Like: Everything about the Bermuda mystery.Dislike: Too short.Five stars because it was a very interesting book I have never read.I recommend it to everyone who likes to know a little more about mystery issues.

This was a fairly quick read for my 9 year old but she found its little scary. She no longer wants to fly anywhere that has to pass through the triangle. There were also other mysteries discussed in the book that freaked her out a bit, like the lock nest monster.

The best book on venture capital yet written. After you get past Mr. Romans chest-pounding exercises (the first couple of chapters are egregious, but he recovers quickly) this book is more thorough, covers more topics, and is more specifically useful than any other. The guest chapters are also excellent.Jeff Bussgang's book is better as "what do VCs really do / day in the life" and Tom Perkins & Tim Draper's books are interesting stories & histories but Mr. Romans book is the most practical book on VC for startups yet written. If you have to pick just one, this is it.(PS - I am a Silicon Valley VC and was a startup CEO for 12 years before that.)

I have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours explaining the VC/PE ecosystem covered in this book to wood-be entrepreneurs. Although there are business degrees with emphasis in entrepreneurship, many don't touch on the realities of the venture game. It is a game of timing, technology, team, and luck. This book covers every aspect of the startup in a way that isn't clinical or trite from some brief history of the VC world and then driving through the stages of a startup from formation to exit. With bing or google at your side to drill deeper on any topics that interest you and this book, you are well armed to venture into the startup game.The venture capital and private equity world are made up (in most part) of very smart people with a passion to build companies and create something from nothing. As an X-rocket scientist I understand that passion to build something. Whether you are a student, executive or entrepreneur, you need to understand what is happening in your market today, what are VCs backing, where are the trends. You must be the expert in the niche you are trying to address and be able to tell a compelling story. The VCs do have a firm belief in exactly what is in the crystal ball, they may not be always right, but they have a belief and you need to know what this is. This book gives you all the background you need to be successful in telling that story. It is not a template but provides guidance and lessons learned from real world experiences. Knowing Andrew for several years, he brings a colorful, concise and story-telling style to the history, methods and process for working in the VC/PE world. This book with a few blogs and other resources will provide a solid foundation for any entrepreneur.

While there are some tidbits of useful information, this book is mostly a jumbled mess with no structure or organization. It reads like a book made out of cut and pasted blog paragraphs with random, tenuously related example "stories" from the author's network. There are also enough instances of opinion presented as fact to call into question the book as a whole. For a broad but detailed understanding of venture capital, I'd recommend reading "Venture Deals - Be Smarter than your Lawyer and Venture Capitalist" twice before reading this book once.

Excellent read for Founders seeking VC funding. I first learned about Andrew by hearing him as a keynote speaker at a Rockies Venture Club conference. Great guy - full of fascinating stories and advice. I highly recommend Andrew and this book.

Andrew Romans is one of the rising stars of the VC scene in the Bay Area. He brings together the best VCs and founders to create a community which will yield the best startups of tomorrow. He thinks systematically about the whole ecosystem, from founders' vision to finance to legal aspects to people capital. His Founders Club and Georgetown Angels groups are examples of the venues where great things happen and the total becomes much larger -- sometimes exponentially larger -- than the sum of the parts. As a founder, I find Andrew's book immensely valuable. If you have an idea but also can implement it, armed with Andrew's book and nothing else, you can begin to discover your company outlines. It is pretty scant on details regarding the pathology, or even the specific molecular markers and targets of the many diseases. It is also disappointing that the work of several luminaries is dismissed without much discussion of what they actually proposed. For example, the lack of discussion of Jerne, who won the Nobel Prize for his work, which was highly respected at the time but now is thought not really relevant to the understanding of Immunology. Amusingly, the authors refer to the work of Gadjusek in complement fixation, then dismissively state he went on to propose some vague genetic explanation for Kuru, a disease in a native tribe in New Guinea. Whether one respects what he found or not, it did win the Nobel Prize, and it was not a vague genetic disease, but appeared to be a slow virus that was transmitted through cannibalism. The final section of the book is a waste of time. It attempts to inject philosophy into the self- not-self question. This was pure sophistry. Finally, the book proper is actually less than half the total pages, which include a very extensive bibliography and index. The bibliography stands alone, as the cited works are not referenced in the text. Most curious.

