    Hannibal, by Patrick N Hunt

    Review

“Patrick Hunt's Hannibal is a rare combination of impeccable scholarship and good writing.  Knowing what the author knows, this biography could have been 900 pages long; instead it hits the scales at below 300, the perfect fighting weight for one of history's most lethal combatants.”  (Robert L. O’Connell, author of The Ghosts of Cannae)"The book is particularly illuminating in discussing Hannibal’s famous crossing of the Alps in 218 B.C. . . . Hunt excels in his descriptions of battles.” (Thomas E. Ricks The New York Times Book Review)"An exciting biography of one of history's greatest commanders. . . . A thrilling page-turner about one of history's most brilliant strategists and tacticians."  (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“Patrick Hunt is one of the world’s greatest experts on Hannibal. He brings that magnificent commander to life, with verve and in detail, in this wonderful book. Hannibal is must reading for all students of military history.” (Barry Strauss, Cornell University, author of The Death of Caesar: The Story of History’s Most Famous Assassination)“From opening anecdote to closing argument, Hunt’s biography engages fully with both Hannibal the legend and Hannibal the man—telling us what can and should be known about the man while acknowledging the ambiguities and contradictions of the legend. Was Hannibal a military genius or a lucky gambler, a self-propelled comet or the instrument of fate, a figure of terror or of pathos? All of these, and much more.” (Steven Saylor, author of the New York Times bestseller Roma: The Novel of Ancient Rome)"Even after the passage of more than two thousand years, Hannibal’s bold exploits, above all in Italy, challenging Rome to a duel in her own back yard, capture the imagination. Patrick Hunt, who has for decades been researching Hannibal, including much personal fieldwork on the ground retracing Hannibal’s footsteps, distills a lifetime’s knowledge and experience in this lively and compelling narrative." (Professor Roger J. A. Wilson, director, Centre for the Study of Ancient Sicily, University of British Columbia)“Hannibal relates the famous general’s story with wonderful energy. . . . Archeologist and historian Patrick Hunt distills his survey of literature about the Second Punic War into a brightly dramatic story that covers virtually every anecdote connected with Hannibal.” (The Christian Science Monitor)"Hannibal, thoroughly researched and written in an engaging style, tells the story of this remarkable military strategist.  Over the past 25 years, Patrick Hunt has walked every battlefield and trekked over 30 of the probable Alps passes that Hannibal may have used. . . . The reader is treated to a ‘you are there,’ action-packed historical adventure." (Major General Robert B. Ostenberg, U.S. Army (Ret.))“The military history is thorough and balanced. . . . Drawing on both ancient and modern scholarship, this book is accessible for the nonspecialist; military history buffs will enjoy.” (Library Journal)“The flourishes that make Hunt a popular on-air personality shine through. . . . . Hunt’s story of the doomed general, whose exploits are more celebrated than those of his vanquishers, will appeal to any reader interested in military history or strategy.” (Publishers Weekly)

As Patrick Hunt tells us in the preface to this engaging work, he has spent much of his life researching the enigma that is Hannibal Barca. Now this overriding interest has led Hunt to write a very informative, wide-ranging biography of the famous general. This is a book that makes clear why Hannibal is rightfully considered one of the greatest military figures in history, but it is also a well-balanced volume that avoids hagiography. And while it will certainly please an academic audience, the book is free of academic dryness, avoiding jargon and handling complex concepts in a readable manner. It manages to be suspenseful even when one is already familiar with the events of the general’s life—and that is no easy trick.Hunt is quite skillful in weaving together the various factors that shaped Hannibal’s success and failure, including the startling brilliance of his military mind, the influence of his father, and the political environment of Carthage with its dubious support of the general’s efforts. Hunt is very solid at explaining the faulty tactics—and later brilliance—of the Romans (especially seen in Fabius Maximus and Scipio Africanus). Finally, there is Hannibal’s considerable logistic and administrative skill, a factor often overlooked but which Hunt covers wonderfully. But for all his acumen, Hannibal ultimately failed, and it is this failure that has made him an enigma: His ability to adapt to changing circumstances had been almost wondrous at times—as Hunt makes very clear—but Hannibal seems to have lost something of that ability after his greatest success, Cannae. And here lies the famous multi-faceted question: should Hannibal have invaded Rome? Hunt discusses this question in a very nice, concise way and then goes on to explore an unhappy issue: Was Hannibal incapable of adjusting to what had become the new “game plan” of the Romans? They refused to fight him on his own terms, and they adopted the tactics he had used against them. Hunt explores this topic unsparingly and illuminates how the limitless resources and determination of Rome likely made Hannibal’s mission in southern Italy an inevitable failure. Very highly recommended.

