadly cat & mouse game. Harper is an independent woman making the best of what she has. She’s smart, kind and realistically cautious. I like Brad for his confidence and plan to make Harper his wife. He is so patient - he takes his time with Harper when he knows that’s what she needs. The meat of this story happens after they're married. He doesn’t tell her the ugly stuff about his past and that omission will put their lives and relationship in jeopardy. Harper questions whether she can live in his world. Brad will do anything to make her stay. Their wedding vows will be tested. Good supporting characters - family, friends & enemies. Passionate scenes and violence. Some small grammatical errors. There are a couple of instances when I was surprised Brad didn’t hurt someone who offended Harper. Perhaps this was an example of his self-control. I liked this story. It was more than I expected, engrossing from the beginning. Worth the price!

I Really loved this book. Brad is so different from any other hero, that To be have written. I love all of Toye's books. She is an automatic 1click for me always.

This book had potential but didn’t quite make it. Most of the book was anticlimactic. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters and, it was hard to follow during some of the scenes. I didn’t like this one.

Been a minute since I've read anything from Ms Brown. I enjoyed this story. I " h" did work my nerves there for a minute when she considered leaving Brad..But I read on to the end. At the end is where I found a lot of typo's. It's like they were anxious to finish the book and made dumb mistakes

This is my first time reading a book by this author, and I found it to be an entertaining read. The characters were engaging, despite a few annoying reactions by the h. I would like to read stories about the other men in the book.

Brad was from a mafia family and he married Harper without telling her. He can no longer hide the situation after a fight with his stepfather. Harper begs for his life and it comes back to bite them. Harper was too weak and didn't want to face reality and Brad was too wrapped up in Harper to handle his business.

New author to me and I liked this book. The plot was believable. The love scenes were hot and not over the top. Will check out more from this author.

Really enjoyed this book. Hope this is first in a series with the other characters. If not, looking forward to other books by ms Brown

About the Author

Abraham Verghese is Professor and Vice Chair for the Theory and Practice of Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine. The founding director of the Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, he is the author of My Own Country, a 1994 National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist and a Time Best Book of the Year; The Tennis Partner, a New York Times Notable Book; and, most recently, the critically acclaimed novel Cutting for Stone, which was a national bestseller. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, his essays and short stories have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, Esquire, Granta, The Wall Street Journal, and elsewhere. In 2016 Verghese received a National Humanities Medal from President Obama. He lives in Palo Alto, California.

I was born in Ethiopia in 1950 to missionaries with the American Mission. Much of this story took place in Addis Ababa. I could see the sights and smell the food. I wept at parts, shook my head in dismay at parts. I thought Haile Selassie was my grandfather when I was a little girl, so I have a hard time with negative views of him. When he came to the states to visit Jack & Jackie, he flew into the Philadelphia airport, then boarded a Train to arrive in DC with all the fanfare appropriate for royalty. My dad took us down onto the tarmack at the airport to greet the Emperor when he got off the plane and into his limo! The protocol officer was annoyed, but my mother was able to have words with the Emperor's Aide.

It took me about 1/3 the way through this book to get into it. I was seriously at the point of giving up. I stayed with it and was very moved. Similar emotional invocation as the Kite Runner, except not as good. I could do without the life lessons through surgical procedure. Although I related and empathized with Marion and life, I could have done without the details of surgery. Half clinical and really tedious.

If you have a medical background or work in hospitals you will LOVE this book. I am not from or in that world. SO at times I really got discouraged/distracted by the medical episodes - BUT I stuck with it, and have to say it was a brilliantly written story. Dr Verghese didn't forget ONE CHARACTER detail from the beginning to the end, and wove the story together in such a beautiful integrate way. Bravo!

Cutting for Stone is Abraham Verghese's big, bloated panorama of 20th century Ethiopia, where medicine and religion meet, and surgeons and Carmelite nuns procreate. The book is a roller coaster ride of agonies and ecstasies that too often relies heavily on coincidence to move the plot along. Add to the end result a rather annoying voice of an omniscient narrator (vividly detailing his breach birth, for example), a marvelous ability to evoke atmosphere and some interesting detail about medicine, and the result is a bouillabaisse of a book, with a few questionable ingredients.After Thomas Stone and Sister Mary Joseph Praise create their twin progeny Shiva/Marion, CFS slows down for a few hundred pages, exploring the mystic cords (umbilical and otherwise) that bind. Not that it is bad, just too much of a bland thing at times. The second third off the book sets a languorous pace too that takes 150 pages to get the boys to puberty. It would be unfair to say the book bogs down, but it definitely would have benefited from a quicker pace or editing.The last third is the exact opposite--a series of frenetic coincidences and crises that occasionally seem contrived or created solely to wring every last tear from the reader. Some of it works, other times I found myself rolling my eyes. It was during one of these more implausible instances that it occurred to me the author--for better and for worse--reminds me of Charles Dickens, whom I quite like. Warts and all.

