My first trip to the South Carolina Sea Islands, in 1971, was life changing. Having grown up in Michigan, I was excited about the opportunity to learn more about southern black culture. Up to that time, I had never spent any time in the south. When I got to the Sea Islands I was shocked by the poverty; at that time, telephones, cars, and even running water were still scarce. I was stunned by some of the more remote backwoods settlements, where very little had changed since slavery. But I was most deeply affected by the rich, fertile beauty of the Islands and by the strength and integrity of the families I met - natural wealth that belied the widespread material poverty. I soon discovered that the Sea Islands were also as abundant in culture - ghost stories, animal tales, the Gullah language, plant knowledge - as they were in animal and plant life. These first experiences among the Gullah people led me to a lifelong interest in African American history and culture.

The Sea Island the southeastern Atlantic coast are known for their tropical beauty and for the Gullah people, African-Americans who descended from slavery to develop a distinctive dialect and rich folk heritage. As late as 1960, many of these islands were still unreachable except by boat, thus allowing Gullah culture to remain largely intact. Faith Mitchell, a medical anthropologist, lived with the Gullah people in the1970s to learn firsthand the folk medicine still practiced by its oldest citizens. Today, this knowledge has been nearly lost. Hoodoo Medicine describes in rare detail the medicinal plants and herbs historically used by the Gullah people. Part I includes a brief history of the Sea Islands, and the source for African-American folk medicine. Part II is a directory of all the medicinal roots, herbs and plants, detailing their use in the Gullah culture as well as Native American and Euro-American uses. About the Author

Ivan Png is a Distinguished Professor in the School of Business and Department of Economics at the National University of Singapore. Previously, Dr Png was a faculty member at the Anderson School, University of California, Los Angeles (1985–1996) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (1993–1996), and Visiting Professor at the Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College (2011–12). His book, Managerial Economics, has been published in multiple editions and adapted into Chinese (traditional and simplified characters), Korean, and Polish. He received the NUS-UCLA Executive MBA Teaching Excellence Award in 2008 and 2011. As a beginner for economics, this book is quite easy to read with good structures.Every chapter starts with learning objectives, a practical example, detailed explanations withwords, graphs and tables, and final take-away points as the chapter review andsome further discussions. Easy to follow and enough knowledge to learn and apply to real-lifeIf I need to pick some weakness of this book,First, it would be page-number. if possible, I would love to map page numbers tothose in paper books.Second, the kindle book price sells more expensive than paper ones if you take discount intoconsideration, which is a bit weird.But overall, the content is still good.

I must say the kindle version is not good. All the plots and tables are not well fitted and therefore it is difficult to follow the content. Maybe the hardcopy is excellent I do not know. But the kindle version has to be revised.

As the previous reviewer stated, there is not table of contents on the Kindle version. There are no page numbers either. Makes the book useless when trying to follow an instructors assignments. Please update!

Easy to read textbook that provides real world examples to solidify concepts that may not necessarily be obvious for even the most seasoned economics/business students.Book was pretty affordable too compared to other textbooks that I've had to purchase.

I use the Chinese edition of Professor Ivan Png's Managerial Economics in my MBA/MPAcc classes. One advantage of this book is its simple but very clear explanation of economic knowledge. The students do not need to spend too much time on mathematical details. They find the book interesting to read and relatively easy to follow. Another advantage of the book is its rich and up to date cases, covering many business decisions in our daily life. It helps not only the students to understand economic principles and also the lecturers to successfully deliver an interesting class. Now, many lecturers in our business school have adopted this book as the main text.

Chris spent the last ten years in love with his best friend Daniel who he fixed up with his other bestie Megan who then turned down Daniel's proposal, leaving Chris in the middle of a mess and comforting Daniel. Daniel never gave his relationship with Chris a second thought until he drunkenly kissed him and then couldn't seem to stop picturing Chris naked. The trip to Hawaii started off rocky and proceeded to go down hill really fast when Megan kept appearing like some crazy stalker at every event Chris and Daniel went on. It wasn't until Chris and Daniel finally confronted Megan together that they got to the root of the crazy and discovered all three of them had been hiding secrets from each other for years. Daniel and Chris had a great relationship once they both came out despite more of Megan's craziness coming out. It was nice seeing the reappearance of Larissa from Mister Hard to Get and it'd be nice to continue her story. I laughed so hard at the raptor conversation between Daniel and Chris.'I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.'

This was a fun love story where two bestfriends fall in love once the other realizes he was t as strait as he thought he was. Dan and Chris have been bestfriends since college and Chris always knew he was in love with dan but knew he had no chance with him since he was strait and was just about to propose to his long term girlfriend of 6 years. The proposal didnt go as plan and dan was suppose to celebrate with a trip to Hawaii with his new fiance but instead decides to take his bestfriend.What he thought was just going to be a normal fun get away with his bestfriend turned out to be so much more and Dan starts to discover something new about his sexuality and starts to look at Chris in a different way than before. Then his ex girlfriend shows up on the trip and things become even more complicated than before and to make things worse her parents show up also telling Dan he has to propose to their daughter again then Dan and Chris's relaxing trip turns out to not be so relaxing anymore. I really enjoyed this one. it was a quick and fun read and I couldnt put it down. It was a really cute and sweet love story between friends with some super hot and steamy scenes in the mix.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Intriguing theme. Delightful characters. Chris and Dan are likeable characters. Megan is likeable when you remember she is Chris's best friend from college and keep an open mind for her reactions. Chris crushing on Dan since college. Dan passively crushing on Chris. Megan noticing Chris'college crush but remaining silent. Dan oblivious of Chris' crush. After dating for years, Dan proposes, Megan shuts him down, Chris offers Dan support. What kind of support does Chris offer? Does Dan accept? Dan decides to take his trip to Hawaii inviting Chris. The get on the plane and find out Megan is going as well, two weeks!Will Dan and Megan get back together? Will they have a threesome? Will they all end up alone and single? Very nice story, hysterical in parts. Ms Oliver entertains, amuses and keeps us intrigued to see how it all flows out. Well done! I received an ARC from Booksprout for a review.

