It was pretty good and gave me some history of what went on before..Since I am a pretty new fan (started watching the 13th incarnation -a woman) who I adore by the way. I didn't know anything except he/she was the last of the time lords/ and something happened to all the others..I liked the pics But I'm not sure the pics corresponded to the descriptions..Some pics were of women but described as a male and vice versa which was very confusing to a newbie like me..This is one of the reasons I gave it a 4..plus sentences were repeated over and over again which was quite annoying. As a fast introduction into the Dr. Who mythos it does sort of fit the bill. As the above states it could have been a bit clearer on the characters/labeling would have been nice on some pics..I am glad I read it though and probably will read it again cause it was alot of info to wrap my head around lol.So unless U watched this series from the beginning or have lots of moola to watch all the episodes this is a beginner point.

I enjoyed this book although it was a little confusing at times. I did not start watching Doctor Who until the 9th doctor, so I knew very little about the time war and Gallifrey. This book helped to provide that background information.

Well written, I have most of the episodes from the first and this provided much continuity that is often just assumed between episodes. It covered the highlights and main trends but didn't go into some details - no doubt due to space. - or time - or perhaps lack of a TARDIS

Loads of information about all things Time Lordish! Spans all the Doctor Who series, which is the main reason I love it. GREAT source of canon! I've learned a lot about the Time Lords, considering how long Doctor Who history has gone on -- very hard for a relatively new Whovian like me to glean all the info over a relatively short time. Great artwork too (in the print edition, which I also have).

This was a good "timeline" (get it?) of the Time Lords of Gallifrey. We all know how confusing their history/past/present can be. Some of the writing glosses over important details, but for the most part captures what I was looking for as I tried to make sense of some of the points in past and present stories.

This is supposed to be brand new and came scuffed at the corners and torn inside. Very upsetting.

Fills in gaps. It would be nice if we could have a comprehensive history of the Galaxy some... millennium or so...

This book got me thinking about hate speech and the power of words..."tolerance..." on the other side of the spectrum. Every pendulum swings both ways people...hmmm, just saying.I know Dekker himself says read his books any old way- But I would read them in order (Showdown, Saint, Sinner) and have em' fresh on your mind if possible... Marsuvess Black returns for the "trip."I think that 'Sinner' is the third book in the 'Paradise' trilogy...Sinner is written as two books (Book 1 and Book 2)

`Sinner' is a Ted Dekker novel set within a non-sequential series called `The Books of History Chronicles.' It is the third and final of the `Paradise Novels', a trilogy within the series. `Sinner' takes place 13 years after the first book, and a few years after the second, bringing back the familiar characters of Billy, Darcy, and Johnny. Each is a survivor of a well intentioned though misguided (and I would say theologically unnecessary) experiment on 36 children, testing whether or not individuals completely secluded from the influences of the world and exposed only to truth, beauty, and goodness could essentially say "no" to the forbidden fruit of our existence.Once again, I want to emphasize that these books are best read sequentially, despite the author's claim that any order is as good as another.I wanted to like this book, especially in light of the very important reality that the author exposes here; that under the banner of "tolerance", we are in danger in the U.S. of losing our religious freedoms. It is as if to say, "...and in the end there remains faith, hope, and love--and the greatest of these is tolerance..." It seems that the "tolerance police" want us to be open to all beliefs and persuasions EXCEPT those that might be considered conservative, traditional, and/or Christian. Dekker does a great job in showing how the expansion of the definition of "hate speech" eventually covers the life-changing message of the Gospel. Christ taught not `tolerance', but Love, and for some reason we chose to nail Love to a cross. Love and Truth are inseparable, and that comes through loud and clear in this story.That being said, I would have to say this is the weakest of the six Dekker books I have read--at least in its writing style. When one writes a screenplay, he/she has the benefit of cinematography (the scenery, camera angles & movement, lighting, etc.), acting/directing, and especially background music to establish the tone and emotional "feel" of the scene. A novel writer, however, has to set the atmosphere and mood on his/her own; I don't feel that the time was taken to do that here, which made many of the scenarios and character actions feel more than a bit contrived.As well, the great Christian metaphors and analogies that I think have been Dekker's forte were either missing or so spelled out that they lost their power--a power which often derives from their subtlety (a good metaphor is stealthy in its ability to get under one's mental defenses before revealing itself ). The Christian `teaching' in this book also stepped over the line into "preaching," with the overtness of the character dialogue. As a Christian myself, I didn't have a problem with this because I wholeheartedly agree with the message, but I say this as an observation that I am sure non-believers (there certainly must be a segment of them among Dekker's followers) would probably find this difficult.One final observation which I think I would describe more as concerning than anything else, was the several allusions to the "Roman Catholic Church" that were made. For a time, I thought the author was resorting to the "cheap-controversy-to-sell-books" way of Dan Brown (i.e. the Catholic Church is conspiratorial and anyone who it sees as a danger it will "eliminate"). The characters espousing a negative take on the Catholic Church turn out to be unsavory themselves, but the thought never really gets played out in the book.So overall, I certainly enjoyed the series, and feel it is a worthwhile saga. I just wonder with Dekker becoming such a prolific writer, and with the speed which these popular books are being churned out, that perhaps some of his craftsmanship is not being given sufficient time and thought to fully develop each novel.Other books that Ted Dekker fans may enjoy:THE COSMIC TRILOGY: Out of the Silent Planet; Perelandra; That Hideous Strength (From C.S. Lewis, the master of Christian allegory within fantasy and sci-fi genre's)Father Elijah: An Apocalypse (O'Brien's 'Children of the Last Days' series deals with many of the same end times and political issues as Dekker)Dominion I: Seed (A 7 book Christian supernatural/apocalyptic thriller series)

I truly did not like this book. Yes, I gave it five stars, it's well written and thought provoking, but in light of the current climate with bakers being told leave your faith at home it really bugged me that someone would just give up the freedoms we cherish.