Dr. Verghese.The book brings out various facets of the country and gives a good perspective of the society for readers to understand and appreciate the ways of life. The turbulence therein has been interwoven so well with the lives of the characters of the story to make a gripping reading. Even though it is not a thriller and given that it is loaded with high technical stuff on medicine and surgery, still I found it difficult to stop my reading at any point. And there were so many details interspersed into the writing, which made it very difficult for me to rush through the pages. So, it was like a strong cup of coffee, the bitterness kept me from finishing it fast, but the taste kept me wanting for more.It also threw some philosophical angle for what one carries through the life and how the unspoken torments. How the slipper just refuses to leave your feet, unless you look down and acknowledge it in the first place. And also that it’s the noble end which matters, noble means does not.I would highly recommend this book for all my friends

This is one of my favorite books ever. I listened to it so much on CD (Sunil Malhotra is superb!) that I wore out the box in which they came! I finally decided to purchase the digital version.I own the actual book, yet I always listen to it rather than actually read it. The writing and the performance demonstrate the true value of reading aloud. English is “alive,” and listening to this Verghese’s words in performance by Mr. Malhotra satisfies many times over.

During my initial first few minutes of listening I realized that Stephen Covey wasn't the main speaker on this tape (he narrates some sections). Suddenly I thought maybe the quality would be mediocre. That this would be some cranked out product just to make a buck. I was wrong. I listened to all 3 CD's (the 4th is a computer demo) and enjoyed the presentation highly.Steve Jones is the person who gives presentation. I believe it is a recorded live process. What I liked about this alot is it covered all of the Franklin Covey time management principles in a very focussed manner (hence the title...??).This CD series serves as an excellent refresher or introduction to the principles of managing your time. They introduce the time quadrants and explain in pretty good detail how to use paper, PDA or computer planners to manage your time. The sessions never bog down in any one area and they move from topic to topic at just about the right pace.Obviously this CD set has some ties to the services and courses offered by Franklin Covey. They'd love it if you registered for the full course or bought a $200 planner/binder. However the course on tape/CD will standalone quite well. The speaker is clear and has a good delivery. I enjoyed this and found the time passed quickly (which doesn't always happen) as I was listening. Buy this - you won't be sorry!

After reading his book "First Things First," I felt I needed an additional resource to grasp fully the principles he was presenting. I recommend it highly for anyone wanting to get a basic understanding of Covey's life-changing techniques.

