About the Author

Michael Paluszek is the co-author of MATLAB Recipes published by Apress. He is President of Princeton Satellite Systems, Inc. (PSS) in Plainsboro, New Jersey. Mr. Paluszek founded PSS in 1992 to provide aerospace consulting services. He used MATLAB to develop the control system and simulation for the Indostar-1 geosynschronous communications satellite, resulting in the launch of PSS' first commercial MATLAB toolbox, the Spacecraft Control Toolbox, in 1995. Since then he has developed toolboxes and software packages for aircraft, submarines, robotics, and fusion propulsion, resulting in PSS' current extensive product line. He is currently leading an Army research contract for precision attitude control of small satellites and working with the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory on a compact nuclear fusion reactor for energy generation and propulsion. Prior to founding PSS, Mr. Paluszek was an engineer at GE Astro Space in East Windsor, NJ. At GE he designed the Global Geospace Science Polar despun platform control system and led the design of the GPS IIR attitude control system, the Inmarsat-3 attitude control systems and the Mars Observer delta-V control system, leveraging MATLAB for control design. Mr. Paluszek also worked on the attitude determination system for the DMSP meteorological satellites. Mr. Paluszek flew communication satellites on over twelve satellite launches, including the GSTAR III recovery, the first transfer of a satellite to an operational orbit using electric thrusters. At Draper Laboratory Mr. Paluszek worked on the Space Shuttle, Space Station and submarine navigation. His Space Station work included designing of Control Moment Gyro based control systems for attitude control. Mr. Paluszek received his bachelors in Electrical Engineering, and master's and engineer’s degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is author of numerous papers and has over a dozen U.S. Patents.Stephanie Thomas is the co-author of MATLAB Recipes, published by Apress. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1999 and 2001. Ms. Thomas was introduced to PSS' Spacecraft Control Toolbox for MATLAB during a summer internship in 1996 and has been using MATLAB for aerospace analysis ever since. She built a simulation of a lunar transfer vehicle in C++, LunarPilot, during the same internship. In her nearly 20 years of MATLAB experience, she has developed many software tools including the Solar Sail Module for the Spacecraft Control Toolbox; a proximity satellite operations toolbox for the Air Force; collision monitoring Simulink blocks for the Prisma satellite mission; and launch vehicle analysis tools in MATLAB and Java, to name a few. She has developed novel methods for space situation assessment such as a numeric approach to assessing the general rendezvous problem between any two satellites implemented in both MATLAB and C++. Well, now, in the final book of the series, Daddy's Curse 3, you will learn how and why Bat Erdene became the monster he was. Will you come away liking him more? Probably not. But you will have a better understanding of how much a father's authority and actions affect a young boy's future thinking and behaviour. Born into wealth and social status, Erdene was an arrogant, but highly intelligent youngster with a strong sense of entitlement, who loved his mother and revered but feared his father. Bat's father angered easily and was so horribly abusive to his wife. As he grew into adulthood, he was fueled by his father's mantra that if he wanted to succeed in life, he had to make people submit to and obey his will, and severely punish those who disobeyed. As much as he didn't want to be like his father, Bat Erdene became a monster.Those who have read the first two books will recognize some of the people whom we meet again in Daddy's Curse 3. This is my fourth time reading this author. Some of his previous works were distressing but poignant accounts of organized crime and human trafficking. This is another profoundly emotional and deeply moving read. It’s a heart-rending tale about negligence, abuse, tragedy, blackmail and finally, hope. From the outset, it must be stated that it contains strong language, explicit violence and scenes of a sexual nature.It’s worth stating here again what I had previously said about this authors’ last book: Human trafficking is thought to be one of the fastest-growing activities of trans-national criminal organizations. It is condemned as a violation of human rights by international agreements. ‘Human trafficking is a crime of such magnitude and atrocity that it cannot be dealt with successfully by any government alone. This global problem requires a global, multi-stakeholder strategy that builds on national efforts throughout the world.’The book description speaks for itself: ‘Bat Erdene was the only child of rich oriental parents. Growing up, he had everything a kid should want, except the most important thing—parental affection. From the outside, Bat had a perfect childhood, but it was another story altogether when the doors were closed. I've been an ER nurse for 12 years and I found this book to be comprehensive in the topics it covers, but to the point and easy to use as a reference (each chapter has highlighted sections titled "fast facts in a nutshell", making it easy to find the clinical pearls quickly). Doesn't matter how long you've been a nurse, you will learn something from this book. It covers the critical thinking and clinical part of triage, but also touches on the real-life issues that can affect us as nurses in our work (for example the problem of empathy burnout as a cause of mistriage). It also hits the most current issues in today's triage such as core measures and electronic medical records. Will be getting this book for all of the new hires I precept!

