While receiving my Pastoral Theology degree at Moody Bible Institute I decided to go above the minimum class requirements on a book report and choose more of a graduate level reading. I stumbled onto this book by Philip Jenkins, an amazing author who isn't afraid to challenge and discuss tough topics. This has to be one of my favorite books written by him. I love how his unique writing style allows him to include a wealth of information on each page.

Very interesting, and lots of information.

This books examines the claims that the (mostly Gnostic) texts found at Nag Hammadi after World War II represent an early and therefore viably alternative version of Christianity compared to what has been long considered orthodox. The finding: these are not early, but late second or even third century writings, condemned in their own time, which, in the way of the gnostics, do not consider historical fact - particularly the Resurrection - to be of any consequence. The most telling part to me is that this was well known around the turn of the last century (circa 1900), even with articles in mass circulation periodicals on the subject, and the statements from, e.g., Elaine Pagels, that Nag Hammadi is an opportunity to see, "for the first time," this theology, is patently false. Even more concerning is that our modern "scholars" in that camp must know this. It reminds me of a session in a Christian ethics class at a church-related college in Iowa in the sixties, when I pointed out to the instructor (a pastor and PhD) that the human heartbeat began three weeks after conception (the topic was abortion and the information on the heartbeat came from an embryology class I was taking). The professor gave me a long stare and then said he simply could not believe it. He did not inquire with the biology professor afterwards to correct the impression left with the class.As Dr. Jenkins has shown, a liturgical and patriarchal structure was present in the church from the earliest days (re patriarchal - feminism was as big in second century heterodoxy as it is today). However, he is one of those curious Anglicans who want to be more Catholic than the Pope - he thinks this structure means that the Council of Trent was right. His idea that validation of apostolic authority is also validation of the necessity for apostolic succession is a non sequitor. Finally, he seems to be unable to let loose of the possibility that Q, a hypothetical ur-gospel, must exist somewhere, and the truly aberrant notion that the Gospel of Thomas, which has no mention of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, was somehow a means of evangelizing the Greeks before letting them in on the real story.

The main theme of this is a debunking of the claims made for the so-called "new gospels" included in archeological finds of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Publicity seeking historians have aggressively claimed that the "gospel of Thomas", etc. were created significantly earlier than the New Testament gospels, therefore making them a truer representation of the words and deeds of Jesus, and his wishes for His Church. Jenkins methodically gathers the available scientific evidence to show that these 'gospels' were actually composed much later than the ones in Scripture and were actually written to promote concepts later labeled as heretical (Gnosticism, Arianism, etc.) or to discredit Christianity itself.But like a toy in a Cracker Jack box, I found an unexpected treat in Chapter 7 where Jenkins shows how the majority of female "professors of religious studies" actually view themselves as professors of dyke political propaganda. If you are a devout Christian, you will be happy with the purchase of this book, but you should NOT be happy if your daughter tells you she is picking religious studies as her major.

This book comments on recent archeological discoveries of documents about Jesus that were written in the early Christian centuries and their importance compared to the canonical Gospels. His analysis of the media events generated by such discoveries is particularly sharp.

I have been seriously studying Reiki (Universal Healing Energy) the last few months having read numerous books on this topic and even taking an on line course on this subject. This is the third book I have read by this author (Reiki for Life: The complete guide to Reiki practice for levels 1, 2, &3) and most of the material in this book was covered in Quest’s other two (The Basics of Reiki and Self-Healing with Reiki) previous books.For me this book was a good review text to reinforce my study of Reiki. I have taken the examinations and achieved the Reiki Level 2 and 3 (Reiki Master level) at the present time as I continue to study Reiki more deeply. This 310 page soft cover book covers the following areas in five parts. Part one explains the Reiki healing energy. Part two focuses on activating your healing channel- Reiki first degree. Part three deals with developing your understanding- Reiki second degree. Part four is all about the Reiki Japanese tradition. The final part covers more steps along the Reiki path. This section deals with the many requirements of achieving the third level, which would be a Reiki master level. It also lists a number of other forms of Reiki.In conclusion, this is a good basic text for anyone interested in Reiki healing methods, but one must study the text and not just breeze over the material to benefit from the information.Rating: 4 Stars. I am new to Reiki, having a million and one questions about the healing energy and how to use it. My main focus is helping animals with Reiki, but this book is a wonderful resource, filled with information that helps you understand Reiki, understand the attunements, and gives you lots of information about practicing Reiki. I enjoyed the additional uses information, such as giving Reiki to your plants, trees, appliances, and lots of other things. I plan on trying some of these additional uses along with practicing Reiki on myself and family and friends. If you are looking for a great resource, then get this book! You will not be disappointed.

