I received this kindle book on my android kindle reader app. It opened without issue and was formatted fine.First, let me say, this is not an in depth book. While the photos are great and relevant, one or two sentences which introduce new words and weather principles left us hanging. For example – “A water spout is an intense columnar vortex” – wait. What is a columnar vortex? What causes a water spout? What is affected by a water spout? How long do they last? These were actual questions from my kiddo. Most of the weather events discussed in this book are common knowledge, with a little bit of lengthy sciency words thrown in. Do I need a book to explain what an ice storm is? No. But I’d sure like one to explain the science behind how they happen, where, how frequently, what happens to places they hit…This may be good for a much younger child, if it weren’t for the super long words without explanations.I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I only review items I have used, and I assure you my review is unbiased and based on the quality of the product I received. My goal is to provide as much honest and helpful information as possible to help you make an informed purchase. As someone who shops primarily online, I understand the importance of thorough and accurate reviews. I hope my review has helped you.

Extreme Weather Systems: 3rd Grade Geography Series. Extreme weather is defined as unusual, severe or unseasonal weather. A thunderstorm is characterized by the presence of lightning and it's acoustic effect on the Earth's atmosphere known as thunder. Tornadoes or twisters is a rapidly spinning tube of air that touches both the ground and a cloud above. A waterspout is an intense column of water that occurs above a body of water. Hurricanes are the most dangerous natural hazards to people. Hurricanes usually form in the tropics of the world. Blizzards are produced by snow and large volumes of wind. HIgh winds produce unusually cold temperatures called wind chill. Ice storms are characterized by rain that falls and freezes as it hit's the ground or trees, power lines, roofs etc... It's a storm that is formed by freezing rain. A heat wave is a prolonged period of excessively hot weather. Extreme heat can cause, cramps, sweating and fainting. My grandson is in 3rd grade and this book would be awesome for him. I believe this book should be a part of his extensive library. Something that should be a great read for him. He reads way above his age as he grows so does his knowledge of the world as did his mother at his age. Reading invokes imagination, knowledge from a foundational status. Reading makes the brain work where television arrests the brain function by not making any one think. I so do love these books for children and adults, making us think about what we can do and what might be if we open our minds.****I am grateful to have received this product at a discounted or free rate in exchange for a honest, fair, unbiased and non-compensated review. This helps the sellers, as well as myself maintain a great relationship and the ability to be able to continue to give you the shopper a great relationship with the seller, if there is one.****

A book for kids about weather. I am not fond of this publisher due to some really badly written and editedbooks in the past. This one has a few editing issues, but not as bad as most. I think there could have beenmore detail about each of the severe weather issues like wind speed and if it snows during a blizzard. I thinkleaving out the snow in a blizzard was a bit crazy. There is either ice or snow in a blizzard, mostly peoplethink of snow when they think of blizzards. It might also have been nice to mention the results of some ofthese things. (Like damage from a tornado or hurricane) I live in an area that gets daily thunder and lighteningduring a lot of the year and I do not consider either to be severe weather unless there is a hurricane ortornado coming with it. I have been living here many years and when I went away to college where there wereno real thunderstorms I was homesick! I sleep through some really loud and violent storms so my neighborstell me, and so do my dogs. It is something newcomers sometimes cannot get used to. We are taught fromvery young childhood about the dangers of lightening and what to do and not do. The book was too briefand not entirely factual. The pictures were fairly good, but there were no descriptions. I do not know if a childseeing a beach and a thermometer would get the idea presented. My 8 year old did, but he reads on a collegelevel and found the book to be for "babies." My older kids thought it too simplistic and that it did not giveenough information. They laughed at thunderstorms being severe weather since they were all born in thisclimate and one was actually born when there was a hurricane coming and the power went out. We sometimessit on the porch or at a window and watch the storms much as I did with my father many years ago.I received this book free in exchange for my honest review.

The book is pretty standard. It has got a lot of good info and it is pretty up to date (I purchased an older edition to save money). My biggest complaint would have to be the organization and repetition. Each chapter feels very repetitive, and can drag on and on. The content organization could be more effective. Overall, it has all the necessary material in an ineffective layout.

Bought this for hubby to study for the EC Praxis exams. He loves it and considers it a valuable resource to keep handy. FYI, he passed the PRAXIS just by self-studying, without any classes or formal training in the field.

