My big takeaway from this book: While there are 500 channels on TV, there are a vastly larger number of companies, some very clever, trying to figure out ways to update, enrich, and monetize the viewing experience. Wolk has provided an authoritative survey of the television ecosystem. Along with being well written, I found the book inspiring. It gave me hope that the industry will keep churning out great content like The Wire and Walking Dead, and keep figuring out better ways to deliver that content to consumers. I personally look forward to that day in the not-so-distant future when I can speak into my phone, “I want to watch the Sopranos show where Big Pussy gets whacked,” and an intelligent engine will locate that very episode and in seconds I’ll be watching it. Apparently, that and a million other changes are in the works. Wolk’s excellent book provides a fun and thought-provoking sneak peak.

This wonderful tome of information, analysis, and conjecture is a bargain if ever there was one. The material covers all the major areas of content, licensing, rights, devices, platforms, and distribution...where it's gone, where it is, and where it's going.There's a hint of snark at the true impact & strategy of how social companies will play into the television experience of the future (with an admitted slant against Twitter), but it makes for a more well-rounded discussion.

Mr. Wolk's book is a highly informative read that lays out the current state of Television's evolution in easy-to-understand terms, benefiting both the industry insider and the novice new to the topic. Everyone from studio executives to Jr. Account Planners should read this book. The changes brewing in this space have massive implications over the coming 10+ years; huge businesses will expand and contract, the levers of power will be turned on their heads and everyone involved (particularly at ad agencies) will need to retool their skill-set. This book is a great place to start that process.

The TV business was a complex maze even without digital. Add the internet video revolution, and it's perplexity itself. Like a 3D maze. Alan Wolk's book is a 'must read' - particularly if your job requires that you 'must know'! Wolk is provocative, informed and articulate. His take on the future of TV business is a definitive starting point for readers that need to get up to speed fast on the dizzying events happening in the business of television.

My streak of reading really good books lately continues with this one. I took a chance when this was on sale awhile back since the story sounded intriguing and the cover art drew me in. The story revolves around the Bird family who inhabits a comfortable home in the Cotswolds. The mother, Lorelei, is full of a youthful exuberance that seems to be more childish than childlike at times. The four children are raised in this "perfect" family, but the cracks in the foundation are felt even when not yet seen. Told in the present day when the family is coming together to bury Lorelei, there are flashbacks to events over the years along with emails Lorelei has been exchanging with a friend she met online which give a glimpse into her final weeks.There is a feeling of tension and suspense as the reader tries to piece together what has transpired to change this family from a close-knit one to a family geographically scattered and emotionally estranged.A great read that is hard to put down once started. Subject matter of hoarding is explored with sensitivity and a lack of sensationalism that I very much appreciated. Loved it from beginning to end.

This was one of the best books that I have read this year. Beautifully written, it introduces the reader to the Bird family who live in a picturesque village in the Cotswalds in a charming house. The slightly eccentric Lorelei lives there with her husband, Colin, with their four children. They appear to lead an almost idyllic existence, happy in each others company. They even have an ongoing family tradition: annual Easter egg hunts. They seem to be an almost enviable family, until one day something happens that will change each of their lives profoundly.How their lives change and what happens to them and why is revealed slowly and inexorably.The author expertly and delicately peels the layers back for the reader, advancing the heartbreaking family drama that unfolds. Central to it all is Lorelei, whose life goes so out of control that she is unable to help her husband or her children, much less herself. This book is a sensitive look at why people end up as they are. Sometimes, they end up as collateral damage, when their mother finds herself unable to cope with the unkindest cut of all.This is a a sensitively drawn portrait of a family in so much pain, it goes off the rails. It is about how its individual members find ways of coping with that pain, even if they do not fully understand how or why they got to that point in the first place. The author brilliantly brings it all to a head in the final denouement that makes the reasons for all that happened to this family come together in one moment of startling clarity. Bravo!

I did not want to put this book down. I would read until the wee hours of the morning. The story had my attention - but I was tired, so I forced myself to put it aside. I didn't want to finish it with only half my brain working. The sacrifice was worth it; finding out how the Bird family becomes so fractured was compelling.The story is told through a series of flashbacks and from different family members point of view, in third person. Despite this, the story was not confusing at all.Jewell did a masterful job of creating sympathy for each of the characters - flaws (and oh, they have them) and all.