I thought this book had some great points. I am a new RN to the ED and this was very helpful to read prior to starting my new job. I would recommend this to nursing students, nurses starting a new position, or anyone who wants assessment skills

I wish I would have had this book when I oriented to triage 20 years ago! It is easy to navigate through and covers all of the elements of being a great triage nurse. I especially liked the "fast facts" I felt like they were little pearls of wisdom that could enhance any nurse's triage practice.

This is a great reference book for the new triage nurse. I learned a lot and I've been a nurse for 15 years.

Because no place is really safe and our church is like so many other places always aware of things that could, but we pray never happen, I keep this reference book just in case it is needed. Just a reminder of important facts and situations to be aware of.

Though it was written more than 50 years ago. The idea and theory can give me fresh insight into the utility of law.

The ultimate justification for the topics covered in this book might be that it recognizes certain disagreements about how law ought to be applied, that certain questions might be raised with any authority that seeks to apply laws in a manner which, according to Lon Fuller, seems to violate "practical wisdom applied to problems that may broadly be called those of social architecture. St. Thomas Aquinas stands for many as a kind of symbol of all that is dogmatic and theological in the tradition of natural law. Yet as one writer has recently pointed out, Aquinas in some measure recognized and dealt with all eight of the principles of legality discussed in my second chapter." (pp. 241-2). If anything, trying to impose morality on an enterprise as quixotic as the law is more likely to meet with indifference today than ever, and already in Chapter IV of this book, Fuller admitted that scholars could mean him when discussing "Law and Morals" and complaining: "Again, if this is what the necessary connexion of law and morality means, we may accept it. It is unfortunately compatible with very great iniquity." (p. 154). Just thinking about very great iniquity reminds me of what most people think prosecutors are for, and in the interest of harmony in the marketplace, I will make no further comments on this book. If only the law could always be so lucky.

It is difficult for me to deal with abstract conflicts on a theoretical level when I lack success in the kind of humor that appeals to me more than Fuller's attempt to wrap himself in the mantle of righteousness as he considers law as an interactive enterprise trying to create a context in which independent actors can go about their business without having to do anything about $14 trillion dollars that has already been spent. The Preface to the Second Edition, dated May 1, 1969, just a month before I went to Vietnam, was prepared during the year that I would have remained in Professor Fuller's Contracts class at Harvard Law School if I had not been drafted in Novcember, 1968. The fifth chapter, A Reply to Critics, prepared at that time, might as well give up trying to "trace the consequences of a particular action through the fabric of society unless that fabric itself preserves some measure of integrity." (p. 238). The monetary circumstances keep giving away any case that would be moral in outlook. As Fuller claims:one can imagine a lunaticerupting on the scene and demanding to knowwhere his intended victim is hiding (pp. 239-240)like Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald in the basement of the Dallas Police Station, if I recall November, 1963, as well as millions of Americans watching a TV network as it was showing the aftermath of the JFK assassination for those who expected to see some legal consequences of an action that changed the nature of the government within the Constitutional limits on the official actions of elected officials.A real shift in psychology noticed by Fuller:In sociology and legal anthropologythere is a discernable trendaway from structural theoriesand toward a study of interactional processes;I am told a similar shift has taken placeduring the last fifteen years in psychiatryand psychoanalysis. As for the law, . . .In this new climate of opinion,there is no longer any need to apologize for beingcritical of positivism,nor does one run any serious riskthat a rejection of positivism will be takento imply a pretension that one has established contactwith Absolute Truth. (p. 241).

The grand moment in the reception finally arrived. Two white-gloved Tate conservators entered the room with a pair of paintings, each about five feet tall. There was a moment of respectful silence. Myatt was stunned.“Ahh, the Bissières, how lovely,”someone in the room whispered.Myatt cringed as the group praised the paintings and Drewe’s taste and generosity. The two works were carried around the room, and long before they reached Myatt, he recognized the faint but acrid smell of the varnish he had sprayed on them when he’d finished them a few weeks earlier.Myatt gripped his chair. If they so much as touched the canvas with a fine brush, the paint would give way and the game would be up. A little further investigative work would reveal that the pieces—purportedly painted more than forty years earlier—had been made with modern, ordinary house paint.The reception over, the Tate brass escorted Drewe and Myatt down the winding staircase. Stopping at a landing, one of the officials pointed at a place on the wall and said: “This is where we’ll hang these two wonderful pieces.”Placing a work at the Tate was a remarkable achievement for any artist—forger or not—but Myatt could see only one possible end to what had transpired. He had survived many low points in his past, but none as low as this. Surely he would end up in prison.Once in the taxi, Myatt, usually deferential toward Drewe, exploded. “You have to get them back.”Drewe argued that if they were to ask for the paintings back, it would involve a terrible loss of credibility, putting at risk all the time he had put into cultivating the confidence of the Tate’s archivists. But he also saw that as long as the twoc arelessly done forgeries remained in the hands of museum curators, Myatt would remain paralyzed by the fear that they would be his undoing.The following day Drewe was back at the Tate to withdraw the Bissières. There was a problem with their provenance, questions having to do with the previous owners. In place of the two works, he was prepared to offer a sizable cash donation to the Tate’s archives.Within days the Tate received a check for twenty thousand pounds (forty thousand dollars) to help catalog the archives, along with a promise of half a million more to come. With this donation, Drewe established himself as a respected donor for whom the doors of the heavily guarded archival department would stand open. The historical records of one of the world’s great museums, and its cherished credibility, were about to become irreparably compromised.