Cannot get enough of this book. I've read and re-read as the information is so helpful, so insightful. You will not regret buying. I have told all my reiki friends to get a copy cause I'm not loaning mine. It wouldn't come back!

Very comprehensive book!I did level 1 and 2 Reike, but the teachers made it sound like a very hard complicated thing that put me off for a while so I never practiced nor carrried on studying. Just read this book, and it changed my mind about it, easy to understand, explains the difference methods between the west and the Japanese, and really leaving you to decide on how you want to practice! Been practicing and loving it! That’s how important it is to choose the right master!

Great book on the healing art of Reiki. It's got everything - technical physics references, helpful tips and examples, and it's modern.

In my personal opinion this is a great book to read for more inside depth of Reiki I, II and III. Especially if you want to learn more about Reiki. I am now a certified Holy Fire Usui Reiki Master/Teacher in Rhode Island at "Inner Love and Light" in Warwick, so I know a lot more than the book offers, but the book helped greatly in the beginning and I am glad for it.

For anyone interested in Reiki or who is a current attuned to Reiki this is a great book! Lots of wonderful info to continue your learning especially after just taking a Reiki I course.

Highly recommend this guide when studying Reiki!

I bought this book for my own home to have on hand if I ever kept my godsons or nephew overnight during their baby/toddler years. They are all past this period in life so I am thinking about gifting it to someone. I never did make anything in the book. However, it is still a nice book with vibrant pictures, easy-to-read recipes, and complete instructions.

First let me say that there are MANY great sections on nutrition and how to feed your baby/toddler well with wonderful organic foods. Also, the recipes are excellent and my son has enjoyed almost all of the dishes I have made from this book. In some cases the portion sizes and methods are a bit impractical, but she includes prep/cook times and serving suggestions. The first recipe I decided to make for my son was a pasta dish (I bought this book when he was over a year old), and when I looked at the ingredients I realized it was for a SINGLE serving (for a 10 month old). So,I have just decided to make larger portions and freeze some of the leftovers.

This book is terrible! The suggestions for what to feed a 4-7 month old baby are crazy. At the beginning of numerous recipes it suggests frying and onion, potatos, etc.! Why on earth would you fry anything for a 4 month old baby?!It also suggests cheddar cheese, and strawberries for babies under one year old. I am suprised the book doesn't mention sprinkling peanuts as a garnish on top of the fried onion, cheddar and strawberries. A basic understanding of babies and nutrition should be necessary if you are going to write a cook book for babies.

Even if you do not have access to an "organic" store this book is a great recipe resource and also provides easy low cost ways to begin organic.One of the best things about the book is that the foods are quite different from what you would find in the store or at most restuarants and to see your child take to these foods (as well as you) is simply wonderful.

I loved this book and purchase it for all my friends. It has great recipes with many spices and flavors that my baby loved. I would make more than one recipe at a time and freeze. Pureed at first and then started leaving larger pieces as my baby got older. I still use some of the recipes, which are good for adults, too, and my son is 4.I'm really surprised at the low ratings it gets. I have about 10 baby/toddler cookbooks and this is by far the best and most used. I'm a cook, a foodie, and absolutely love this book.Buy it. Use it.

