NOTE: I wrote this review from the perspective of someone who read the first book and then bought this book to learn new things. If you have never read the first book you might find this book more useful than I did. Depending on your level of expertise, however, you might want to buy the first book over this one. Complete beginners will find the first book easier to follow. That being said I find the quality of content and presentation in this book to exceed the first. Therefore, if you are more comfortable with lighting and or would like to take a deep plunge into lighting go with this one. Now for the reviewThis book is much better than the first book by the same author titled Master Lighting Guide. It offers a more in depth higher quality presentation of studio lighting. Hence, the author attempts to provide the reader with a solid understanding of studio lighting principles. The first section focuses on explaining, with plenty of pictures, the relationship between light physical size and relative size, distance, spread depth, and feathering.The second section consists of 20 topics or so that put the principles stated above into practice. Some are very unique and new like the inverse relation between specularity and size of softbox or the nature of umbrellas and how they differ from softboxes. That last topic is a full departure from the previous book in which the author leaves the impression that both modifiers -softboxes and umbrellas- are very similar when in reality they are not. Another great topic is about how to position a light meter for proper reading. That topic can eliminate much frustration with aiming light meters.There are other section that seem to have been pretty much lifted from the previous book like the simulated sunlight topic which offers nothing more than one new but minor technique. A couple other topics don't add much like the topic about Why Strip Lights are so Cool which sounds very cool until you read it and realize that it pretty much adds nothing more than few extra pages to the book.I think the book is very good, but very short and in a sense comes across as an incomplete work. I can't say the same about the first book which I felt was the opposite, complete in the range of topics but poor in quality of material. I still bought the first book anyway because it was the only available reference at the time. Given this book is short and covers many similar topics, but in a better way, I wonder why the author did not consider adding the new content of this book to the first book in a revised and expanded edition instead of a new book. That would have created a complete and excellent quality book that has no match on the market today.I recommend the book to advanced amateurs and new professionals but I also recommended checking it in a bookstore first because some might not find it very valuable. It's just not one of those books that you can give full 5 stars and a blind buy it right away recommendation.One last note: the author refers to softboxes sizes as 4x6 large, 3x4 medium, and 2x3 small. This designation might be confusing for people when they go to buy softboxes based on his recommendation. Many major softboxes manufacturers including Creative Light and Photoflex label 4x6 extra large, 3x4 large, and 2x3 medium. Chimera on the other hand goes by the same designations the author is using.

This supplements his first book quite nicely. I have recently taken it upon myself to learn to use my lighting equipment properly. This was one area in which I was never trained. He writes this book assuming you know something about exposure and metering. It moves quickly, beats no subjects into the ground, and covers all the basics with excellent picture references. I highly recommend it! Now, where'd I put my light meter....

I have read Mr. Grey's work before so when I purchased some studio lights recently I went looking for a book to assist me. When I found this book I stopped looking.The examples are excellent (photos and diagrams) and as always the text is informative and easy to understand.I highly recommend this book to anyone getting started with studio lighting. Learn from a master photographer!

As a classroom instructor of photography for twenty years, I appreciate the basic info that Chris Grey has compiled in his two lighting guides. This studio guide was a natural addition to my classroom required reading and reference book collection. Customers should consider his first book "Master Lighting Guide for Portrait Photographers" as "part 1" of this collection.

The book is very easy to follow with good photo examples. I keep the book as a reference and great source for inspiration. If I can't figure out how to do a lighting situation or run into a problem with my setup I find my answers in this book. I look forward to buying more books from Christopher Grey as his writing is down-to-earth and educational.

Christopher Grey's studio lighting is an excellent reference book for beginners or the full time pro. Beautifully illustrated with color photos showing high key, low key solutions with optional modifiers. How to use flash meter, sequence shots showing same head with short lighting, broad lighting,loop,rembrandt, and butterfly. Depth of light, hair and feathering. umbrellas, soft boxes strip boxes and his favorite large book end reflector panels. This is fine companion to his other books.

As someone who has been intimidated by this subject and taken refuge in the mantra 'available light is always best' this book was a revelation. I realised recently that most of the portraits I really like had usually employed some type of strobe lighting in a very subtle manner. This book has given me the insight into the techniques that might hopefully elevate my work to a new level.

Firstly, the story of Oak Island is a full of many people such as explorers, investors etc. So it does not come as a shock there are many characters to follow. This is especially true since the author has included all the history since it’s discovery in late 1700s. However, I found it very bogged down with many details, some I found unnecessary. I was also disappointed that while he gave extensive details on theories, he completely glazed past the ivory whistle that had been found on the island. Previous to reading this book, I had never heard of the ivory whistle and I consider myself a big fan of the show. He mentions it once and gives no details of how it was found, who found it and where it is now. These details is what interests me about the entire conspiracy. I am less interested in every little detail of how big the shafts were created. The extensive history he gives on every theory (and there is many many theories) lost me. I became bored over this far fetched and wordy description. I love history but even as a history fanatic, the relation to the history he provided and Oak Island was far stretched. Overall, it was very hard to follow and I found unorganized in thought. Perhaps he could have organized each chapter by a time period of exploration. This would have made things more clear. He jumped around so much it was not enjoyable to read.

