And this text is perfect for this purpose!It describes what were the preconditions (logistics) for Wikipedia: the technology that had to be invented and repurposed, the very specific community that started to develop it, the freedom of cyberspace ideas& computer hacker ethic that underlined those attempts. The author provides both this information and some broader context - phenomena that developed before or in parallel to that of Wikipedia (such as Usenet, Netnews). I wasn't previously aware of several false starts (Nupedia; Wikipedia editing problems etc.), the specific policies that were developed (such as "neutral point of view"; a policy regarding automatons; soft code of conduct etc.) and the ways how the conflicts had been solved when someone is in disagreement on some point about the content of articles (for example, inclusionists and deletionists; Gdansk/Danzig story and the way in which the compromise was reached) or is there to vandalize. It was also nice to learn a new useful term - stigmergy!What I found most useful about this book: the description on how the rules of Wikipedia were created and then developed throughout the years and the cultural differences in setting or applying them (English vs Japanese vs German version).Two ideas that most stuck in my mind having read the book: 1) generally people intend to help and can be relied on; 2) Vote-aversion of this community: "Don't vote on everything, and if you can help it, don't vote on anything!"I learned so much from this book so, although it is dated, I easily give it 5 stars.

I tell my college students that while they shouldn't typically quote Wikipedia as a primary or even secondary source, it's becoming an important place, for many topics, to begin your research, since it often directs readers to the primary sources. It should certainly be consulted as one of many types of encyclopedias/websites, having its own set of advantages and disadvantages. For example, many supposedly authoritative medical sites rely on outdated information and don't tend to document their sources. The Wiki method allows people worldwide to include some of the latest studies, allowing readers to find some of the most important peer-reviewed studies.

`The Wikipedia Revolution` (2009) is probably the first serious attempt at a book-length history of Wikipedia. Unfortunately Andrew Lih is not a trained historian, it is a journalistic account with more reporting and synthesis than original interpretation. However it is still a quick and interesting read, even if Lih is a devout Wikipedian. Certain sections stand out: the history of Ward Cunningham who invented the Wiki software; the history of Larry Sanger and his role as "co-founder" (or not, depending, but it is not resolved here). The role of Usenet, Hypercard, Slashdot and MeatballWiki in the formation of early Wikipedia. A glimpse into the vastly different cultures of Japanese, Chinese, German and other foreign language Wikipedias. An overview of some (in)famous incidents such as Seigenthaler and Essjay. Lih appears to have researched the book mostly using archival sources - I was disappointed not to find new interviews with Wales, Sanger or any number of others - it takes away from the books value in the long term as a primary source, a missed opportunity to add to the historical record.There is a short Introduction by Jimmy Wales which is a standard stump speech heard many times before. The Afterword contains a crowd-sourced essay on the future of Wikipedia and it does contain a meaty examination of the difficult issues facing Wikipedia now and in the future. I found it to be surprisingly good. The Afterword is released under a Creative Commons BY license so it's freely available to copy - it's odd Lih did not point to where it can be found online. [UPDATE: see "Comments" below for a URL]I would recommend this book for anyone who has been a long time member of Wikipedia and wants to learn more about 'a history experienced' over the past 8 years or so. There is so much that could be said about Wikipedia this book just grazes the surface but it's a good entry into what will certainly becoming a growing library of books about Wikipedia in the future.

I bought this for my mother who currently reads Readers Digest large print with no problem. Apparently there is no uniformity in what they call large print because the print in this book is about half the size of Readers Digest Large Print

Bought this to read to my elderly mother, but many of the stories were depressing, told of losing loved ones, death, etc. I can't read these to her! I thought they would be sweet stories but these were a bummer. It would have cost about $5 to return, so it's just a bad experience all around.

Love Philip Gulley's tales! He's like a Quaker Garrison Keillor with the same astute observations on human nature, small town life, colorful neighbors, and just the wonders of life in general. Not at all sappy or syrupy. Poignant, funny, and very witty. If you want to escape from all the bad stuff in the world, and go back to looking for the good, I highly recommend this book and this author.