Great ideas. Easy to cook and yummy food! It has been fun using the new recipes for my whole family (not just kids)! It is not just for cooking for toddlers but for bigger kids also and adults. It also gives you ideas for your own nutrition during pregnancy! I wish I would have know that, I would have ordered it sooner! It gives you more than just recipes, but ideas on nutrition and how important it is! Great resource!!!

I wish I bought this book sooner! It is just simply a great cookbook with plenty of healthy recipes. The photographs are great. The recipes are easy to make. The author lets you know which ones can be kept in the freezer and for how long. I found plenty of ideas in it for my 1 and 5 year old. Definitely worth buing!

I bought this as a gift for new parents to go along with a baby food making kit that comes with freezing trays to freeze extra baby food. It will make a wonderful, organic baby shower gift I am proud to give.

I have taken a few of Tom's classes online, and he never fails to inspire. His gentle nature can be felt in this book as he guides you through the steps of organizing and creating. Be aware, this book does not cover illustration, it is for writing.

Everyone has a story. We think only professional artist can do an illustrated story. This book shows us how to express an emotion, idea, remembrance-- even it it's only to "frames" or a page. Full of amazing examples of graphic artists who's work I did not think of as memoirs, but of course are exactly that. There are many examples and guides about the process for the writer and encouragement to explore one's own style-- underdeveloped, unpolished is okay. I love this book.