Randall Sullivan has gone above all expectations and delivered The Most in depth history of Oak Island written to date. He gives an honest inside look at the past and present treasure hunt on Oak Island and this is a MUST READ for any Oak Island enthusiast! The book is filled with facts and Randall took his Rolling Stone article and built a literary monument of a book. His style is so palatable that even pages and pages of accounts of past bore holes are intriguing again and each theory is weighed realisticly and with solid facts. I’ve followed Oak Island for a while now and I absolutely enjoyed every page of this book! This is the real story behind the hit tv show also, and the Truth about the people behind it and the people involved in the hunt. Sullivan is an excellent & experienced writer, highly recommend it.

The book was well researched and well written. It flows well without dragging. The book covers the 200+ year long history of the search of/for the Money Pit through the current TV show with the Laginas. This book fills in a lot of the details that are mentioned only briefly on the show. The book also does a good job of tying together pertinent information. Like why finding Shaft 6 could be an important break thru in relocating the Money Pit's location lost since the collapse in 1861.Sullivan does a great job in debunking some of the more dubious theories presented by both past treasure hunters and in the War Room guest theorist episodes. The historical research and explanation of the possible involvement of Francis Bacon is well done. Good read, highly recommended.

I was looking forward to this book.. I have seen some of the episodes of the series, The Curse of Oak Island, but not all of them. Mr. Sullivan did tons of research , I found the book a little lacking. I would have liked more information about the men, past and present who obsessed about the Money Pit, and more about the archaeological dig. It was a valiant effort on Mr. Sullivan's part. Just wished the book had a little more meat to it.

Having watched nearly every episode of The Curse of Oak Island I decided to buy this book after seeing the author on the show. The book is very well researched and mentions details that are not in the show. The only complaint I have is the chapter on Francis Bacon; it is way too long. I nearly lost interest part way through that chapter. I would liked to have read more about the current search and the people involved.

If you only read one book about Oak Island, this is it. Describes the history from the beginning, the people, the theories, the books, major articles, and the amazing finds recently made that literally influence the history of this continent.For all the "dry" aspect of the history the author does an excellent job of putting excitement and intrigue into the story. I was not disappointed and highly recommend this book even if you have been a faithful follower of the show as have I. Many insights into the show and events surrounding the making of it. GREAT book!!!!

A great read. Yes, it's full of details. The book is very well written and takes the reader through 200 plus years of information up to the present day TV show. For those of you who had negative comments about the book, I'm not quite sure you actually read it. Kudos to Mr. Sullivan, a job well done.

I almost didn't buy this book because I read an unfavorable review on another website. For an Oak Island aficionado, this book could be required reading. It is extremely informative and the author develops the timeline of events in an authentic manner that reflects the research he has done. The tie-ins to the television show are entertaining without distracting from the overall story. I could wish for maps and pictures. I hope he will be able to issue a new edition when the Lagina brothers find the treasure.

I've seen some other slightly negative comments about this book not being the 'Bible' of Redline Collecting and while it isn't, I give it 5 Stars simply for the beautiful Color photos throughout the book. This book is not a Price Guide at all and doesn't claim to be altho it mentions rarities in the features/colors of the different lines. The book is more of a photo History of the cars/developers/designers by Year. If you had Redline's in your youth and love these diecast Cars you need to get this book! Every page in full color and most photos of all Cars are beautiful 3 - 6 inch blown-up closeups! Not one black/white pic in the whole book. I just received my copy today (Jan/2012)and the Hardcover book jacket says $30.00 US and $36.00 CANADA. My copy here on Amazon was $1.68 plus shipping. Any Hot Wheel lover will love the pictures/eye candy but will regret that their Mother probably sold your whole box of them for a quarter before anybody knew that they'd forever be in Toy History and the prices they'd fetch on Ebay today (not that I'd sell any if I still had them!) Buy a copy before they run out! (got mine from Urbookstore1 and it arrived very quickly)

My son is a self-proclaimed hot wheels collector. He enjoys learning everything he can about the toy and the company. I bought this book to help him gain skills in reading non-fiction material, which takes very different skills than one uses when reading fiction. The book is large with full-color glossy pages throughout. Great information and history of the toy.

If you enjoy early Hot Wheels, you'll love the many, many photos in this hardcover book. Very informative, too. It brings back some some fun memories.I did have some shipping issues, however. But that's not supposed to be covered here. So for the book itself, 5 stars.