A few are autobiographical accounts, some are biographies, and many are academic studies on what motivates fakers, their techniques, and how they inject their phony works into the market. John Drewe, the central figure around whom the story of this book is built, is a uniquely clever and industrious con-man. As the title suggests, his complex swindle involved creating a bogus provenance for the fraudulent works he had commissioned. He insinuated himself into museum archives where he secretly inserted the forged documentation. It was a scheme that fooled much of the art establishment for years. Worse, he so debased the archives that they could never be entirely relied upon again. Provenance is a real life thriller and detective yarn, a factual account of a singular and elaborate scam. It provides a knowledgeable glimpse into the shady machinations, the greed and dangers of a secretive art world in which huge amounts of money change hands daily. It also delves into the strange world of John Drewe, a highly intelligent, inventive, but totally corrupt figure, a sociopath and pathological liar whose life is driven by falsehoods and fantasy. Provenance is a smoothly written and well researched book, a true account of remarkable events, one that is both instructive and pleasurable to read.

Published in 2009 after the death of one of the couple of authors this in depth presentation of an extraordinary series of art and documentation forgeries ever.Years of research were required to effectively present the deeds or misdeeds of John Drewe who seem to become the characters he pretended to be - a physicist, an heir to a remarkable art collection, a Mossad agent, a consultant to the British Atomic Energy Commission and the list goes on. All the while cleverly documenting and selling "modern masterpieces" to the leading dealers in London and elsewhere.John Myatt - failed painter is swept into this whirlwind of activity and doing a reasonably good job of creating masterpieces by Ben Nicholson, Roger Bissiere, Braques and Giacometti, Graham Sutherland et al.Drewe prepared an "authentic" provenance for each work and then used "runners" to present and sell them to the likes of Leslie Waddington, Daniel Stern, Peter Nahum among many others. Upwards of 200 works were made and sold.Drewe parlayed each meeting and relationship into a probable sale.Eventually he was caught and convicted but it took hard work, chance and luck to bring him down. He was never repentant and was also not out to embarrass the art world. Rather his success was aided by the lax standards where greed is involved.Although it is a tale related to the modern art world it seems more a story of the disintegration of moral and ethical standards in our world. The authors simply and clearly describe the facts and the events but the take away for me seems much more tragic and universal.

I very much enjoyed this book. I learned quite a lot about how the "art world" works. The story is a compelling one, the research seems solid, the writing is fluent and engaging, and the book is a remarkably easy read when you consider how much technical material is covered in it. The authors have a real knack for descriptive writing, making things that the reader cannot see real and solid in the mind's eye.However, there were three things that I found frustrating about the book. First, the lack of illustrations -- it seems as if the book would have been stronger if there had been images to help the non-expert understand the ways in which the forged pieces were good and the ways in which they fell short. Second, I was left with real curiosity about what Drewe had been doing prior to this scheme. I wish that the authors had managed to uncover this information. it seems odd to me that where they are willing to make educated guesses (always identified as such!) about other things, they had no theories to advance about this particular point. And finally, I find myself wondering where the painting Myatt says he did not do came from.These are minor quibbles, and should in no way stop anyone with an interest in art, in confidence games, or in interesting well-told stories from picking this book up and getting a great deal of enjoyment out of it.

This was a really fun book! I love pictures and this book has a lot of neat pictures and stories about cruisers. I just got back from my second cruise. I wish I had had this book while I was lounging by the ship’s pool! I like this whole premise and I will definitely recommend this book to others. I hope there’s a sequel!

I enjoyed reading about what passions my fellow cruisers have and how they act on those passions. Very nice read.

Wow, just wow! I have a confession to make, I have not read a book from cover to cover in over 10, perhaps 15 years…maybe even longer! However, this book captivated me from the moment I started reading it because it is about my passion; travel and cruises.There has not been a day that has gone by in the last 10 years that I did not think, or do something, cruise related. This week as I was doing cruise related stuff all week, I was reading chapters of your book on my desktop computer. There were times I would struggle with which to do; book an excursion for an upcoming cruise, or read another chapter in the book. The book always won!As a side note, I now feel a need to do a music related cruise…I have been missing something!