I picked this book up from the library out of curiosity. I am a writer (not an artist/cartoonist ) but I especially admire artists who can also create moving memoirs with both pictures and words. Now I have to buy it as I want to go back to the inspiration and instruction author Tom Hart provides in this moving work.I love Graphic nonfiction books for kids that teach you something about history, like the invention of the PC, Louis & Clark's exploration, the Gold Rush, Ida B. Wells and others. I also love memoirs illustrated by cartoonists like Roz Chast (Can't we talk about something more pleasant) and Irene Beckman (Love, Loss & What I Wore) and Nick Galifianakas (If you loved me, you'd think this is cute) and Mari Andrews (Am I there yet? Zig zagging to Adulthood) --I admire their art all the more because they can write so well too...excelling at both illustration and memoir. (Some people get all the talent.)But I was blown away when I thumbed through the introduction, table of contents and illustrations and admired the simple, uncluttered layout of this book. Immediately, I wanted to read his graphic memoir Rosalie Lightening (2016) but first I want to give this new book of his a 5 star review...The Art of the Graphic Memoir: Tell Your Story, Change Your Life is a great read as well as a useful resources for memoirists and artists and those who combine the two mediums.Hart goes into the basics of how to tell a story, how to use metaphor, analogy, visual motif and design to express yourself ...Under a chapter entitled "Change Your Life" he discusses how the process of working on the book can change you, and how the experience retold can lead to a new, fuller experience.And like the best memoirs, it has universal appeal and reminds me of that saying "We're all artists at age 5, but then we somehow lose that gift".Hart tells a story that isn't just about him and his daughter and the monumental pain of losing her, but how writing and drawing her in Rosalie Lightning helped him kept her alive and with him ...and we witness to it. In just a few drawings we come to love her too (and him) and understand how documenting and sharing her cuteness and beauty with the world, he is able to slightly soothe his bottomless grief.He offers examples of other author/artists who found similar outlet for their grief. His excerpts from Roz Chast's memoir about the decline and loss of her parents sent me to my book shelf to re-read that Pulitzer-prize winning work... I'd bought Chast's book at one of her book signing--even before Roz spoke and even tho the bookseller at Politics & Prose warned me, "You know it's not funny...it actually poignant and kinda sad. "" I know," I said, "I read the excerpts in an article in the Washington Post, but that's exactly what I need. I just lost my dad and had to clean out our childhood home too...everything she writes about I experienced and felt too."Roz's cartoons make us feel better that we're not alone with these feelings...even her conflicted feelings about her mother's difficult temperament resonated with me, my dad had a bad temper too.Similarly any one who has lost a child feels comforted and less alone experiencing Hart's search for meaning in our awful grief.I "lost" my son at age 2 when he regressed into autism, losing his eye contact, motor skills, speech, and cognition ... where was my once happy, bouncing, engaged little boy? Why did his chicken soup slip off his spoon when he used to be able to happily move it to his mouth, noodles and all? His body was still here but I could no longer read him a book..he squirmed out of my arms, wouldn't look at it. Why did he scream and turn off the Barney videos he used to love and dance to? Where did this angry rash on his cheeks come from? Why were his ears bright red too?It's my heartbreak and story of loss, but my son wasn't the only one experiencing this thing called "the regressive form of autism." And all was not lost as we got him therapies to help bring him back to us... and learned to live with our new normal...and "Dream different dreams" as a book by that same named helped me cope.It's an experience that I know too many other families are going through too .... I'd like to tell my son Luke's story in a graphic memoir, if only I could draw!(My daughter actually can draw and when she was younger together we wrote a book of "the upsides of having a brother with autism" it was funny and uplifting and we submitted it to be published by Scholastic ... one editor loved it,but could not convince the others who felt some might interpret it as making light of a serious condition. But that was ten years ago and times have changed and autism spectrum disorder is now affecting 1 in 59 children! And now there are ebooks so anyone can publish a book yourself...My point is this book of Hart's has made me want to revisit that little book we made years ago ... and see if we can't rework it to share it with other siblings. OK, sorry, I digress, but this book does get the creative process flowing...)The thing about this book and its gifted artist/writer (his book Rosalie Lightning became a #1 NYTimes bestseller) ... is that it is SO stellar that it makes me feel like NO WAY can I draw like him or Roz Chast so ... why try?Yet, it also makes me feel like: Maybe I don't have to draw that well. Maybe I can tell a story with stick figures and speech bubbles and expressive typefaces and my own messy handwriting. (Roz illustrations are brilliant of course --we've been seeing them in the New Yorker for decades--but when it came to writing her book, she did not type her manuscript into fonts at all but instead wrote it out in longhand and published it that way --and it's beautiful and readable and somehow more from the heart in her own writing, like personal letters between friends and family used to be).Hart also shows how photographs (phew! I can do photos!) can be integrated with your drawings.There are 2 parts to Hart's book with specific exercises that will help writers and artists (or aspiring ones)Part 1 Getting started (Starting and working is scary! We think: What if I'm not good enough? What if my story is dumb What if no one likes it?Those internal critics are our biggest enemies...trick them while we get our courage and some momentum up. Focus only on the present, is his advice. "We're going to look at 3 artists who have created amazing large-scale bodies of work by focusing on the day-to-day."Part 2 Going deeperHe's so specific with his "Do this"'sHis "further readings" such as Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird (Yes, it's great) and Mary Karr's The Art of Memoir (So many authors recommend this book to me, I guess I have to read it, even tho it always sounded too depressing as I think it has something to do with her mom pulling a knife on her?? anyway, his other advice is so good, I'll trust him on this too.)I love his conclusion! The opposite of his intro is his outrohaha had never heard it called that before, clever :)And it concludes nicely, especially with this wisdom on memoir:So much in this life and world seeks to fracture us, if not downright destroy us.Through the telling of our own story, we find the signs in our life that say "I have existed, and I exist, and this is how and why."Through telling our story, we create our own meaning....It's a gift others can share, but ultimately it's a gift to ourselves.(Get this book, y'all. You won't regret it. It's priceless.If they give a Pulitzer Prize for this kind of work, I think he should get it. It's his gift to all of us whether we are able to tell a good story or not, he can help us give it a try.)