I have never been disappointed with Rose Publishing Company products, and this pamphlet is no exception! It is one of the best "quick" studies on the Feast of LORD I've been privileged to own. A lot of information in an easy to read format. The size is perfect for Bible totes, purses or bookbags. It whets the appetite to dig further into the Biblical study and revelation of what Paul called the "rich root of the olive tree..." (Romans 11:17-18) I am very appreciative of the fact that Hanukkah and Purim were included. Although they are not Feasts of the "LORD," (see Lev. 23) we need to be aware that if the events surrounding these two Feasts had come to pass, the Jewish people would have ceased to exist...if that had happened there would be no Tribe of Judah and with no Tribe of Judah, there would be no Lion of the Tribe of Judah. How faithful is our Covenant keeping God and how beautiful and seamless is the whole of God's Word!

Really beautiful pamphlet. I intend to study it in depth along with a book about the blood moons that mentions these holidays. As Christians growing up, we were not taught about these holidays and not taught to keep them. Now at 65, I am beginning to see their importance relating to the coming of the Lord.

This is a powerful teaching tool that can be used as a handout that shows the significance of the Biblical feasts and why they are important today. It can easily stored in one's Bible. For most of the church they have been dismissed as "Jewish" feasts and so we do not need to know about them, but this is incorrect on two points. To completely understand our faith it is imperative that we understand our Jewish roots of faith and to embrace them. Secondly, these are not "Jewish" feasts, but rather Feasts of the Lord that God established for all people for all time. This is a quick way to obtain a initial understanding of them, how they point to Jesus, and how they apply to us today.

Quick shipping and I love the break downs of each feast. I just wished they gave examples on how to celebrate them today. I consult the scriptures as much as possible but this something I will have to pray about.

Knowing that this is non-fiction and the everyday suspense makes this a great read. Anyone contemplating a sailing adventure could use this as a how to or not to instruction guide. It read like a novel, it reminded me of Tristan Jones. I really enjoyed the chapter by chapter adventure and looked forward to the next leg of their journey. I usually have two books going at one time, Kindle and Audible. I focused on this book until I finished it. I find it amazing that ordinary people can have such adventures. A real life adventure over 7 years. This is not a trip to Cabo for a two week vacation. This is true life threatening, on the edge real adventure. I loved it.....

As a liveaboard and soon-to-be-cruiser, I read a lot of sailing books. “Escape from the Ordinary” is my favorite, by far.Julie Bradley writes with enjoyably telling detail about destinations we hope to visit (the Bahamas, the Galapagos, French Polynesia) and shares hard-earned wisdom regarding weathering storms and traversing the Panama Canal.I laughed and gasped as I raced through her pages, and will re-read this book again as we make similar tracks.Looking forward to reading her next book upon its release!

This book is so much fun to read, I had a hard time putting it down. Julie is a terrific writer. I loved learning about other places and cultures I never knew existed.I asked all local libraries in my area to order the book so others can enjoy.I can’t wait for her sequel: “Crossing Pirate Waters”.

I think what draws people to this book is the extreme admiration for these modern day pioneers. We admire those that would give up a comfortable life, sell everything and embark on an adventure into the unknown. Secretly, we wish we had it in us, but life, fear, jobs, money or whatever creates roadblocks. What courage they must have had to follow this dream! So many places, so many adventures, and lessons learned. All along, because of Julie's descriptions, you are thinking, "How would I have handled that?" "What would I have done?" I love that it's written from a woman's point of view; and from someone who had little sailing experience. I recommend it highly!

An excellent first book from author Julie Bradley. The book is equal parts adventure, social commentary, history lesson, the natural world, and moments of self-reflection. You definitely don’t have to be a sailor to enjoy the tales of life on and off “It’s Enough”. Julie uses some sailing and boating terminology but explains each one in landlubber terms for the uninitiated. While the descriptions of surviving bad storms may turn some people away from a sailing life the descriptions of the various islands and countries she and Glen visited will probably prompt a few to book a flight somewhere they’ve not heard of before. You’ll certainly have a list of places to go to and places, perhaps, to avoid. Enjoy.

Fascinating story that many of us have dreamed about but would have been better with more technical details about the boat, the planning and the decisions that had to be made. Written by the wife so it is mostly about the cool stuff and the things they saw and did. It probably would have been more interesting for me as a sailor if it had been written by the husband, Glen who seemed like a great and very competent guy. Minor flaw but there were a lot of typos also. Probably won't read the sequel.

Julie's writing style is mesmerizing and educational for those of us that didn't make an opportunity to see the world on a sailboat. Jack could not put this book down and especially appreciated the history and description of each stop they explored. We both have great admiration for their teamwork, perseverance, and strength. Thank you for sharing your life details with us.

I loved "Escape from the Ordinary". The novel reveals the good and the not so good things that happened to two delightful people who decided to chuck it all, and on their own term, go see and really experience places not in the typical individual's world adventure travel map. It was a read that I could not put down until the end. Throughout my journey with the Bradley's via my Kindle, I kept thinking ; would I have the nerve to tackle this this? I think not! I am looking forward for the sequel.
