I started collecting Fox prints and wanted a book to show me all that he painted. This is pretty good but the pictures aren't in color and that was a big disappointment.

You need to know that there are NO color pictures in this guide. This book has small b&w photos of what must be nearly all of R.A. Fox's prints with a price guide. It's great to know all the names of the pictures that I have, and the one's that I've seen that I would like to have. However, this book is better for someone with better eyes than I have. For me, the b&w photos are too small to distinguish much of the detail.

I just returned from a 3-week safari in Africa where we visited 6 different national parks and conservancies, one of which, Amboseli National Park in Kenya, is known as an elephant sanctuary. We saw many elephants in every park, herds of up to 30 animals, and really enjoyed watching these giant beasts move gracefully across the land, munching everything in their paths.This collection of essays from experts in the field of elephant behavior and conservation addresses many aspects of the problems that have beset this species in a thoughtful and very academic way. I’ve been reading one essay a day and, though there is some duplication in what the authors are writing, each essay brings a different perspective to the issues. Some of the articles are quite academic, and there are some sections that I just skim through; however the in-depth treatment of this very complex topic is well worth the investment of time to read these articles. It’s easy to think that poaching is the main threat to elephants, but the human animal conflict caused by loss of habitat is equally dangerous. Addressing that problem thoughtfully will remain a challenge as long as both species continue to exist.The copy of the book I’m reading is an uncorrected black and white proof, but the many pictures are still quite beautiful. I’m sure they are stunning in full color! Whether you’re a conservationist or just a lover of this important species, there is much information and knowledge to be gained from this book.

I hesitated getting this book, because reading about bad things happening to elephants often makes me cry. I don't know why their deaths seem more devastating to me than the deaths of other wild animals. There is definitely death and much sadness in this book, from poaching to translocated orphaned baby elephants saved from culls. Yet there are also fascinating stories of elephant studies and individual elephants. Plus, stories of those who work to keep African elephants from becoming extinct, including the rangers who deal with the poachers. This book is loaded with all sorts of diverse information, as well as close-up and aerial pictures of elephant herds. The pictures in the ARC were black and white, but they will be in color in the final copy. It's a big, heavy book about a big, heavy animal that cannot be allowed to be annihilated by greed and stupidity.

This is a book with many authors -- activists, conservationists, photographers, zoologists, guides, scientists, even a criminologist.The first chapters focus on various aspects of conservation, starting with a fascinating census project, while the second half of the book looks at individual countries: South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, Gabon, the Congo, the Central African Republic, Togo, Nigeria, Chad and Mali.The photos are fantastic, especially in the first chapters. The writing is sometimes factual and scientific, but just as often it's subjective and emotional.The book concludes with ways to get involved with conservation efforts, a guide to elephant behaviors, a good bibliography, and b&w images of postal stamps that feature elephants.

This book would appear to be the consummate consumer level publication on the present state of elephants on the African continent. Beautiful photographic illustrations. Heart warming individual studies and stories as well as (often too many) numbers and statistics. My heart breaks for these beautiful and possibly most majestic of God's creatures, indeed under threat of extinction just for monetary profit.As always, I resent the preachiness that I am part of the problem because I'm a human being. Not true. But there's not too much of that in this book and I was, of course, expecting it.Very, very comprehensive. The reader may give into the urge to browse this substantial work. Go ahead. Or read it all. Disturbing, informative, and will likely bring a tear to the eye.

I would love to give this book 5 stars as the subject is so worthy of it. Unfortunately many of the essayists get bogged down in stats and numbers. For those who support conservation but find it difficult to read pages of stats or even extrapolate what they mean, it makes this book difficult to get through. Not all the essays are written this way. It is a book worth reading but the reader has to pick the essays s/he wants to read.My advanced copy only had black and white photos. I do not know if the published book will have color photos. Those are needed to make the book appeal to more readers. those photos connect us more to the subject. We see the beauty in these magnificent creatures not just the starkness of their plight.

I love elephants, so human like...truly the gentle giants of the earth...the books is just full of such interesting facts...and, sadly, the reality is, poachers have no mercy on these gentle giants...so hurtful and disturbing to see some of the pix of tusks, etc, but this is the reality of our world, and it has compelled me to do my part....I got an advance copy, B&W, so pix are OK, but I think the final release will have pix that are much better, making it a good coffee table book for the animal lover...

You will take much from this book. If it is from the elephants angle, or from the rangers and what they do, or simply awareness. A sad book. And it does hurt to know that some people simply do not care about living things. You will leanr a lot in this book, as I did - very interesting facts present. The book is slightly on the heavier side. I wished it came with HD colors, it was instead black and white; I did receive an advanced copy.

I've read all of these books by author T.K. Chapin. From bodyguards to reporters and missionaries, the people in these book won't disappoint. Well developed, they face many of the same things we do. Chapin certainly doesn't steer away from difficult topics. But always there are the threads of forgiveness and redemption. You will be encouraged to let God lead, knowing that He works for our good. I highly recommend this series!I received a complimentary copy of these books but was not required to leave a review.

All three books are wonderful! I love the characters and the story line in all three. The characters all have real problems and with God's help, they come through them. I love the suspense and the romance in these books. The books are well written and hold your attention to the very last page. I look forward to reading more books by T.K. Chapin.

