Violence, death and disaster mark this excellent book, in the tradition of Robert Louis Stevenson. This is robust reading for kids with a taste for adventure.I bought several books in this series in an effort to get my 12 year-old stepdaughter to start reading again, after she seemed to lose interest in books. The iPad, television and digital media in general had monopolized her attention, and her constant complaint was that books were "boring." The series was a great success with her, and she has read them all with great enjoyment.There is a lot of graphic violence in this particular book, but that seems to help break through kids' resistance to reading. High drama is often what young readers need to keep them turning the pages. Recommended.

This is the third book in the Roman Mysteries series of books. Again I downloaded this book for my thirteen-year-old to read. She had originally read the book in French when she was twelve. She really enjoyed the book and feels that the content is age appropriate. She recommends this book to anyone interested in the time period and this type of writing.

Picking right up from where The Secrets of Vesuvius ended, this story finds Flavia, Nubia, Lupus and Jonathan stationed in a refugee camp on the outskirts of Pompeii. After the eruption of the volcano, our four young protagonists managed to escape the rain of ash and rivers of lava along with the rest of their families, but are still far from safe. Jonathan has slipped into a coma, and whilst the girls scour the coast for herbs that may revive him, Lupus grows conscious of another danger lurking nearby.Several children are disappearing from the refugee camp, and it's apparent that pirates are making the most of the chaos in order to kidnap freeborn children and sell them into slavery. The amateur sleuths investigate matters, and a variety of clues leads them to suspect the wealthy, charismatic Publus Pollius Felix as the mastermind behind the kidnappings. Using all their cunning, they manage to infiltrate his beautiful villa of Limona on the coast of Surrentum (modern day Sorrento) as his guests.Each character has their own mini-plot as they explore and investigate the villa. Flavia goes head-to-head with Felix's spoilt daughter Pulchra over the treatment of her slaves, whilst Jonathan teams up with her in order to spy on her father. Lupus overhears some strange conversations held between men in the bay, and Nubia finds runaway slaves and must come to a decision on whether or not to join them. It's only a matter of time before the children come up against the slave-traders - terrifying men who wear grotesque comedy-masks - and from there the investigation turns into a rescue mission as they struggle to free the children, alert the authorities and save themselves from slavery."The Roman Mysteries" is one of those rare series when each progressive book is on par - if not superior - to the one before. At turns insightful, suspenseful, exciting, humorous, and tear-jerking, "The Pirates of Pompeii" takes our characters and puts them on another adventure that challenges and changes them, whilst at the same time letting us learn more about them. We get more insight into Nubia and Lupus's pasts (though you can tell that Lawrence is saving more for later), as well as a few tidbits concerning the mystery of Jonathan's mother. Flavia is the most straightforward of all the children, but it's always fun to watch her to form crushes, organise the others, and get outraged whenever she witnesses an injustice.As always, the research Lawrence puts into the stories is fascinating without being too invasive. Here she delicately examines the reality of slavery in Ancient Rome, without condemning nor praising it. Rather, the values dissonance of the time is presented as matter of fact to the reader: naturally the protagonists find the selling of freeborn children as horrific, as is beating a helpless slave - but slavery itself gets no dismissive commentary. It is simply a way of life for these people, and they're not going to question it. The inequality between high-born Flavia and her slave Nubia is also addressed; resulting in a rather poignant picture of friendship that is treasured by both participants, but clearly not one of equals.Containing maps, a glossary and an afterword that explains some of the book's content, (Villa Limona was actually based on a real place that is believed to have been owned by a man called Felix Pollius) the story combines world-building, strong characterization, an interesting plot, and lovely clear prose into one excellent whole.As always, Lawrence manages to pack in a huge amount of story into a comparatively short novel, without anything ever feeling messy or convoluted. Little things like Nubia's flute and Jonathan's sleeping powder are mentioned early on and are returned to the narrative in rewarding ways, and characterization is always spot-on - such as Jonathan's sense of humor being utilized in a very heartrending way in order to calm the enslaved children. All the plot-threads are woven together neatly, with the most important ones tied up at the end, and several always left dangling in order to take us into the next book: The Assassins of Rome.