Throughout the reading of this novel, I wavered between a one-star rating to a five-star rating. At the end, I gave into a three-star rating. Some parts of the story were remarkable especially the ability of the author to bring in six (then only five) different personalities each "talking" about each of their own lives as children and as adults. And what a mess of a family! Each member could be its own soap opera. So many issues thrown at the reader with little guidance as to how to sort through it all. At times I simply wanted to stop reading and archive the book. Yet somehow (due to the author's writing -- or my own sorry curiosity), I felt compelled to discover what came next with this family. Finally finished. I put down the book and shook my head that all seemed to be just fine. All was sorted and forgiven as long as family could come together and love each other. Maybe I needed more information as to how the members managed to resolve all their single and multiple issues. Or maybe the family decided not to resolve anything -- rather simply to accept life at the present and move on. So, compelling writing that pushed along a messy/complex plot. I left the book thinking I learned little and gained nothing in the reading.

The House We Grew Up In is a very thought provoking, brilliantly written book! I'm so glad I found this book and will have to read Lisa Jewell's other Novels. I love British authors their wit and style of writing is straight forward and funny. However this story is about a hoarder, collector of rubbish which is a serious issue of mental illness. The book immediately draws you into this completely dysfunctional family you will not be able to put it down. I come from a detached broken family. Yet, when when mom was around in our younger years we were all so close! It was easy to relate to the Bird family . The story is heart breaking at times. No matter how bizarre things get with this family it's written in a compassionate, tender way. You can't pick your family but love and life's lessons seems to get them through all the craziness. Very unique topic which is written in a tender loving way!

I originally read this book years ago and have since also read "Sicario", which is an excellent book on the Narcos and their inner workings.Since I first read it I decided to skim through it again and it still stands I think as one of the best books out there on the ongoing Mexican Drug War. Grillo digs deep, really deep, to unearth as much as they can about the Narco gangs. He collected a lot of information and got it from a wide variety of sources. From lowest ranks of the cartels; the mules and the street dealers up to the enforcers, to the people who battle them from Mexican journalists to American DEA agents. What is revealed is a very bloody machine that continues to make Mexico one of the deadliest places in the world.First he starts with the earliest traces of drug smuggling in Mexico's history which is really fascinating. We see the introduction of opium to Mexico by Chinese smugglers and eventually the earliest smuggling of marijuana (which was the Cartel's biggest cash cow) during the Mexican Revolution of the 1900s. As well as the older "dons" from Sinaloa who controlled Mexico's narcotic black market in the 1980s and 90s during the big cocaine boom of the time. However, that beast was completely different from the one we see now. Somewhere along the line this old power structure died and violence just exploded in Mexico putting it on part with the violence in Afghanistan.Thats about the time when Grillo first entered the scene. He goes into Mexico from Texas to learn as much as he can. He talks to street dealers in Mexico's border towns, interviews a an ex-police officer turned Cartel enforcer in prison, he talks to mules and hitmen in Colombia. Its really fascinating in a morbid way to see this Narco culture at a ground level. Some of the more eccentric details of the Narco lifestyle involve commissioning Corrido folk bands to make ballads for them, the lavish mausoleums they build for themselves (knowing it seems what their line work inevitably leads to).Some of the most shocking revelations though are the levels of corruption we see in Mexico that make this bloody ecosystem of open street warfare possible. Cops routinely end up dead often because it turns out they are Cartel enforcers themselves. Corrupt politicians aid the gangs however they can while honest politicians are assassinated in broad daylight. Despite the monumental efforts of American agencies like the DEA their task seems almost pointless. Which lead to a question I had when I first got this; what does America have to do with it? Grillo seems to answer, a lot. To put it bluntly the economy that helps the Cartels stay afloat and profitable is this; Mexican marijuana and heroin go north, American dollars and guns go south.Since this book was released Grillo seemed to be correct in that legalization would effect the bottomline of the Cartels. Since US states like Colorado have legalized recreational use of it, which is a growing trend in American politics, the Cartels have taken a massive hit in their profit margins. Still though the war rages. Despite the dramatic "Zero Dark Thirty"-esque capture of El Chapo Guzman the Sinaloa gangs continue to thrive. With the assassination of Javier Valdez and the kidnapping of student protesters; its apparent the Cartels are still very much alive.If you'd like to get a better understanding of the Mexican Drug War, I recommend picking up El Narco.