A must read for anyone interested in the history of immunology - beautifully written

In his latest book Anderson (along with McKay) again brilliantly straddles the chasm that often exists between science and the public understanding of it. By making disease both deeply personal and yet retaining a narrative that is both scientifically literate and philosophically stimulating he again pulls of a remarkable feat-a book that thoroughly satisfies the expert and lay person. I loved his book on kuru for the same reasons. A must read for a wide range of intelligent minds.

This book makes a uniquely wonderful, learned and readily readable contribution to the medical, scientific, historical, social and literary underpinnings of autoimmunity and its discontents, and will keep the reader's attention and improve his or her knowledge throughout. I highly commend it to both the specialist and general reader.

nice read. Interesting topic

I was looking forward to reading this book because I like immunology. I was very disappointed. The language is stilted and there is too much philosophy and not enough immunology. There is very little information about the scientists as people. While the book started slowly, I was hoping that it would improve or that I would get more used to the authors' style as I progressed through the book. Alas this didn't happen and I stopped reading the book about halfway through. I cannot recommend this book.

About the Author

Masahiro Hikokubo is a writer with extensive experience on the Yu-Gi-Oh! animation series. He worked on the original Yu-Gi-Oh! animation as a duel designer and went on to write scripts for Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light, and now Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s. He has also worked on the Naruto animation, creating ninjutsu techniques. Hikokubo is a fan of Fist of the North Star and Yasuo Otagaki’s Moonlight Mile. Masashi Sato debuted as a mangaka in Akamaru Jump in the summer of 2004 with the short story Mikakushi Tsumuji. He was also a semi-finalist in the 64th Tezuka Award for his work Guhou Daichi. After working as an assistant to the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga creative team, Masahi Sato is now the lead artist on Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s. The book itself is good, the only thing to watch out for it the card that comes with it. Mine came with no protection unlike the others that I have purchased in bookstores. The back of the card became damaged when I got it out of the book's binding no matter how careful I was in removing it.

The kindlebook Story Genius: How to Use Brain Science to Go Beyond Outlining and Write a Riveting Novel (Before You Waste Three Years Writing 327 Pages That Go Nowhere) by Lisa Cron caught my attention in response to a subconscious intent that I have to attract key information to improve my writing (especially with my awareness that even getting published is competitive for authors from much more professionally prestigious backgrounds than myself). Some of the writing mentoring ideas discussed; thinking of writing from the What If perspective, the tricky whose life you will turn upside down, disclosure on the worldview of a protagonist and more.

This book stands apart from every other book about story I've ever read. And I've read quite a few.For someone who's primarily "interested" in the art and/or science of story, this book is bound to disappoint.But, for someone who's *engaged* in the hobby or profession of crafting stories that need to *work*, "Story Genius" is a godsend.Here's why:Lisa Cron has nailed down, in deceptively simple language, the very exact steps a writer needs to take to go from interesting prose to a compelling story. While the book is highly readable and doesn't have lots of (any, in my reading) frightening and impressive words, I see the fingerprints of other geniuses on the page: Rupert Sheldrake, Nick Arrizza, Anders Ericcson, and even (and in this context, it's a high compliment), L. Ron Hubbard.Just fingerprints, though. The vast majority of the work here is all Cron's. She is so lighthearted and playful, you could easily miss the profound value (to the working storyteller) in her book IF YOU WEREN'T ALREADY STARVING FOR IT.Which I am. Because with all the wonderful books I've read and courses I've taken, a few things have been missing.Like: After you've identified the "wound" in the protagonist's past that informs the inner part of their journey through the story, what in the world do you do with that information? Most other writers, teachers, and gurus implicitly leave you with the challenge, "Well, that's for you to figure out."Translation: They don't know, and they don't want you to know that they don't know.Cron does, and she lays it out explicitly and generously. On the point of the protagonist's "wound" alone, this book is a complete though concise master class.Another thing I've found missing almost everywhere else: How much of your character's past do you need to tell your reader about -- and how do you determine what that how much is?I've only seen a partial answer to that question one place else -- in Aaron Sorkin's MasterClass on screenwriting -- and while he gave essentially the same answer, I find Cron's coverage of this topic in this book, much more useful and comprehensive."Story Genius" might not be the best book for a beginner for one simple and ironic reason:Until you've been burned over and over again by the overconfident gurus of this field (and I don't include Sorkin here -- he's great, but again, not as comprehensive on certain key points), you won't be able to appreciate the finesse and extraordinary practical value of what's in this book.I know if I had read it, say, 30 years ago, I would have shrugged a lot of this stuff off. Might have called it "repetitive" or "incomplete."These days, I struggle with the real problems that Cron addresses in this book -- both as a working writer myself, and as a coach to other writers.In that way, I am like an experienced jeweler walking through a flea market of cubic zirconium. I have to make stuff work, rather than read or hear it five times just to understand what it is.So, I recognize a gem when I see it.If any of this resonates, you should get this book to ease your own suffering and increase your own productivity -- and satisfaction with the experience -- sooner, rather than later.