There were three people in the relationship. Megan and Dan were the couple that people assumed would marry, Chris was their good friend who had introduced them, helped them get together and was their third wheel. But he really had unrequited love for his college roommate, co-worker Dan. When Dan asks and Megan says no, it opens the door for Dan and Chris to realize that there was more to their relationship than they realized. This was a cute take on the trope about the friend waiting in the wings and a quick fun read.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I really like this author, but not so much this book.First, so many typos. One or two is forgivable, but I lost count after awhile. Boo.Two, awful Dan. He repeatedly put Chris into situations he knew scared him and didn’t care. As friends, we can only rely on the author to know their friendship was amazing, but as a boyfriend? No thanks.Third: Megan was a cartoon of extremes. Blech.

This was just an ok read for me, the good storyline and defined characters kept my interest throughout the entire book!

I loved the relationship between Danny and Chris but I felt like Megans storyline kind of ruined it 50% through. It just felt unnecessary to me and should of wrapped up.

I did feel it affected the way I read the story because I had to stop and figure out what and who the author was talking about more often than I wanted too. Otherwise and excellent story and the errors should not keep the reader from enjoying this story.

I purchased this book to help prepare me for the CCRN (Neonatal) exam. After reading some of the book, I wish I would've read this book when I became a NICU nurse. This book is a wonderful reference, and I love how it does into detail of the conditions: from the patho to the treatment. It's easy to follow and very informative. I will be bringing this book with me to work and referring to it while caring for my pts.

This is considered the gold standard for studying for the RNC exam. It also makes a great reference book for NICU nurses at all stages of their careers. It's very detailed and organized in an outline style format. Because of that, it can be tedious to read. I used it in conjunction with Merenstein & Gardner's Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care, 8e to prepare for my RNC exam. They complement each other nicely.

This book got me through the CCRN-NIC and my friend through the RNC-NIC so whichever test you're taking definitely use this!! Also great for review if you're not taking an exam. I still reference it often.

So disappointed. I purchased this book to help write and support my evidence for my senior nursing BSN research paper and pages 391-438 missing!! I’ve not needed the book until now in the semester very disappointed. Also I feel like this book was removed from a NICU unit and sold without permission. I’d like a refund !!! (I only starred this rating because it was required)

Love the book and the content of it.. while using it for work I just realized it’s missing three chapters Pages 390.. suddenly jumps to 430... really disappointed andfeel totally jipted!

Arrived quickly and in excellent condition. Very informative and concise a lot of information to absorb. Excellent reference for a new nurse, or any NICU nurse. I hope to use this information to pass my exam.

I am studying for my Neonatal RNC and this book is invaluable. It was sent in perfect condition; Brand new as stated on the listing.

Book is missing 50 pages! The entire respiratory and apnea chapters are missing. Very disappointed...those are pertinent topics for NICU care.

This book is great! Especially if you want to study and learn topics from scratch, get this book. It explains each topic in 6-8 pages and has example questions. After each topic, there is a test, around 15-20 questions. Each question has a detailed explanation at the end. Usually questions are harder than SAT and official practice tests. I'd recommend this if you want to study and learn the topics.Also Kaplan's book is good. I used that after finishing this book. That book is ideal to practice since it briefly summarizes the topics and gives practice tests of 20 questions.

With the exception of the the error I showed in the picture attached to this review, I really like this book. It isn't as wordy and overwhelming as Kaplan's, and it walks you through problems. I like how they don't provide info in large, chunky paragraphs that lose me at times; this book tends to be very straightforward.

I got this for a sibling and after going through the book their practic scores went up 20%. The one thing that would be helpful would be some more practice tests in the book

This book has lots of practice problems and useful explanations, but I find that the questions are a lot more advanced than the actual SAT questions and therefore not representative of the real test. For example, as I was taking the first practice test, there were at least 5 fairly challenging questions within the first 10 questions (these questions are typically easier and don’t involve advanced topics). Overall it’s helpful but perhaps overkill.

This edition provides great tools to prep anyone for the test!

Cute book with a little text on each page. For toddlers can use turtles to practice counting with the numeral displayed. As they get older read text as well as counting turtles. Be aware that Countdown is true - counting backwards from 10.

This is a great counting book for toddlers and preschoolers, as young as age 2. I'm sure older kids would enjoy it, too, as it teaches about the different animals that come to the pond (and has more detail in the back section about the animals encountered). The rhyming and great pictures will keep younger children entertained, even if they don't yet get the concept of how to count. I love the artwork and all the creatures the turtles encounter in the pond. I'm looking for more books by this author.