El Narco is a gripping history of the Mexican drug cartels. Grillo is an experts on the drug cartels and their history. Although Grillo is British he seems to have spent much of his life covering the cartels. A Mexican writer who penned such an exhaustive history would probably have been killed. Perhaps because Grillo writes in english, he has not been targeted.In the United States we have a number of euphemistic wars. We have wars on poverty and cancer. President Richard Nixon was the first to proclaim the war on some drugs. In Mexico the drug war is not a euphemism. Tens of thousands of people have died in Mexico as a result of the drug cartels, many of them killed in horrible ways.Years ago, when the Mexican PRI political party was still solidly in control of Mexico, I traveled in Mexico on several occasions. I have also known many Mexican people in the United States. The Mexican culture and people are not a culture that I would think of as being capable of extreme barbarity. Yet El Narco is a story of the extreme barbarity that has warped Mexican society. The barbaric acts that the Islamic State has become infamous for, beheading, mass execution and exploitation of women, may have been pioneered by the drug cartels.El Narco is an account of a failed state that is unable to resist the drug cartels. The barbarity and corruption of the cartel insurgency in Mexico cannot be entirely blamed on external forces.There was a time when the Mexican government made sure that serious crime did not impact the tourist areas. Those days are over. Gun battles have taken place in ll of the major tourist areas, either between the drug cartels or between a cartel and the Federal government. Scaring away tourists may not matter much to the Mexican economy anymore since the flow of money from drugs is larger than tourism. I will never step foot in Mexico again.When I was traveling through Ensenada the tour guide pointed to a seaside housing development. She said that the houses cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and many belonged to Americans. Buying expensive real estate in a compromised state like Mexico seems to be either an act of ignorance of denial ("the drug war will not affect me").The narco insurgency (as Grillo describes it) is easy to ignore since on the surface Mexico seems like a functional second world country. Stores sell international brands like Samsung and people go about their day to day lives. Until the narco insurgency reaches out and touches your life.Grillo writes about the narco cartels branching out from narcotics into kidnapping and protection. In the cities where the cartels are active, according to Grillo, businesses are forced to pay a "tax" to the cartels.The thought experiment that I suggest for a North American who has or is thinking about buying real estate in Mexico is this: If someone comes to you and tells you that you will be paying a monthly "mordida", what recourse do you have other than paying? Going to the police will probably be ineffective since they may be working for the people shaking you down.An even worse scenario could be that you or someone in your family is kidnapped. Grillo has terrifying and tragic accounts of Mexican families who have had a family member kidnapped. Being an North American is does not immunize you crimes like this.The Mexican government bitterly objects to the characterization of Mexico as a failed state. While Mexico will probably never reach the level of failure that Somalia has, the rule of law, which is the foundation of a functioning state, has failed in the Mexico described by Ioan Grillo.The United States and Mexican governments do manage to capture or kill drug lords. What El Narco makes clear is that as each drug lord is taken out, a new one takes their place. As the South American cocaine producers and the Mexican Narcos have become more efficient, the cost of drugs had dropped. The billions that the United States DEA spends combating drugs has had no effect in the decades since President Nixon first declared the start of the War on Drugs. El Narco is not only a history of violence but a history of massive policy failure.At the end of El Narco Ioan Grillo writes that the only thing that has succeeded in reducing the money that the cartels take in is the legalization and decriminalization of Marijuana. Medical Marijuana is available in a number of states and several states of legalized it. As this has happened, the market for smuggled Marijuana has started to dry up.Ioan Grillo's book El Narco is well worth reading. For those who would prefer an accurate fictional account, I highly recommend Don Winslow's books The Power of the Dog and its sequel The Cartel. Don Winslow's book so closely follow the events recounted in El Narco that they could be labeled historical fiction.

Excelente Herramienta! Se lo Recomiendo a cualquier persona que desea escudriñar las escrituras mas a fondo.