This was supposed to be a large print book, it is not. It might be a little bigger than the usual small print in novels but my 96 year old friend is unable to read it. Don't expect the usual large print if you buy this one.

If you find the whole genre of 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' type books to be annoyingly sappy and over-the-top then this book is your antidote.It features real stories from real life whereby the author (a Quaker pastor) draws real substantive wisdom. Where Chicken Soup and the like were "cute" or "charming", Gulley is challenging. There's plenty laugh out loud comedy here too, and enough sweetness to aggravate a toothache, but those elements are the icing instead of the cake.Gulley talks about raising children to be tough, the capacity people have for mid-life change, prayer, loss, flexibility, the home, the dignity of work, the debilitating effect of television, why we need more listening and less psychology, love between a husband & wife, and many other subjects. Nearly all of these short essays are punctuated with surprisingly relevant scriptural anecdotes from the Good Book.On the first page, Gulley wrote, "I thank God I was born before Nintendo video games and all the other things that keep kids from getting out and exploring their environs. My parents turned off the television set and sent me outdoors, where I met all kinds of interesting people, like Mrs. Harvey and Doctor Gibbs and Mr. Welty."And he isn't kidding. This is a superb read that--through the window of the author's life--manages to search out so much of what's wrong with the world, offers beautiful alternatives, and does it all with the charity, humor, modesty, and self-depreciation proper to a Christian.Highly recommended!

Front Porch Tales always invites me to sit a spell and absorb Philip Gulley's nostalgic, memorable stories that are more than stories. They remind me of what is essential, positive, and productive in our chaotic, techy world. Every story gives me pause to examine my life and prioritize/ appreciate what's of value.

Because in this cold and computerised world we live in, Philip Gulley is able to gently take us back, in very understandable language, to a different world, a different set of standards - a better world.Just sitting on his front porch with him and sharing his stories brought the odd lump to my throat and a great desire to relive my days in the times he wrote about, the times that gave me a taste of true contentment, happiness and innocence.He brought those times back to me.Although he's a Quaker, he doesn't rub it in, (do they ever)? But, he made me wish that I was good enough, sincere enough and pure enough in my faith to become a Quaker like him.Just get this book, take it to bed with you, read a few chapters and I guarantee you'll go to sleep with the biggest smile on your face you've had in a long time.This book is just beautiful ....

This was a Christmas gift for our 8 yr. old grandson who is into Yetis and such. He also likes Where's Waldo type books. This book has that but it was not what I was expecting. It is actually educational combined with fun. There are different geographical locations with information and things to do or learn throughout the book as well as the seek and find pages.

Purchased as a birthday gift for a grandparent. He introduced my son to Bigfoot and they both get a kick out of watching shows. The two of them had fun looking at this book together. It features search pages as well as informative pages about each of the cities Bigfoot is hiding in. Entertaining and educational. A cute gift for any Bigfoot fan.

This is more than a look and find book. It gives a little history and known facts about some of the biggest cities in the world and then has a find the big foot page. Love how the child can get some reading in and a little knowledge as well. I'm giving this as a gift and I can't wait to give it.

Pretty good seek and find. My only reason for giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's a bit weird to me that only half of the illustrations are colored in. It makes it look a bit unfinished and a little less challenging/fun.

The Bigfoot fan in this family really liked it. Some of the hidden items were easier to find but others were a challenge. Great stories/writing included to break up the puzzles.

Perfect for a Yeti fan who is 7 years old. He will enjoy the puzzle to find yeti, as well as learn about geographical locations.

Fun activities...challenging to find all the items. My granddaughters (ages 5 & 7) enjoyed briefly, then were bored.

