This may very well be the most divisive book in the folk music community. I have found that people who think of themselves primarily as singers tend to love it because it has the lyrics to 1,200 songs. People who think of themselves primarily as instrumentalists tend to hate it, because the chords are presented in a mysterious, hard to decipher, harder to play notation that gives you no clue as to what the time signature, the tempo, and the rhythm of the song are. The separation of the chords from the lyrics in the text adds to the difficulty. In addition, since only chords and lyrics are presented, the book gives no clue as to what the melody is, so a melody player like a fiddler is out of luck. Its fans will excuse these shortcomings by telling you that to use the book you have to know the song. This makes little sense to me as a guitarist, bassist and fiddler, because if I know the song, I don't need a fake book. Other problems are that the chords listed for some songs are simplified to the point of removing the richness from the harmonies and for other songs are just downright wrong. While it contains a lot of songs, it tends to omit or give short shrift to many of the songs from the darker side of the folk tradition (e.g. songs of rage, hurt, self pity, grief...). The type in the standard-sized edition is pretty small, so if you have any issues with your vision, this book will be hard to read when it is sitting on a music stand, especially under low light. Although the font is a bit bigger in the group leader edition, these 52-year-old eyes still find it tough going. If you are a serious folk musician, you may need to have a copy of this because it is widely used. If you have a choice in the matter there are far better books out there, though they do not contain as many songs.

Reading some of the negative reviews, I think it may be helpful to point out that over-use of the term "fake book" by some to describe the book may have led to wrong expectations.Rise Up Singing is a "song book", one that is jam-packed with lyrics for many, many songs people love to sing--1200 of these songs in one book. To get so many lyrics into one book, however, accommodations had to be made. The type in the regular copies is rather small, although nicely dark which helps. (There is a leader copy with slightly larger print, but unfortunately -- at least in mine -- the print is lighter, so the increased size isn't as much of a help as it could be.)The book also has an unusual space-saving methodology that takes some getting used to. Wherever possible, repeated lines of lyrics get cut back. There is a system to this, however. You just need to read the introductory information on how the songs are typed up. Once you get used to it, it works quite well--and allows 1200 songs to co-exist in one handy volume.Do NOT expect to pick this book up and quickly play songs you don't already know well in front of an audience, however. I guess that's what a "fake book" would normally be. This is not that.So don't think of this as a "fake book." The chords are included so that when you see a song you know, you have some means to figure out how to play along. Again, to save space, only minimal information is provided and the chords are not inter-spaced between lines. What the book's chords do give you is a way to learn to play along with the songs. Just don't expect to do this the fly. Also, don't expect the book to show you the melodies, except in the case of rounds. If you want to learn the melodies for songs you don't already know, the book does contain information on existing recordings that can be found for most of the songs. Additionally, there are "teaching CD's", recorded by co-editor Annie Patterson, which give the melody for each song. Here again, though, you need to remember you're dealing with 1200 songs in the book so the CD's need to be similarly minimalist: they only give enough of a verse, chorus, or bridge to teach the song. (Think about it. Most music CD's don't have more than about 12 tracks to them. If these did full songs at 12 per CD, that would add up to 100 CD's!--but if learning to sing the songs is what you want, you don't need 100 CD's. With the "teaching CD's", the tunes for all 1200 songs are contained in just 20 discs.)While I agree with one reviewer that in some of the songs the chords suggested may miss more complex harmonies, or occasionally be just off, what I do in these cases is just mark up the book with my own preferred chording in the margin. As compact as the book is, there's still space for that. But again, don't expect this to be a book from which an instrumentalist can "fake" an accompaniment to a song he or she doesn't already know how to play--unless they're good enough to do the rest by ear after a quick glance at the suggested chord progressions. As for content, while some people may have trouble with the somewhat liberal bias of the book, if they're willing to overlook the ones they don't approve of, they'll find plenty of traditional songs to enjoy here as well. This is a great book and very useful, if you don't expect it to be something it's not.(Full disclosure: I have a relationship with the editors, which could contribute to bias, but I also do love the book.)

I remember singing so many of these songs on family car trips or washing dishes with my sisters. At first my sisters taught me the songs they were singing in school, or my parents would teach us songs they grew up with, and then I started school and learned many American folks songs and traditional songs. One of our biggest challenges was remembering all the words to all the verses - or in some cases, understanding them correctly from the recordings we heard. As a new mother, I came across this book and fell in love with it. Just about any song you can think of that you learned growing up in the US is in this book -- with all the lyrics. You do not need to read music to enjoy this book, because only the Singing Games / Rounds have musical notation for the melody line. There are guitar chords for those who play, which makes it even better for bringing along on camping trips or to family reunions. But it is really all about the lyrics -- so we can continue the tradition of singing these songs. The book is completely sourced with the composer / lyricist for each piece, if known, and has multiple indices so that you can search contextually for songs (e.g., Holidays, Work, Lullabies, Spirituality, etc.). My favorite packaging of the book is the regular sized soft cover spiral bound version. I now buy this book for families who have new children or babies, to remind them to sing to their babies and with their children, and help them avoid the "I can never remember the words..." excuse!