    Great rental program

This is a very comprehensive book, and I would recommend it for future special education teachers as well as general education teachers and paraprofessionals.

Up to date and very useful!

Chapters are not included- then you have to pay more to access them on line. You lack resources usi g the text. While I don't like using online text material this one is incomplete and expensive in print format.

I purchased this book instead of the new version and saved tons of money. The information is still the same and it served it's purpose.

    very helpful for my class

The Great White Shark Scientist (Scientists in the Field Series), by Sy Montgomery

    From School Library Journal

Gr 5–8—Prepare to be enveloped in saltwater air and dizzying blue water in this latest entry from veteran author Montgomery. A tense opening line delivered by 52-year-old great white shark biologist Greg Skomal is sure to hook readers: "It's pretty treacherous right here." But as they will soon discover, for Skomal and team, the even greater danger is not seeing a great white at all. Montgomery deftly balances information and intrigue without delving into the sensational; the emphasis is always on providing unique insight into the fieldwork of scientists and the absolute patience and perseverance it takes to locate, identify, gather, and analyze scientific data under challenging circumstances. Her travels with Skomal and her journey into a shark cage with biologist Erick Higuera are evidence of a genuine interest in understanding great whites and reversing negative attitudes about them. Readers will come to learn that the perceived danger surrounding sharks does not always match reality (the prime example offered being the astounding number of Americans injured by toilets in comparison to shark-related deaths in a year) and that these creatures are in desperate need of quality protection and conservation efforts. Ellenbogen's crystal clear photographs range from intimate shots of crew members and aquatic life to large aerial overviews of the inlets and waters they are sailing on—students will be sure to stop and linger over these gorgeous images. VERDICT Exceptionally written and highly recommended for those looking to give a timely summer boost to STEM collections.—Della Farrell, School Library Journal

Kirkus Best of 2016 Nonfiction Detectives: Best of 2016 * "Exceptionally written and highly recommended for those looking to give a timely summer boost to STEM collections."—School Library Journal, STARRED review * "Readers interested in marine biology in general or great white sharks in particular will find the text informative and the you-are-there immediacy of the writing exciting."—Booklist, STARRED review * "This appreciative introduction to a much-maligned species will thrill readers while it encourages them to see great white sharks in a new way."—Kirkus, STARRED review "One minute Montgomery recounts the technical details of shark tracking, the next minute relays the steps she needs to take to be safe on the ocean, and the next narrates an all-out shark chase, as researchers on a boat and in a plane work together in a successful shark identification bonanza. This approach fully immerses readers in the field research experience, as do the excellent photographs of people, sharks, and the environment. In, on, and especially above the ocean, Ellenbogen captures the majesty of the great whites as well as the beauty and impermanence of the Atlantic barrier islands, dunes, and shoreline."—Horn Book "Montgomery’s play-by-play narration and Ellenbogen’s dramatic photos give the scientific excursion a thrilling sense of immediacy that should leave readers feeling like they’re along for the voyage."—Publishers Weekly "Montgomery goes to great, and often humorous, lengths to put the actual danger of shark-on-human attack into perspective (annual average number of people killed by sharks—11; of sharks killed by people—100,000,000), but when dealing with fish prone to devour their unborn siblings, there’s still ample delight for thrill seekers."—Bulletin

Great book for 11 year old granddaughter who is fearful about sharks. Terrific information, fun but factual data, nicely told story. Highly credible female scientist. Superior quality.

I bought one for myself...and got another who is a big fan of Greg Skomal

SY Montgomery's books are all gems!

Bought for our ten year old grandson and he loves the book so started reading it immediately.

Follow a marine biologist studying the great white sharks that live off the coast of Cape Cod during the summers and some of his associates who are working to fight the bad rap sharks have, and then go down in a cage to experience great whites up close in Guadalupe.Kids love sharks, so I have no doubt this book will find its way into several reading hands. Personally, I didn't find this to be Montgomery's most riveting writing and they spend a lot of time in a boat trying to find sharks to get photos and video of for identification purposes. It gives a fantastic picture of how long and hard field research can be, which is important for kids who really are interested in the field. However, it doesn't make edge-of-your-seat reading. Still good, but not the best Scientist in the Field book. Also a great book to read about dispelling common shark myths. The one page of stats of what is more likely to kill you is quite eye-opening (beware your toaster and toilet).