Yes, the actual 'science' is thinly presented, but this book gets five stars for providing what few others do--a clear, specific explanation of what constitutes a compelling story and specific steps to develop and integrate those elements.The claims ala science distil to:- The human brain evolved a capacity to simulate various risk and opportunity scenarios, allowing us to step into them in our imaginations. Stories allow us to sharpen our insights and skills in areas threatening areas, including social navigation. We get to try out various strategies and tactics without incurring the real-world risks.- This capacity evolved because it improved survival (those who did it better survived to pass along their genes).- Saying we're "wired for story" means our attention favors inputs that fit the pattern of a story. We may momentarily pay attention to a movement or sound (or a string of them in a James Bond film), but we are riveted by a story. Cron's definition of a story is "someone grapples with a problem they can't avoid" and changes in the process. (p. 30)- In the presence of such a story, the protagonist becomes our 'avatar' and 'portal.' A story that contains the required elements activates brain systems that evolved to enable us to simulate the other's interior experience. Our minds are compelled to 'try on' the role and to experience the situation.Cron's definition of story may seem narrow, but it's one that's relevant to this irresistible-mental-simulation thesis. She introduces the metaphor of the 'third rail' that provides electricity to power a train's engine. Without that rail, a train is just an immobile collection of hardware. In a story, the third rail is the protagonist's 'worldview' and particularly an unresolved inner issue (usually reflected in some self-complicating misbelief). A disruptive event or situation forces the protagonist to struggle with an unavoidable, "escalating problem"--the 'difficult goal.' Throughout the story (a novel, in this case), the protagonist reflects on what has happened and is happening, evaluating what it means and what she should do next. She's looking at it through the misperception(s) that arise from her unresolved inner issue. Her reactions trigger more complications and conflict. Over the course of grappling with the escalating problem and (if she's not to be a tragic failure) frequently examining her past experiences and beliefs, her worldview changes. She learns. She changes.Cron guides the writer through the prework required to develop the protagonist and other contextual elements an organic (non-superficial) plot can spring from.One of Cron's most helpful topics regards how to tell where to start telling your (protagonist's) story.The scene card is a very useful tool for directly applying Cron's insights on story effectiveness. I added it's components to the Document Notes panel in my scene template in Scrivener 2 for Mac [Download]. She also has some specific suggestions for Scrivener users.Another reviewer speculated that a raw beginner may not be prepared to recognize how helpful Cron's principles and process are. Perhaps one must fumble through an assortment of misdirected writing programs or become sick of the aimless, endless wandering of pantsing before gaining the required perspective. If it is possible to shortcut the millions of bad words one must write before consistent good writing comes within reach, this is one clearly lit path.

Life changing information if you are ready for it. Was life changing for me--changed several core beliefs of mine as it sank in over a few years.