The Pirates of Pompeii follows immediately after the events in The Secret's of Vesuvius, and is the third in Lawrence's Roman Mysteries Series. Here we rejoin Flavia, Nubia, Jonathan, and Lupus as they find themselves in a refugee camp near Surrentum. As with the previous books, this volume is set in the first century, 79 A.D. As we start out here, the group (along with Uncle Gaius, Aristo, Miriam, Mordecai and the dogs) are working hard to help the survirors with Mrodecai offering his services free of charge and running a surgery out of a bath house near the harbor of Stabia. Not long after arriving there, the foursome discovers a frightened young girl hiding in a cave on the mountain and learns that children are disappearing from the refugee camp...and we all know this is a mystery that Falvia and her friends cannot turn their back on. They begin immediately trying to solve it, a task which takes them to Villa Limona the home of Publus Pollius Felix. Their mystery leads them to search for a man known as "The Patron" and they have encounters with run away slaves, pirates, and the Emperor himself all in the course of solving this mystery!As with the previous book, this is an excellent glimpse into the daily life of the Roman people and deals with wide ranging issues from disaster relief, the treatment (abuse of slaves is a big topic in this book) of slaves, the division of the class system, and the fall of Jerusalem (ten years prior). The children must deal with all manner of human failings from pirates who want to sell them as salves, to spoiled bratty rich children, to the issue of profiteering from the disaster at Pompeii. All in all, it manages to address a lot of series issues, give a solid look at life in the given time period, and still be entertaining and fun to read! The Pirates of Pompeii the focus is almost exclusively on the four children with the adults playing only a brief role at the beginning and end. The only adult to have a significant part here is Pollius, who I would label as a "guest star" in this volume.Overall, this was a highly enjoyable mystery/thriller/adventure book for young readers that is heavy on the details of Roman daily life and is highly descriptive with likable and believable characters (for the most part). Previously, what I felt that there was a bit of a heavy handed Christian message to the series, however it's much more subtle in this book and is more welcome...woven into the story with more skill. I also liked that the inequality between Falvia (freeborn) and Nubia (her slave) is addressed more directly here (as with Lupus also). I give it four stars, The Pirates of Pompeii strength is in details and overall, it is a light and entertaining read.

Wonderful, wonderful book. Ideal coffee table book for my home; visitors sit there entranced looking at photographs of people from small/rare cultures that are on the verge of disappearing thanks to the encroachment of modern technology and modern life. This book documents these cultures, perhaps in something of a flashy, artificial way, but in an important way nevertheless. Just as photos of the Civil War or the early American West may have been posed or somehow created, yet they helped people to understand and define what was going on. I believe this book does the same thing. In a few years, these cultures will be gone or dying. These images may be all that's left for the non-scholar/non-researcher to find.The photos in the book are just plain beautiful. Each tells its own story, without words, but with the visual connection the reader has to the photograph and the subject of the photo, along with the physical and social environment of each culture as depicted in the images.Yes, the book is pricey. The question is whether it's worth the money. The answer for me (and hopefully for you) is Yes.

The photos are amazing but would have been even more stunning if it were on a glossier paper. I've seen a collection of these photos in the African Museum in Berg en Dal and know they can be much sharper and even more impressive.A couple of the pages in the book I received had been damaged in its making and were stuck together and had to be cut apart, a shame for such a lovely and fairly expensive book.

This isn't just a great book. It's a deeply important book that feels more like you have a world-class museum in your hands. The pictures, of course, are astounding, but there's something about seeing all of these remote peoples that really impacts you as you look.The book is organized by "tribe", basically: There are a few dozen sections each devoted to one group of people living in Africa, Tibet, Siberia, Bornea, South America etc...At the beginning of each section there's a page-long intro to that people, with sections on their history, beliefs, and how they live day-to-day. And then the images come and you see faces that are identical in some cases to faces that existed many thousands of years ago. But they, and their cultures, are still around today.The world is changing so quickly that it is astonishing to see all of these different ancient people in one place. And it is all the more amazing when you realize that these are indeed PEOPLE: Humans, who live lives that are almost unimaginable to those of us in post-industrial societies.Again, this isn't just a great book. It's a vitally important work that will haunt and delight you. If you were considering buying a copy, don't: Just buy it. You won't regret it, not for an instant. It's amazing. (And BIG.)