    Review

“A lovely autobiography, equal parts dish and pathos.” ―Vanity Fair“[Lowe] writes viscerally and insightfully...He looks back at the aberrant highs of his heart-throb days, the changing nature of stardom in Hollywood, the trade-off he has made between high life and home life, and the step-by-step effort behind his show business survival. He looked like the callowest kid in the "Outsiders" crew. Now he looks like the sturdiest of them all” ―The New York Times“I really enjoyed it...Thoroughly entertaining: the Brat Pack years, the Wayne's World years, the Alcoholic Obscurity, the Glamorous Romances (Princess Stephanie of Monaco!), the Inevitable Rehab, and the Triumphant Comeback on The West Wing.” ―Time Magazine“[Lowe's] charming, honest, even affectionate memoir is the story of strong guts behind a strikingly handsome face...A book to recommend widely.” ―Booklist“A fresh pop-culture history of Hollywood in the '70s and '80s from the point of view of the man who lived it…[Lowe] is as funny as he is thoughtful. This is the best type of celeb memoir, because its author is as interested in the world as the world is interested in him.” ―People Magazine“The world would be a better place if more stars' memoirs were like Lowe's--chatty, dishy, and with celebrity walk-ons (Tom Cruise! Sarah Jessica Parker! Princess Stephanie of Monaco! Martin Sheen!) galore. As entertaining as a Brat Pack film festival.” ―Parade

As several other reviewers have mentioned, I ordered this book for my Kindle after seeing Rob on "Oprah!" last week. I'm almost finished with it (2 more chapters to go) and have enjoyed every word. Those readers looking for salacious, mean-spirited gossip won't find it here. But Rob does talk a great deal about the famous folk he's been involved with over the years: JFK Jr., the Sheens, Daryl Hannah, Princess Stephanie of Monaco, and of course his fellow members of the Brat Pack. His fondness for many of them shines through, and he describes the relationships in such a way that I felt I'd had an honest little glimpse of each one.As a movie and TV buff for most of my life, I loved the behind-the-scenes glimpses of Rob's various projects, particularly "The Outsiders" and "The West Wing."Others may pick up this book with different expectations, but I've found it well worth the investment of time and money. Thanks, Rob, for the interesting peek inside your various worlds: son and brother, fledgling actor, Brat Packer, Hollywood superstar, and finally, devoted husband and brother.

STORIES I ONLY TELL MY FRIENDS by Rob Lowe is a memoir of Rob Lowe life from childhood thru to right after he finished his work on The West Wing. He writes about his unconventional family, his early drive to act, the celebrities he has stumbled across along with the ones he has developed close relationships with, and many of the wild experiences he has felt lucky to have in his life. I enjoyed reading about how Rob Lowe grew up. His family was a mess, especially his mother, and while he doesn't say it straight that acting was a way to escape his family and lose himself in focusing on his craft, it is certainly implied. As many of the better celebrity memoirs are, Lowe make a point of saying that no matter how hard you work at acting and how good you are, there is always some luck involved. Lowe worked hard and made sure as he had as many opportunities for luck as possible. He also writes in awe of many of his experiences, as if he still can't believe some of the things that have happened to him. I think my favorite was he was working with James Cameron to act in a movie that Lowe wrote and was to direct (it never came to be). But really, there are so many great stories and made me smile and laugh throughout the whole book. A fun book; I think anyone who reads STORIES I ONLY TELL MY FRIENDS will have a new appreciation for who Rob Lowe really is and smile because of it.

To be honest, my main reason for buying this book was that I was a huge "Outsiders" fan back in the early 80's. I always felt Rob was the best looking Greaser in the cast & as the years passed, also felt he was the best looking of the Brat Pack. I certainly didn't expect his book to be more than a compilation of stories about his life in Hollywood but it is more than that. He discusses his parent's divorce, his mother's depression, their financial struggles & his love for his wife & sons. He also gives Outsiders fans a great behind-the-scenes look into the making of that film. He is very candid & exposes himself as a flawed human being like the rest of us. He does discuss other Hollywood pals & tells some great stories but he doesn't make their celebrity the focal point of these tales or his book. A must read for those who loved the movie the Outsiders and anyone who is a fan of Rob's.

I got this book because I watched Rob Lowe on a few TV interviews and thought he had very interesting things to say.I really wasn't expecting much so I was pleasantly surprised to find this to be overall one of the best personal biographies I've ever read.I guess I was expecting arrogance and pretense and got exactly the opposite. To me his public image seemed very high brow and narcissistic. After reading the book found him to be very genuine, humble, and intelligent with a great deal of emotional depth. Who knew?I hope he continues to write honest, insightful books like this one. If he does, I'll continue to buy them.

In my opinion, Rob Lowe is a decent actor, but an excellent book writer. I came upon this book as part of my work assignment, not as a fan, so all I really knew about Rob was the roles he's been in, specifically the more popular roles (Outsiders, About Last Night, St. Elmo's Fire).Anyhow, don't let his pretty face and mediocre acting in the past fool you (my opinion of course, and he's gotten much better over the years). This guy had to work hard in the entertainment industry to get where he is, although I am sure his looks did help him quite a bit. But it's his way with words and art of storytelling that captivated me more than his blue eyes or celebrity status.I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys memoirs. You don't have to be a fan, but you may end up one after reading this book. Excellent job, Mr. Lowe!