I've been recommending his books to everyone. If you have wonder what happens after we die, the actual accounts of his clients will tell you all. I'm more at spiritual peace since I read both books. We all come with a plan... not everything is black or white, for the most part is grey...Terrible circumstances we encounter or do might be because we had previously agreed to do them, we are helping someone (another soul) or we might have just decided to do them just because (free will). We have all been told that we come here to be happy, but not true, we come here to experience things we cannot experience in heaven. So yeah, some people have "chosen" to suffer and not get out of the hole cos that's what they came here to experience. The important thing is to learn the lesson quickly, move on and be happy until our next assignment :)...and there's no hell nor the Devil, only the one you create for yourself with your mind, when you disconnect from God/Source/the Creator.one last note, this book mentions a little more in detail about ghosts, spirits, "evil" spirits, "possessions" and other entities (not E.T.); very interesting indeed.

Both Michael Newtons books Journey of Souls & Destiny of Souls has literally changed my whole world. I 'accidentally' stumbled upon destiny of souls (which I read 1st, not knowing that journey of souls was his first one) one night meaning to google some phrase I heard on the Long Island Medium. I ended up clicking on this book for some reason, and was instantly so incredibly intrigued. This book in particular really stood out to me, after have reading this & journey of souls I can honestly say that i refer to these books in my mind once a day. I was raised Christian, but as I've gotten a little older I've always wondered- how can there be all these religions & they each have there own specific individual "rules" so to speak yet they all claim that their religion is the path to god, and THAT one religion is going to get them into heaven. I just couldn't picture dying, waiting in line to see if you were allowed access past those pearly gates and then god announces real quick "ALRIGHT GUYS, WE'RE ABOUT TO START ADMISSIONS INTO HEAVEN.. BUT GUESS WHOS THE LUCKY WINNER?? CATHOLICS! The rest y'all exit to your right, and Satan will take ya on down" so I've always kind of had this thought process that each religion has a way of coming full circle, and that being-- having faith in whoever, or whatever allows you to feel a certain way. Maybe its love, comfort, guidance, or gives you hope.. but my point is, this book did indeed make me feel validated on my thought process and the way I see/ view my god. Love this book, and will forever hold on & re read.

I've always believed in God, although my opinion on what God is has evolved over the years. I grew up thinking that He was an old man with a white beard. As I grew older this just didn't make sense to me and I have been on a quest for The Truth for the past 10+ years. While this book isn't about what God is, it definitely goes a long ways to explaining what God isn't, and it definitely proves that there is a God or at the very least an after life. I absolutely love this book. Before finishing it I had to go on line and find somebody who knows Dr. Newtons teachings so I could go through the process myself. I'm not so interested in who I was in my past lives, although that will be fascinating to find out. I'm more interested in what Dr. Newton describes as the life between life. Basically he gives great detail as to what exactly happens to our soul when we lose our physical body. The book gives great detail as to why we are here and how we chose to incarnate over and over again to learn lessons. This book has given me a new peace of mind regarding why things happen to us that seem unfair. I definitely look at life a lot differently now that I have read this book. The book has helped me to not take anything personal. Everything in life is for my own good and I have chose for these things to happen so that I can learn from them.

Lots and lots of information and case studies about what to expect on the Other Side and why. It's written well, although I had to take breathers. He's always presenting new information, but it can seem a little repetitive since it's all about love and learning on the Other Side.I'm thrilled to know there is an Other Side, but sometimes it sure sounds like everyone there is on drugs the way they're thrilled and joyful to be working most of the time, going to school, attending lectures on the importance of compassion, etc., passing the Cup of Sorrows, playing games like Tag. From all the near death books I've read, I understand the joy and peace and love there is indescribable. I guess any author trying to describe the details of life on the Other Side for hundreds of pages is going to risk rendering it almost too ordinary rather than extraordinary. Sometimes it sounds complex and filled with hierarchies that aren't really hierarchies because no one minds being at the levels they are at, even if they are lower down, because they're so darn happy. Who cares if you're feeling groovy!But I love that he's written this book. I love the regressions and the values shown to be important. I love the lessons people learn from their reincarnations. And I love that Earth is considered a very difficult and strenuous school, and the souls that choose to incarnate here return to the Other Side more insightful and strong as a result. Go earthlings!!!