This series by TK Chapin is typical of his amazing Christian fiction that has a storyline that can touch all of our lives in some way. Some may have experienced these situations or know someone that has. These stories are lessons of overcoming life's trials and tribulations through faith in God’s love.

If you are looking for contemporary relationship reading, T.K. Chapin books can't be beat. Christian world view, well written, and just plain good!! You may be surprised to find a situation in these books that will speak to you in an amazing way. Altogether totally excellent.

It was an ok read, conveniently parsed out in bite-sized chunks that make it easy to read for ten minutes or two hours. Lots of interesting trivia.But... There needs to be some fact-checking as well as some proofreading of the book. Consistent in mistaking an uppercase I for the number one seemed popular. Also the author tended to inject a lot of personal opinions, as we see in the note for Clara Blandick (Auntie Em from The Wizard of Oz). Clara committed suicide after being wracked with pain and a steadily declining health outlook as well as progressive blindness, prompting the author to write, "What a pathetic end for the sturdy, no-nonsense Auntie Em." I took exception to that statement and it caused me to read the rest of the book with a slightly less enthusiastic demeanor. I don't feel that this is the kind of book that is served by editorializing in this manner.I was pleased to see that the book contains a very comprehensive necrology of, at the very least, many hundreds - perhaps thousands -- of Hollywood notables. There is also a lengthy list of burials by site of Tinseltown's departed, a surely welcome resource for fans who plan vacations around cemeteries and death ephemera.To be sure, I would have given this at least one more star but for the distraction of unproofread copy and unnecessary editorializing.

Well, I'll admit it. I must be one doozy of a morbid person, because I enjoyed the heck out of this book! So much so, that the other 2 book's that I was reading were placed aside, just so I could finish this. I'm 53, and I've heard of, and watched about 90% of the people in this book, but I hadn't much of an idea how or when they had died. Boy, stars sure do get married a lot! One thing bothered me, and that was the section that Jon-Erik Hexum was filed under. Suicide. While he did kill himself with a gun loaded with blanks, he didn't know the repercussions of what a blank bullet can really do. I felt it should have been filed under accidents. Aside from a few snide remarks from the author, especially about Claras death "Auntie Em," I would recommend this book. It was a fascinating read.

Based on the books title, I was half-expecting some sensationalist schlock, but took a chance based on how many celebrities were covered. I'm so glad I did! The book doesn't just cover the most famous deaths like Marilyn Monroe and Natalie Wood, but it also covers lesser known stars like the actor who played Buckwheat, and the actress who played Auntie Em in "The Wizard of Oz". All of the stories were interesting, and pretty in-depth. Some of the more famous actors were presented differently than I've read in other books about their deaths, but it's not that surprising given how many theories there are about these super-celebrities. James Dean's death stuck out to me especially, given that I've read elsewhere that Dean wasn't actually speeding at the time of his death. And, of course, no two people will ever agree on how Marilyn Monroe died.The only real issue I had with the book was the way the author classified several deaths as "suicides", when they might not have actually been suicides. One actor (I don't remember his name), apparently held a gun to his head and pulled the trigger while joking around, thinking it wasn't loaded, which hardly counts as being a known suicide. To give the author credit, he does present these in an unbiased, neutral way, settling on just presenting the details and letting the reader come to their own conclusions, but many of the so-called "suicides" in that section didn't seem to me to belong there.It was still a fascinating read, and I learned a ton about actors whose deaths I had heard of, but knew little about. For example, I knew that Chris Farley had died of a drug overdose, but I never knew the almost unbelievable story of his last few days. The story of Freddie Prinze was also interesting. I loved that it covered a wide variety of celebrities, from a variety of time-periods, rather than focusing on the most famous and the most recent. It focused quite a bit on Old Hollywood, which is what I'm most interested, so that was perfect. The author sticks mostly to the facts, and avoids trying to glamorize, or even villify, the many, many, celebrities covered in the book. Definitely worth a re-read!

James Parish wrote a substantial reference book on entertainers deaths. Including the well known to the very obscure and grouping in categories such as natural causes, suicides, homicides,and the unexplained, it was entertaining, sad, touching, some humor, but respectful. I revisited some familiar deaths and learned a lot from the many myths circulating. I very much enjoyed hearing of the life's and deaths of many I barely heard of, if at all. There were some discrepancies adding to the myths. But overall I was impressed by the detail. The book culminates with a long necrology featuring all included in this book along with many others. A handy guide when you wonder whatever happened to, or how old were they when they died to satisfy your curiosity or you family and friends. Of course this book as large as it is covers a fraction of celebrity deaths. I certainly hope James Parish continues with further volumes.

James Parish has a handy guide to Hollywood deaths. And, as you start to read, it's almost like popcorn: eat one bite and you can't stop. Why the appeal of these death stories? Are we curious? Are we awed? Are we looking for a taste of our own deaths?I'm not sure, but we all must go into that black night, and to see the famous dissolve into nothingness is strangely gratifying. We all disappear, no matter how much fame we have. And this quality of life, our own deaths, fascinates. Not one of these mighty people have returned from the dead. Not one. And, to our horror, none of us will return either.If you haven't accepted your mortality, this might be the book for you.