The Conquering Tide includes 542 pages of text that are richly textured and nuanced. One is tempted to devour this book quickly as it is entirely engrossing, and yet most passages are so rich as to invite multiple readings.Throughout the book one is struck by the fine balancing between coverage of all U.S. military services and both sides of the war—ours and the Japanese. While the U.S. Navy shines throughout like the beacon of freedom it was, the massive efforts and victories achieved by the marines, army and air force are given careful attention. The bombardment scenes are show stoppers, but only until one turns the page. "From the decks of the American ships, the bombardment of Betio presented a dazzling spectacle. Orange-red muzzle flashes lit up the sea in a quarter circle to the south and west of the island. The shells whistled like freight trains and drew incandescent arcs across the night sky. The entire length of Betio blazed like a funeral pyre. Sheets of flame ascended hundreds of feet in the air… The marines cheered wildly at each successive blast.”Our submarine force is provided glowing credit for the sometimes relatively unheralded work they did, which was badly undermined by extremely poorly performing torpedoes early in the war. As Toll notes, “By war’s end, the Pacific submarine force would sink more than 1,100 marus, amounting to more aggregate tonnage than Japan had possessed on December 7, 1941. With fewer than 2% of all naval personnel, the submariners could claim credit for more than half of all Japanese ships sunk during the war, and 60 percent of the aggregate tonnage.”All the top brass are given due attention, so fans of King, Nimitz, Spruance, Turner, Vandegrift and the rest probably won’t be disappointed, but special attention is also given to numerous more junior officers and rank and file sailors and airmen. Toll is a master at weaving diary quotes, letter excerpts, news media material and much more into his narrative. Battles that one suspects one already understood, such as those in the Solomons and Marianas, are brought to life with such vibrancy that one almost feels like taking a shower after each chapter to clean off the cumulative grime and, often enough, gore. One thrills to the story of Lt. Ralph Hanks’ exploits off Tarawa on November 23, 1943, when he became an “ace in a day” by destroying five Japanese warplanes in his Hellcat. In one flight! One recoils, in contrast, at the details surrounding Enterprise’s great Air Group commander Edward “Butch” O’Hare’s tragic loss in a confusing and complex battle a few nights later. One struggles to imagine Chicago’s O’Hare airport being named for anyone else.Not content to merely march through the Pacific war’s string of battles and strategy machinations, Toll also provides fascinating insight into how in the world Japan even attempted to manage the flow of increasingly negative war information that ultimately made the emperor appear to be stark naked in the face of an eventually overpowering Allied foe. Each peek we get is fascinating: “An independent writer who fell out of favor found that editors no longer took his calls or acknowledged his submissions. Recidivist offenders were hauled away to prison to be beaten, tortured, starved, and incarcerated indefinitely. A reporter whose byline appeared above an impertinent article might find himself drafted into the army and shipped to the front lines, without military training, the following day.”Beyond all this, Toll’s book is replete with excellent maps and reference material and includes an excellent deck of photos. The reader is transported to a time and place like no other in the hands of a master. Six stars.

Ever since I became aware this spring of the release of the second installment of Ian Toll's narrative of the war in the pacific, I have eagerly anticipated this release much as I would the release of a new CD from my favorite artist or the anticipation of a must-see movie. (I was fortunate enough to acquire a copy of THE CONQUERING TIDE at my local bookseller a few days before the book's official release date).THE CONQUERING TIDE, WAR IN THE PACIFIC, 1942-1944 is the second installment of a projected three-part chronicle of that war following up the critically acclaimed and highly satisfactory PACIFIC CRUCIBLE, WAR AT SEA IN THE PACIFIC, 1941-1942. I've read this first book twice finding it to be superb - history writing at its finest.THE CONQUERING TIDE is every bit superb and satisfactory as its predecessor. I won't take the space to describe the contents of the book here. Suffice it to say that this book deals with the beginning of the American offensive at Guadalcanal to the irreversible defeat the Allies handed the Japanese in the Marianas.As a writer, Toll has the capacity to bring the story alive, to make you feel as if "you are there." For example, the author gives a description of Nimitz's flight aboard a PB2Y Coronado flying boat to Guadalcanal during that campaign for an inspection tour. After describing the challenges of navigating over vast expanses of ocean, Toll writes, "Nothing provided a more visceral sense of the immensity of the Pacific than flying across it in a World War II-era aircraft." Indeed. Flying across that vast expanse in a modern airliner is adequately daunting.Toll engages the reader immediately in the prologue with the story of Martin Clemens and the role he played in warning the Allies of Japanese activity on Guadalcanal. Toll's clarity and lucid prose describing events occurring over 70 years ago has an immediacy that gives the reader a sense of reading a newspaper story of events that happened yesterday. You get a sense of what it was like to be in San Francisco or Honolulu in the early 1940s (in many ways not too different than it is now in the case of the latter), or what is was like to be onboard the USS Wahoo submarine with an aggressive skipper whose sanity his shipmates questioned (The fascinating and successful exploits of the USS Wahoo are used as a showcase for the silent service).Toll has the capacity to provide a micro perspective of a particular campaign, of Guadalcanal in the Solomons for example - what the day-to-day existence of a Marine at Lunga Point was like - but then widens the lens to give a rendering of the military/political atmosphere in Washington D.C., i.e. which theater should get the most immediate attention, the European or the Pacific. Later the author focuses the lens closely again and takes us along with Admirals Nimitz and Spruance (both of whom the reader becomes well acquainted with throughout the book) as they travel to Oahu's North Shore for swimming and hiking, or listening to classical music records together in the evening sitting in armchairs. This is just the sort of detail that I love reading about in history books. It provides the necessary reprieve from the narrative of the many grueling campaigns.I look forward to continuing to read and learning about this period of the Pacific Campaign. I highly recommend this book to students of World War II in general and of the Pacific War in particular.