It is difficult to add anything new to what has already been said regarding this wonderful new book on Theodore Roosevelt. The book has a hefty text of 817 pages, and is the longest book I have ever read. Be patient with it. It is certainly worth the time and effort even though you may not know much about Roosevelt other than he is one of the fixtures on Mount Rushmore. This book focuses primarily on his efforts on behalf of conserving the natural and wildlife resources in the United States despite the howls of protest from the titans of railroad companies, lumber barons, and mine owners who would rather rape the land in search of a few dirty dollars. This Republican president would never make it as a Republican today. Roosevelt was responsible for creating five national parks, eighteen national monuments, in addition to several federal bird reservations, national game preserves, and national forests. Much of what succeeding generations have been able to enjoy can be traced to the foresight of Theodore Roosevelt while his detractors would willingly have sacrificed the land for a few quick dollars.This book is also about other conservationist heroes such as John Muir, Iowa congressman John Lacey, and warden Guy Bradley who was murdered in the line of duty protecting birds from rookeries who killed for the feathers. It is also full of interesting anecdotes. When Roosevelt and Muir were camping in Yosemite Roosevelt was regaling Muir with tales of his big game hunting. A bored Muir finally asked, "When are you going to get beyond the boyishness of killing things?" Roosevelt responded with a "I guess you're right." Roosevelt considered Thomas Jefferson "vastly overrated", but felt he deserved greatness for his purchase of the Louisiana territory from France for fifteen million dollars. Roosevelt also didn't care for the gasoline engine because "they scared the birds."I knew Roosevelt was on Mount Rushmore for his contributions to conservation during the years of his presidency, but until I read this book I had no idea of the magnitude of his contributions and of others who contributed as well. We can be thankful that these men lived to preserve the beauty of America for future generations instead of jumping at the chance of temporal wealth through lumbering or mining. Don't be intimidated by the 817 pages that make up the text of this book. It may take you a while to get through it, but the time will certainly be worth it.I did find three minor typing errors the author may want to correct in a paperback format of the book. Page 465 the sixth line from the top. The last word "the" is printed twice. Page 477 the third line from the top. The word "the" is printed twice. Page 644 the fourth line from the bottom. The word "looking" is printed twice. I mention this in case the author may want to make these corrections in the paperback version of the book.

Theodore Roosevelt has been one of my favorite historical figures for almost my entire adult life. As someone who has a hard time narrowing down my own interests (let alone reading list), the breadth and depth of his pursuits is both fascinating and reassuring. As someone who enjoys being outside in wild spaces, his efforts in preserving them has been inspiring.He’s also one of the most intellectually challenging figures for me. Without delving too far into politics, I generally prefer the federal government to cast a smaller shadow in the average American’s life than is generally the case. TR’s progressive vision and use of the “bully pulpit” therefore give me pause, force me to reflect, and often leave me scratching my head and short of answers. However, one area where his inclinations and my beliefs intersect is in the preservation of the commons and protection of public lands.This is the central theme of Douglas Brinkley’s Wilderness Warrior. Calling it a biography of Roosevelt, while technically accurate, sells it short. Yes, you’ll read about his somewhat sickly youth. You’ll read about his time at Harvard (and see pictures of the pretty epic sideburns he wore in his early adulthood). You’ll read about the Rough Riders and his time as a rancher. But all of this revolves around the central theme of the fondness he developed early in life, thanks in part to his Uncle Robert, for nature – and the efforts he made as governor and president on its behalf.Brinkley is a professor at Rice University, author of almost two dozen books, and member of the Council on Foreign Affairs (which is to say, he certainly doesn’t need my review to sell his book – and not just because it’s been out for almost a decade). Among his other awards, this book earned the 2009 National Outdoor Book Award.Not surprisingly, then, the book is thoroughly researched and richly annotated. If you’re anything like me, its notes section will make your “want to read list” have a bit of a growth spurt. It takes short detours to explore the lives and exploits of people who lived where the rubber of TR’s initiatives met the proverbial road. While those detours add a bit to the work’s heft, I felt it placed this focused biography – this exploration of but one aspect of a larger-than-life man’s multi-faceted personality – in a broader and richer context.If there’s a downside to the book, it’s that its length and detail might make it less than accessible to a casual reader. While I’m enough of a bibliophile and history geek to have thoroughly enjoyed it, I have to admit that it’s not quite the sort of history or biography that feels more like a story. It doesn’t always move fast, and the sheer amount of information packed into it can make it at times a slightly dense read. But the reader sufficiently interested in Theodore Roosevelt, protection of wild spaces, or both, will be richly rewarded for their time.