I write this review on a Sunday when the New York Times has just published a long article quoting a claim by one of our sitting Supreme Court Justices that the Roberts court has “weaponized” free speech. If in fact the court is tilting against liberal petitioners for their free speech rights and in favor of conservatives, that is a deeply troubling development. The US has the most permissive speech rights of any country in the world, indeed in the history of the world, guaranteed by the First Amendment. These rights depend on the trust of citizens that enforcement of freedom of speech will be viewpoint neutral, and not a scrim for advancing a political position, whether on the right or the left.Just think. A sitting justice speaks out in the paper of record against the principle of free speech. This situation amounts to an emergency. We are at a point in our democracy where an increasing number of citizens seem ready to give up on the ideal “free speech,” because to them it looks like simply another piece on the chess board that the group-in-power can use to win the political game.These people need to read Nadine Strossen’s “Hate: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship.” This thorough and cogently written book reveals, in meticulous historical detail, the important resource that freedom of speech has offered to vulnerable groups—ethnic and racial minorities, war protesters, international human rights advocates—who have successfully through history advanced their cause under the protection of the viewpoint neutrality promised by the First Amendment.As Strossen’s balanced but passionate analysis demonstrates, if there is anything that can be “weaponized” (a word that I think is itself being “weaponized”), it is restraint of speech. The groups in power have consistently used “hate speech” regulations against the very people that such rules were intended to protect. This point has been well documented in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. But it is still relevant. Read in Strossen’s book about the unequal enforcement of the University of Michigan’s hate speech code against African Americans in the late 1980s (88-89) or about the experience of a black mother who posted racial epithets directed at her young sons on Facebook only to see her objection to “hate speech” taken down because its content could not be distinguished electronically from the real thing. Restraints on speech cannot themselves be restrained.A better response, as Strossen argues persuasively, is to do as she does: argue back. She provides the evidence that the psychological harms of even noxious speech are over-rated, especially when their targets are encouraged to resist speech with more speech. As she concludes, exercise your right “not to be silent” (182).The American tradition of free speech is, like all human institutions, imperfect. The only thing worse would be to lose it.

This book is incredible and important, perhaps more than ever. Not only does Strossen lay out the most common and powerful arguments in favor of having hate speech laws, but she also answers them in a way that is compelling, nuanced, and informed. At the end of the day, it serves as an excellent reminder of why we need the First Amendment and to continue to defend it

This beautifully written and thoughtful explanation of why “hate speech” laws harm freedom should be a must read for school administrators, lawmakers, and the President of the United States. It makes clear why laws against offensive ideas and actions, like burning or desecrating the flag of the U.S. are harmful in the long run. Unless the expression causes immediate physical harm, like yelling “fire” in a crowded theater when there is no fire, the speech should be protected as free expression, even if offensive to almost all thinking members of our society. We need to learn from Germany and France who have found that enforcing their “hate speech” laws leads to more, not less, hate.

This is a short, concise and terrifically well-researched book on the value of hate speech laws. The upshot – there’s little if any value and a good deal of adverse effects from such laws. The author is a current professor of Constitutional Law and a long term president of the ACLU. Before reading, I figured I was in for a left-wing polemic on various social justice topics of the day but I was wrong. The book’s arguments are given in a neutral voice with the author using fact after fact rather than unsubstantiated opinion. Sure, some of the examples of evil are from a left side view but the book’s conclusions are presented lacking any bias whatsoever.The book is presented with a good deal of legal opinions as well as many interesting anecdotes illustrating the point the author is making. A good deal of argument is dedicated to these laws being counter-productive. Rather than fulfilling their promise, they can blow back on the groups which are supposed to be protected by them. They’re misused. For example, Merkel used and continues to use anti-hate speech laws to suppress those who disagree with her politics. This has been the case many times in the past as well.In a rather extreme example, but one which should put a finale on passing such laws, the author illustrates how laws supposedly preventing Nazi speech led to the Nazis assuming power in Germany, 1933. This isn’t an isolated example of counter productivity either. The author’s found more.Still, the biggest issue with hate speech laws is hate speech defies definition – at least legally. Sure, we all know it when we hear it but trying to define when something is hateful in a law doesn’t seem possible. Time and time again such laws, due to their vagueness, hurt those supposedly helped or rope in true innocents who find themselves victims of unintended consequences. If they ever work, they only do so after long drawn out trials where the publicity gains the hate speaker more attention than he could have gotten on his own.In a very interesting chapter and for a bit more as the book went on, the author examines the adverse effect of hate speech. Is it like violent video games where most think they foment violence in children but none have demonstrated it? Most telling along this line, the author delves into if it’s better to be shielded from discomforting ideas or exposed to them. Finally, the author offers a few ideas on how, aside from laws, hate speech can be countered.I found the book fascinating as it taught me a good deal. To say I’ve changed a few opinions is to put it mildly. The book may be aimed at those in power who can pass or repeal such laws, but I think anybody with even a passing interest in this topic will enjoy as much as I did. I most heartily wish it be made mandatory reading for every college official on today’s campuses where dress codes are passé but speech codes run rampant.