A fantastic read for anyone interested in history, Hannibal, and the Punic Wars. I particularly enjoyed the attention to detail regarding topography, the numbers and background of the troops involved in various campaigns, and the overarching social history as Punic and Roman civilizations clashed throughout the narrative. This book does an excellent job of peeling back some of the hidden layers on Hannibal himself, a truly enigmatic character who would’ve stood out as an extraordinary individual in any era. The author’s use of sources such as Polybius and Livy is particularly fascinating when used in conjunction with known facts from the actual battle sites, such as the terrain and climate conditions. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in ancient history or someone who simply loves a good factual story that is well told.

A fascinating and very accessible history of Hannibal and his battles against the Romans. Hunt clearly knows his stuff and separates as much as possible the real from the myths, explaining why he reaches his conclusion without all the academic clutter that impedes most histories. Its clear, concise and persuasive.

This book is a very strong biography of Hannibal’s life and times. It is easy to read and clearly written. It focuses on both his life and the lives of those around him - though mostly his enemies and a few of his fellow generals. However, I found it focused more on his movements and battles, which were clearly articulated, and less on the man himself. Would have liked more on his lifestyle, his family and relationships around him. For example, the book does not explore his other generals or comrades except for out, inning their positions in battle. Also, the book could have benefitted from more detailed maps for some of his Italian movements and battles.Overall a very good read to understand Hannibal and his exploits in Europe.

I like it because the author presents the historical context for Hannibal's campaign in Italy. The book would have been better if there were additional diagrams of the various battles and maps showing Hannibal's possible / probable routes from Spain through the Alps into Italy and the many battle fields. The book provides an outstanding discussion on why Hannibal did not directly attack the city of Rome. It also presents Hannibal's campaign as one historical example when one side wins almost every battle but still does not win the war.

Well written. It was entertaining and I hope it was historically correct. Hannibal was an incredible man and I was delighted with the way the author treated him.

The legacy of Carthinian General Hannibal Barca is brought to life in this shockingly graphic and detailed account. His military tactics revolutionalized warfare and still seem remarkable to this day. An exciting read from start to finish!

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, by Barbara Ehrenreich

    From The New Yorker

This exposé puts human flesh on the bones of such abstractions as "living wage" and "affordable housing." Ehrenreich worked, for a month at a time, at "unskilled" jobs—as a waitress and chambermaid in Florida, a housecleaner and nursing-home aide in Maine, a Wal-Mart clerk in Minnesota—to report on how people survive on wages of six or seven dollars an hour. In an easy, conversational style, she brings us the daily life of the working poor and shows that their diligence and good nature cannot earn them a place to live—a social worker advised Ehrenreich to move to a shelter—or medical or dental care or, in some cases, enough to eat. In her last chapter, Ehrenreich suggests that the working poor are "the major philanthropists of our society," sacrificing their families, their health, their privacy, and their leisure so that the rest of us can live more cheaply and conveniently. This book was assigned to my son’s HS class to read; however, I’m one that benefited as well! What an amazing written piece! As a person of more affluence now due to education and opportunity, it forced me to not only open my eyes and acknowledge what has been there all along, but also remember my own time as a low wage worker in college. It’s funny how we tend to compartmentalize things and not always remember our past experiences until we are smacked in the face by them. I definitely was taking my privilege for granted and realize that my circumstances then and now are more luck than just hard work (not that I didn’t work hard; more that there are others that also work hard yet they don’t always see the rewards of that work). This book also reminded me really see the ongoing plight around me. I am usually aware and gracious and polite to all workers I meet, but can guarantee I will be more aware in where I shop, how I tip, what I expect, and look for more opportunities myself to give back and fulfill my own social contract. So glad I read this book and cannot wait to share thoughts and discussion (and action!) with my son!

I'd like to start out by saying I did like and appreciate this book. That being said I had problems with it. This could be that reading this book in 2014 we actually are in a recession, or as I constantly hear on the news "emerging" from a recession. Having worked in many a low income job myself, I did find myself a bit annoyed with the with the writer at times. One thing that I disliked was that she only seemed to spend a short time working the said jobs she had. I understand that she was trying to get a feel for the general country, but I think had she spent say a year in only one job this book could have lived up to something like The Jungle. I disliked how she seemed to think that after a short period in a job that the regular workers would have been ready to rebel. I also didn't like her wonderment that workers would not have set up a union. I don't think she was able to grasp the fear that permeates the low income workers or by that matter most middle income workers. Large and small corporations have made it into a businesses to prevent any grouping of workers like a union. Also her belief that she never met a lazy worker or which she doesn't encounter a snitch. If she'd spent a year in one of these jobs she would have come across it. There's a reason people are afraid to stand up, one of those being that people are constantly afraid of being sold out. I did not like how every time her dislike of the workplace ended with her leaving and finding a new job. Most of us don't have that luxury. We're stuck by geographical and money restraints. For most people especially in this job market the refrain becomes at least u have a job. It doesn't matter how s*** said job is. The only way to bring us out of this fear is for government to it's job and actually care about the majority, and yes we are a majority. Even as a college grad with a decent job that tends to on the best day give me anxiety problems and on the worst leave me feeling for hours at a time that I'm gong to vomit. And by decent messing that I can afford most of my bills even though more than half my income goes into paying student loans. Given that all my years of school and working my way through dead end jobs to pay for it,I now spend half my earnings to pay for said"good"job that I have. Spend a year in factory or a warehouse and you'll quickly understand the problems I had with this book. That being said it might be a good way to raise awareness for the type of person who's never actually had to.