The topic of the world putting pressure on Christian to compromise in the name of tolerance was excellent. However, the story line is simply ridiculous. I read this work in conclusion to the other Paradise novels, and it was the best of a bad lot. Dekker, does however, speak more of coming to Christ in this book more than in any that I have read by him.

A completely unbiased review of this book: It is excellent fiction. The story moves quickly, the writing is simple and descriptive, there is excellent characterization and an interesting plot that leaves the reader wanting to move on in the series.

Intersting story much like all of Dekkers books, and although Black is one of the main characters it connects only loosly to the other books. I think Black is a great char. and therefore this could have been strounger and much darker.

When looking at "tolerance", and accept anything and everything, at some point, things will unravel in society. What happens then and what happens when someone is willing to stand up and start saying some things are just not acceptable... EXCELLENT reading for these current times.

It was very poorly edited with many punctuation and grammatical mistakes. I wondered if anyone at all had done any editing. The story got long with convoluted plots. I have come to expect better work than this from Ted Dekker

Just like the other Gail Gibbons sports books, this book does a great job introducing the basics of the game to a child without getting bogged down in too many rules. It holds my child's attention so that he can understand what the game is about and the basic concepts. It doesn't go through the whole 9 innings (thankfully!) but still tells the child about the players, some of the rules, the baseball diamond and how to score.

I didn't pay attention to the dimensions described, so I was surprised to see that the book was smaller than I expected. However, this book is a great resource for young baseball fans. It is eligible for the nonfiction reading requirement for my first grader, who sometimes appreciates a break from historical or biographical topics.

Perfect for my young grandsons who knew little about baseball. Written at their level of understanding. We then went outside and had a great time simulating a game!

Excellent book for children, plus restores interest & knowledge in baseball for the older folks.

I bought this for my son's fourth birthday last year. He loves baseball and I thought this would be a book that was both entertaining and educational.He loved it. We read it everynight for about two weeks and he began to understand what the different positions and rules were.It is a year later and we still read it occassionally just for the fun of it.

While receiving my Pastoral Theology degree at Moody Bible Institute I decided to go above the minimum class requirements on a book report and choose more of a graduate level reading. I stumbled onto this book by Philip Jenkins, an amazing author who isn't afraid to challenge and discuss tough topics. This has to be one of my favorite books written by him. I love how his unique writing style allows him to include a wealth of information on each page.

Very interesting, and lots of information.

This books examines the claims that the (mostly Gnostic) texts found at Nag Hammadi after World War II represent an early and therefore viably alternative version of Christianity compared to what has been long considered orthodox. The finding: these are not early, but late second or even third century writings, condemned in their own time, which, in the way of the gnostics, do not consider historical fact - particularly the Resurrection - to be of any consequence. The most telling part to me is that this was well known around the turn of the last century (circa 1900), even with articles in mass circulation periodicals on the subject, and the statements from, e.g., Elaine Pagels, that Nag Hammadi is an opportunity to see, "for the first time," this theology, is patently false. Even more concerning is that our modern "scholars" in that camp must know this. It reminds me of a session in a Christian ethics class at a church-related college in Iowa in the sixties, when I pointed out to the instructor (a pastor and PhD) that the human heartbeat began three weeks after conception (the topic was abortion and the information on the heartbeat came from an embryology class I was taking). The professor gave me a long stare and then said he simply could not believe it. He did not inquire with the biology professor afterwards to correct the impression left with the class.As Dr. Jenkins has shown, a liturgical and patriarchal structure was present in the church from the earliest days (re patriarchal - feminism was as big in second century heterodoxy as it is today). However, he is one of those curious Anglicans who want to be more Catholic than the Pope - he thinks this structure means that the Council of Trent was right. His idea that validation of apostolic authority is also validation of the necessity for apostolic succession is a non sequitor. Finally, he seems to be unable to let loose of the possibility that Q, a hypothetical ur-gospel, must exist somewhere, and the truly aberrant notion that the Gospel of Thomas, which has no mention of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, was somehow a means of evangelizing the Greeks before letting them in on the real story.

The main theme of this is a debunking of the claims made for the so-called "new gospels" included in archeological finds of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Publicity seeking historians have aggressively claimed that the "gospel of Thomas", etc. were created significantly earlier than the New Testament gospels, therefore making them a truer representation of the words and deeds of Jesus, and his wishes for His Church. Jenkins methodically gathers the available scientific evidence to show that these 'gospels' were actually composed much later than the ones in Scripture and were actually written to promote concepts later labeled as heretical (Gnosticism, Arianism, etc.) or to discredit Christianity itself.But like a toy in a Cracker Jack box, I found an unexpected treat in Chapter 7 where Jenkins shows how the majority of female "professors of religious studies" actually view themselves as professors of dyke political propaganda. If you are a devout Christian, you will be happy with the purchase of this book, but you should NOT be happy if your daughter tells you she is picking religious studies as her major.

This book comments on recent archeological discoveries of documents about Jesus that were written in the early Christian centuries and their importance compared to the canonical Gospels. His analysis of the media events generated by such discoveries is particularly sharp.

This book is more of a defense of established Christianity and how it's seemingly lost its appeal than an open-minded discussion of the impact on recently unearthed, hidden gospels and their impact on the religion. I was disappointed in it because it's not at all what I had hope it would be.