Barb, I have bought and read a lot of beginner books. Yours is by far the best written and the projects are really something that someone would want do. I can't wait to read and easily understand each pattern. I'm so excited to get started, thank you for this book, Nettie.

As someone just starting out, I found this book to be easy enough to understand but challenging enough to keep my interest without scaring me off. Wish there were more projects but this is a beginner book so I guess this is just right.

I liked this book a lot and will be using the. Basic patterns to work from. Nice to be able to go into my stash and make scarves and hats in different sizes and colors. The other patterns are nice quick carry along projects too.

Great book for those who are starting crochet as a hobby or don't have alot of spare time for one.or maybe you need a quick bunch of cool gifts .This books instructions are easy to follow.if you have little ones you will really like the minion hats in a choice of good and evil lol.whatever you choose to create I wish you Happy Crocheting! An excellent field guide, but the "of Florida" tag is very misleading. It is actually a general guide to birds of North America, superficially edited to imply that it was produced specifically for Florida. All of the range maps show the entire North American continent, rather than focusing on ranges within the state of Florida. The species notes are also very general for North America, providing no insights into status of populations in Florida. It appears that very little consideration of Florida was given to selection of the species included in the guide. Western species are indeed mentioned in a separate section, but Eastern species from the subtropics to the subarctic are all included as if they were Florida birds. If you are looking for detailed bird information specifically for the state of Florida, this is not the bird guide for you.

The content of this book is great. The book itself is a mess. There is a page with a hole in it and several pages with blurry printing. It was printed in China. Such a shame to ruin such a good book with careless workmanship.

Great beginners guide to identifying birds, like the layout of the book shows details of the birds in Florida. Highly recommend this book! I went to my local library and viewed the different books on birds before buying the ones that fit my needs. I have several guide books, and learn something different in each one.

Although this is a very well organized book with great illustrations, it is not an all-inclusive bird guide to Florida birds. I have an inland waterway (freshwater) in my backyard and purchased the book to assist me in identifying the numerous species of birds which transit, nest, and roost in and along it. I nearly immediately, upon receipt of the book, attempted to identify several species. The book did not contain two (2) species I observed despite my relentless and thorough review of the book. I was somewhat disappointed based on the tile of the book. I will have to purchase another book which (hopefully!) contains ALL the species.

Got this for my grandson he is very much into the study of birds, this book was very informative and great for learning about the habits of different birds and where their from.

Photos are a little small, but okay. The book is full of information and specifics on most breeds here. A good buy. We are using it to identify the birds like the Pileated Woodpeckers, Harriers, and Ruby Throated Hummingbirds. Great fun for us older, seasoned citizens - the young too.

Comprehensive - I chose this one over many others due t a small difference - at the bottom of each page, there is a place to add the date you saw the bird that is listed on that page, I think that is a COOL feature!

Sort of hard to find a bird in the book. Lots of nice pictures and info...but I’m not finding it easy to identify a bird.