Este testamento lo uso con frecuencia pues utiliza el Codex Receptus que tiene menos errores que otros. Como quizás el lector sabe que en el griego no se escribe igual que en español, así que a diferencia de la version interlineal de La Cueva, éste le indica la palabra inicial de cada oración o frase poniendo en mayúscula la letra que corresponde en español.Tiene referencias al fin de la página donde indica con números en potencia (subscritos) las diferencias con otros códices o traducciones. ¡Se lo recomiendo!

Este libro es una buena herramienta, no solamente para comprobar si lo que otros enseñan es correcto, sino también para probar a otras sectas que su "biblia" esta totalmente manipulada. Si deseamos estar verdaderamente preparados para dar prueba de nuestra fe, yo les recomiendo que adquieran este valiosa herramienta.

Me parece que no agrega ningún valor en relación con las biblias interlineales gratuitas que están en la web.

Like Moses descending the mountaintop with the Ten Commandments, Larry Elder, in this libertarian manifesto, seeks to lead his people out of the slavery of entitlement into the promised land of opportunity. Elder's ten taboos of political correctness translate into a latter day gospel of individual morality filtering down to one golden rule: thou shalt take responsibility for thyself. The book takes on all comers: welfare cheats, criminals, teenage mothers, youth gangs, the AFL-CIO, Medicare, the liberally biased media, and the two party system. It is the "victicrats", those well-meaning operatives of the American left, who occupy the lowest rung in Elder's pantheon of oppressors. From Hillary Clinton to Ted Kennedy, Alton Maddox to Maxine Waters, Elder deconstructs motive and policy to reveal how society's most prominent "leaders" conspire, accidentally or not, in holding citizenry down in a mire of self pity and entitlement. The book starts out with an indictment of black "leadership" and attitudes, and the first chapters are a clarion call for self-respect and personal responsibility. Elder topples a lot of totems in the first pages,but much old ground is trodden when he examines the pernicious effects of AFDC on the black (don't tell Elder to use "African-American") family. The revelations of the moral bankruptcy of Al Sharpton aren't exactly a transformative experience, either. Later, when he delves into a more wide ranging discussion of Libertarianism and its implications, things really get interesting. He offers a trenchant examination of the US health care system, the most understandable that this reader has ever encountered. The chapter on the war on drugs could convert Nancy Reagan to the cause. Gun control advocates have never had such an effective foe. The greatest weaknesses in the book come when Elder is at his most self-serving. He gives a weak argument for why he benefited from affirmative action while he would deny it to others. His indictment of the media includes such specious claims as the one that "they know nothing about the laws of economics." Since he's now a prominent member of the media, he would do well to back up such statements with at least some evidence. In the vast majority of the book, Elder uses statistics and anecdotal evidence to devasting effect. If for this reason only, he needs to apply this technique more evenly throughout this interesting work. Even with such weaknesses, Larry Elder has shown us the way on a journey to a greater humanity, and for that he deserves our rapt attention.

Good book. Political correctness has distorted American thought and culture more than I had previously realized. It's good to be diplomatic, tactful, nice, and so on, but when we lose sight of easily evident truths, we are the poorer for it. This book seemed a little disorganized, or perhaps hastily written at times, but is a great thought provoker. You don't have to agree with everything he says to get a welcome fresh perspective.

My only beef about this book is that I waited too long to purchase it. It was written during the 2000 campaign, and meant as a tocsin for those times. Who knows what a more powerful book the author could have produced after 9/11, increased government spending (by a Republican president!), and more of the same "political correctness" he writes about.Although I have not yet read it, I suspect he does so so in his second book, "Showdown," published in 2003. He certainly spares neither Democrats or Republicans in "The Ten Things You Can't Say in America" (one of the "things you can't say" is that "there isn't a dime's worth of difference" between the two parties, a suspicion I've had ever since James Carville got engaged to Mary Matalin). But "Ten Things" does suffer a tad from a lack of aging well, and a betting person might do well to invest in "Showdown", instead.As to Elder's philosophies,I find them well-reasoned and discussed. While the first 2/3 of the book reads as an indictment to the "minority-focused" liberal, who might be shocked to see the sacred cows of affirmative action, multiculturalism, welfare, and others skewered by Mr. Elder's logic, the self-congratulating conservative might find themselves skewered themselves by the equally well-argued final third, which discusses abortion (Mr. Elder advocates access to it); legalization of drugs (he's for it); and the tendency of conservative politicians to want to legislate morality(he is against that, and muses at how that goes against the stated conservative goal to keep government out of our lives).I learned of "Ten Things" from a conservative publication, and expected it to simply trumpet my own values. Instead, although I did learn better arguments for some of the things I believe, I did find myself challenged in areas often thought of as "liberal territory". For these reasons I do recommend you listen to what Elder has to say, but be aware this book uses older, sometimes resolved arguments to help him do it.

