Some praise him for saving the country from Communism. Others stress that he rode the coattails of Hitler and Mussolini to power, which he misused, a man who felt his own way was the only right way, who stressed the “Christian Civilization†even on his death bed. He insisted on the “traditional role†for women, meaning they were restricted to only certain tasks.Hourly History gives us good information about this man. Among much else, we learn that: He was the longest running dictator in history. He was the dictator of Spain for 36 years. He was a borderline fascist. He killed many of his opponents, between 15,000 and 50,000 people. He tried to control Spain even after his death.
Although understanding that a biography can not easily be disclosed in depth in a 40 minutes reading book format, I must say that, in my opinion, this is just a "political correct" focused work, well far away from the actual biography of the subject. You can feel this approach after the first 10 lines. Many and important events from different sides missed(?)absolutely critical to understand that difficult time in Spain,s History.Everybody knows that General Franco was a dictator for 36 years. There is no much more deployed in this work that could help to understand the dictator,s personality besides de classic cruelty in the aftermath of the war and those things.Dissapointing.
Though not quite a 5 star rating, this overview of Spain's Franco is somewhere between 4 and 5 stars. Nicely written and informative, a nice view of a piece of history. The man, Franco, contending he was a supporter of Christendom, was rather UN-Christian-like in his rise to power, was an able military man, sometimes Statesman and conflicted human being. As with almost any country, the introduction of some form of a free-market process usually improves a country's economics, as is the case with Spain under Franco in his waning years. Great man? Not so sure, but a couple of things in his favor; his resistance to Hitler and his slowly giving into the idea of a democracy.
Sums up his life rather succinctly but (somehow) just does not leave the reader with a clear 'picture' of the man himself.Could also do with better proof-reading to clear up a bunch of grammatical mistakes in the use of words, punctuation, etc....
Ruthless yet effective would be a succinct version of the book. Most writers and arists, coming as many do from the leftist fringe, have focused on the period of the Spanish Civil War and Franco's seldom-denied harshness. The book does well in showing those 4 years as part of a 40-year strategy of keeping Spain out of foreign entanglements. An excellent short biography.
Although well written, this Hourly History Book is almost exactly like another Hour History Book titled Spanish Civil War. Both books tells how Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin interfered with the War. They tested their weapons and personnel during The Spanish Civil War.
A short but thorough history of Franco, the man ,the leader The Spain !He was quite brilliant and wary of outsiders.Courted by both the Axis Powers and the Alies, he was able to stay somewhat neutral and survive.
Clearly written, interesting, succinct story of Spain's brutal military leader and dictator during Spain's civil war, through WWII, and his death in 1975. This book, coupled with Hourly History's book on the Spanish Civil War provide an excellent overview on Spain from the 1930s to 1975.