Magnificent book for travellers looking for new places and people to discover. The book itself weighs quite a bit and it's not from the quality of the paper pages. If the care had been taken to print the photos on better paper and perhaps less text quantity, it would be a 5 Star.rating/ It's hard to put out a coffee table book when the quality and color of the photographs are not that good visually.

I love this book and have recommended it to others. If you like to travel or to live vicariously through pictures, and you love cinematographic photos, this is the book for you. Also, the text is unlike many table books as it is brief and gets to the point relatively quickly so it is not like reading an encyclopedia (or Wikipedia for that matter). I love this book and envy the author for what had to be unforgettable and amazingly unique exposure to those photographed. I like that they were stylized photos as many tribal people live quite modern lives, yet continue to honor their culture (like the Māori, whose warrior past is not too dissimilar to that of the Zulus, who were not photographed). I just wish I could have been there with him, but perhaps this is as close as I will get to some, even though I have been a visitor to many countries photographed.

I cannot say enough good thing about this book. It is the finest pictorial book of native peoples of the world I have ever seen.I am an art teacher and am constantly pushing my students to think beyond themselves. The natural beauty and majesty of the people photographed for the pages of this , large and heavy, book remind us all of what is really at stake when we live without thought of others.I have bought 4 copies of this book this week. One for my studio as reference, 3 as gifts to my older apprentices. So the language is a bit more formal and strange compared to contemporary writings. But it's very readable. He explains the thought process behind his opinions. They're very logical. Mill was an atheist and decidedly anti-Christian, and I state this for those who need to take this into account before reading an essay on world view. He clearly states that protection from government tyranny is not enough; there is also the tyranny of popular opinion toward unpopular opinion, and that people should be protected from this as well. Timely and relevant. Warning: the book is short, but it is not an "easy read." Well worth it nonetheless.

I ihave read Mill's On Liberty three times now. The Bromwich and Kateb version is the most helpful, as we not only get to read Mill's essay, but 6 supplementary essays - two "introductions" and four sometimes critical "reinterpretations" by respected theorists.Milll's basic point is simple: people should be left free to think and do as they please unless what they are doing causes actual harm to others. Mill's essay is spent both giving reasons for this principle, and exlporing what the principle means in practice.He offers a plurality of reasons for his libertarian ideas, some utilitarian in nature and some based on (what some might call) natural law. Not only does freedom of action and thought encourage innnovation, keep public discussion vigorous, and lead to a more effective social network than government incursion, but people just-plain prefer directing their own lives to being directed from outside.Mill gets into sticky territory, however, when he talks about the libertarian principle in concrete terms, as his distinction between what is private and what is public is often less clear than he might want. Should persons be free to tell others to do harm to themselves? Yes. Should parents be free not to educate their children? No. Should "vice-merchants" like bars, gambling parlors, and pornographers be free to conduct business without heavy government regulation? No. Should people be free to marry a plurality of spouses? If mormon, yes. If British, no.My biggest criticism - and a criticism offered in Richard Posner and Jeane Bethke Elshtain's essays - is that Mill is all over the map when his principle is "put to the real world" because the distinction between public and private is just-plain fuzzy. Another interesting criticism, brought up in Elshtain's essay, is that Mill demonstrates a very unjustified bias in favor of experiment over tradition (where the former seems always presumed inferior to the latter).In short, I like Mill's essay but see it as an edifice built on not-quite-solid sand. Mill relies on seperate categories, public and private, that are just not clear and distinct enough to be distinct. (While Dewey may have gone too far in the "all acts are social" direction, I think Dewey hit closer to the truth.) This is why the six supplementary essays in this edition are a nice touch.