Larry Elder says the 10 Things You Can't Say in America, and says them well. But I gave the book only three stars because I have heard all 10 things before. Many people have said them before, even though it takes courage to say them out loud. What I would like to hear are some meaningful, workable solutions.Like many Conservatives and and Libertarians, Mr. Elder is very good at identifying the problems and their root causes, but not so good at identifying real solutions. The Social Security system may be broken, but I don't think that we will ever drop the system. So the question is how do we fix it? The same is true with many of the other problems described in the book.Perhaps the best sections of the book are those that deal with the "vicitcrat" mentality that has developed in America over the last few decades. Today, it seems that you are disfunctional, or delusional if you are not the hopeless, helpless victim of an evil oppressor. Responsible, high-functioning individuals are just not "normal," or they are one of the oppressors. Overcoming your problems is not fashionable. Elder does an excellent job of explaining how destructive this victim-thinking is. Giving people an excuse to fail is never a good idea. Paying them to fail (through welfare, etc) is even worse.I recommend this book because it is a well written description of some of the most serious problems in America today. I just wish it helped me to know how to fix it all.

The concept of having a popular US product, such as Nike footwear, manufactured in Asia can also be a way to subliminally advertise it in that continent. The same would hold true if NBA shirts were manufactured in Nigeria.Dell Computers are used as an example in the book for the outsourcing of administration, not just manufacturing. If payroll recording and processing are outsourced, the company is no longer responsible for it. For a huge corporation, payroll can run up a big bill in work hours and effort, but if you hire another company to handle payroll, you rid yourself of the responsibility. You’ll cut out the middlemen and have more time for other things.The book also covers rubrics and contracts. Everything must be clearly outlined, and it must be clear, according to the contract, as to who assume liability. You don’t want to outsource to a company in Bangladesh and get sued because they used child labor and stole their wages. Delivery of good requires a contract, because you don’t want to find out at the last minute that the foreign made Nikes require passive import duty, thanks to a tariff on goods from that country.While this book was definitely thorough, I would have like to see more case studies and examples of outsourcing being used. It’s being used for computer support services, with great success, and even 30 years ago it was used by manufacturers who moved some of their factories to Asia. Outsourcing has spread to other industries, such as medicine, with US citizens travelling to India for heart surgery and to Thailand for sex changes. There’s even a scholarship fund that sends minority students from the USA to study medicine in Cuba. Perhaps we’ll soon see education being outsourced too?

Outsourcing has been a major change in how business is conducted especially during the last couple of decades. I was looking for a book that brings together all the elements that are essential for a comprehensive understanding of this major shift in how we conduct business.This book is a great resource that provides a holistic understanding of the subject with examples of how different questions and issues relating to outsourcing have been and can be answered depending on the circumstances e.g. Off-shore Operating models - 4 models with assessment of set up/financial risk as well as level of operational control are provided.I found very useful and entertaining the '10 myths about outsourcing' section at the beginning of the book where concrete answers are provided and misconceptions are dispelled. This assists in the better understanding and definition of what Outsourcing stands for but also in discussing and clarifying myths that promote Outsourcing as the modern panacea for business e.g. see Myth 4 - Outsource your problems. :)The authors' use of statistics and matrices are superb as for every issue they bring a lot of different options to the table equipping the reader to make his/her own combinations customising solutions for every unique situation.I found Part 2: A Program of Action- The Outsourcing Lifecycle, particularly helpful as it provides a model for thinking through the outsourcing process. The authors take the subject a step further when towards the end of the book they discuss 'advanced [best] practices' that should be more commonly used e.g. workflow and governance tools.Although the book touches upon contract management matters I would recommend Sarah Cullen’s - The Contract Scorecard book as a useful companion that provides a more comprehensive guide on contract management.Overall, Outsourcing - All You Need To Know is highly recommended as a great guide and reference for paving the path for successful outsourcing.