About the Author

Dr. David T. Allen is the Gertz Regents Professor of Chemical Engineering, and the director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Resources, at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the author of multiple books and hundreds of scientific papers in areas ranging from coal liquefaction and heavy oil chemistry to the chemistry of urban atmospheres. The quality of his work has been recognized by research awards from the National Science Foundation, the AT&T Foundation, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors, and the State of Texas. The findings from his research have been used to guide air quality policy development, and he has served on the U.S. EPA’s Science Advisory Board and the National Research Council’s Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology, addressing issues at the interface between science, engineering, and public policy. For the past two decades, his work has also focused on the development of materials for environmental education, including coauthoring the textbook Green Engineering: Environmentally Conscious Design of Chemical Processes. He has won teaching awards at the University of Texas and UCLA. Dr. Allen received his B.S. in chemical engineering, with distinction, from Cornell University in 1979. His M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering were awarded by the California Institute of Technology in 1981 and 1983. He has held visiting faculty appointments at the California Institute of Technology, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Department of Energy.   Dr. David R. Shonnard is Robbins Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University and director of the Sustainable Futures Institute. He received a B.S. in chemical/metallurgical engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1983; an M.S. in chemical engineering from the University of California, Davis, in 1985; a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, in 1991; postdoctoral training in bioengineering at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 1990 to 1993; and he was a visiting instructor at the University of California at Berkeley in 2003. His experiences in life-cycle assessment (LCA) methods and applications include a one-year sabbatical at the Eco-efficiency Analysis Group at BASF AG in Ludwigshafen, Germany. He has been on the faculty in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University since 1993. Dr. Shonnard has more than twenty years of academic experience in sustainability issues in the chemical industry and Green Engineering. He is coauthor of the textbook Green Engineering: Environmentally Conscious Design of Chemical Processes, published by Prentice Hall in 2002. His current research interests focus on investigations of new forest-based biorefinery processes for production of transportation fuels, such as cellulosic ethanol and pyrolysis-based biofuels, from woody biomass using recombinant DNA and other approaches. Another active research area is LCA of biofuels and other biorefinery products to determine greenhouse gas emissions and net energy balances. He has contributed to National Academy of Sciences publications on green chemistry/engineering/sustainability in the chemical industry. Dr. Shonnard has coauthored 70 peer-reviewed publications and received numerous honors and awards for teaching and research into environmental issues of the chemical industry, including the Ray W. Fahien Award from ASEE (2003). He is a recipient of the NSF/Lucent Technologies Foundation Industrial Ecology Research Fellowship (1998) for research that integrates environmental impact assessment with process design.

I got this for a college course in sustainable engineering. I like the author's examples. Life Cycle Assessments are hard to quantify because it's all about where you draw the boundary conditions. I think the author does a great job of not getting too carried away, but including the right amount of components.Also, the book reads very easy, like a book should. Some engineering books read more like technical journal articles. This book starts from the absolute basics and works up from that.

Year five continues the high standard of the past four years. A great series is rushing toward its conclusion.

2nd of the last 8 books that i purchased in the Injustice story arc that have had bent covers or pages. The story is fantastic and worth a read. But replacements may be in your future so you may have to wait longer to read. That being said 6 others were in otherwise perfect condition.

I'm a superman fan. Have been for years. And while I hate to see him be a bad guy, it does work. This entire series has been like Elseworlds on crack. Just a ready fun series.

I can’t get enough of this series

Engaging and thought-provoking a different look Superman and Batman. Really fun to read. Makes you want to see how it will all end.

Amanda Bath tells the story of the Johnsons Landing slide in great detail. It's personal, and at the same time, it's universal. She describes the losses she experienced; and then, not content to stop at her own story, relates them to the bigger issues of grief and how we move on. Where do we go from here? How do we live after we lose what or whom we love the most? Johnsons Landing really WAS idyllic, as perfect as a place can be, and now, for our purposes, it is gone.A raw, honest memoir, a meticulous history, an emotional roller coaster, leaving me to wonder, like any well-told story, what would I do?

This book tells an amazing story and details the variety of personal responses to a disaster of this magnitude. In a very practical sense, this book would be very helpful reading for anyone who is involved in emergency response anywhere. It is also a deeply moving description of a close human community living in a location whose beauty defies description.

Very good backing tracks. Nice simple solos with repeatable lines (motifs) melodically simple building blocks to use in creat in your own solos. Perfect for hobby jazz enthusiastslike myself. l imagine better players with a sense for tasteful supportive attitude for playing as a part of their style would also enjoy this selection.

Be aware that the CD that comes with it has "play along" software. It does not work with modern Mac OS X. Only works with PowerPC-based Macs, not Intel Macs. The book I have was published in 2004. Wish there was an updated CD. It has software (works on my Windows PC) that will allow the tracks to be played back at any tempo.