I got this book on the advice of my pastor after I lost my newspaper job. I have a part-time job cleaning offices and couldn't believe how physically hard and mentally challenging it is, and he recommended Ehrenreich's story. All I can say is she's right on. People who criticize her method are missing the larger point; Ehrenreich shows how hard it is to make it -- let alone get ahead -- on low wages. This should be the wake-up call for people who think a job, any job, is the answer to getting out of poverty or financial insecurity. This is the only job I have while I await word on my unemployment compensation; my cleaning coworkers don't have this luxury. Most of them work at least two jobs and some work three or more. The age range is 40-late 60s. Ehrenreich hit the nail on the head in seeing how unfair this system is and how it works against low-wage workers and, may I add, this is 10-15 years after she wrote this book. I believe with my education and background, I will find a new higher-paying job eventually. But maybe I won't, and this will be life from here on. In these circumstances, that's scary.

With this quick read, you can understand the perspective of those who are facing the challenge of a poor financial situation. It clears your preconceived notions about what others' lives are like and gives you a wake-up call. This is a much-needed read for anyone who works with children, in order to better understand what their home life may be like.

This is an older book, which my book club picked as the February book. I was familiar with it, but hadn't read it . Honestly, it is an intriguing idea, but this author was condescending and patronizing throughout. Her tone was offensive to me through most of the book, making it very clear that she truly felt "better" or "above" the minimum wage workers she was trying to understand. As someone who worked minimum wage as a teenager and cobbled together multiple to jobs to make it through college and into adulthood, I felt she really had no concept about prioritizing, etc. It became very clear she'd never done a service job as a teen or struggled during college. As a result, her "experiment" fell short and she always felt the people she was working with were "other". Finally, one month for each job with trips back to her upper middle class life in between meant she really didn't get what it was like to "live" in these circumstances. Not a likeable woman and not enough time in the trenches for her opinion to hold power to me. Having said that, the afterward raised some good points.

How to Start a Worm Bin is well-written and accessible. With Henry Owen’s clear guidance, I set up a good bin in the best location and filled it with the proper mix of bedding. I was then able to quickly identify a reputable place to buy my first batch of red wigglers. Once my worms arrived, the book helped me detect the signs of over-feeding; how to maintain a balanced moisture level; and, offered specific and comprehensive tips for regular maintenance to ensure a healthy wormery. The appendices are organized for quick reference, including a FAQ section and trouble-shooting chart. My wormery is thriving! The section “Worm Composting for Kids” inspired me to invite my granddaughter to share in the experience and to gain her first scientific and ecological insights. An added bonus is the author's generosity in providing ongoing electronic links and information to those who buy the book.I highly recommend this guide to those interested in a responsible and fascinating route to making a positive, environmental impact and achieving nutrient-rich compost to boot.Owen's guide is well organized and clear, with each chapter addressing a specific component of running a good womery, addressing fully fears and concerns beginners unavoidably face, maintenance tips that assure a continued healthy bin, and even suggestions for inviting children into the worm composting experience!I definitely recommend this book to anyone considering worm composting.

There are quite a few guides to worm composting but most of them repeat essentially the same information with slight variations in the way they suggest building your bin or which one to purchase among the commercial ones. What sets this book apart and makes it the best of those I have looked at is that it discusses each aspect of worm composting in the most practical way without much in the way of dogma. Instead the author discusses real life experience, much of it his own, explaining the reasons for various choices and leaving you with a good number of options in each area so that you can take advantage of bedding options that are inexpensively and readily available for you or food options that are likewise practical for each reader. I had it on hand when I began worm composting and it gave me all the information I needed to feel rightfully confident in being successful. Highly recommended.

Henry Owen does an excellent job of emphasizing the important aspects of vermicomposting, while keeping the dialog light and entertaining. Children and adults alike should have no trouble with following his straightforward and easily understood formula for successful home vermiculture. The book does not delve into large scale, commercial methods. This one is for the folks that want to do something that is good for the planet and easily accomplished at home without spending a lot of money or adding a lot of work to your busy schedule. Highly recommend for those with an interest, as it is a short read.

From project start, to successful and happy worm bin, took less time than reading the book did. That's because the book was clear and to the point, so the actual work was quick and easy. We are now the proud parents of 1,000 happy recyclers!

I made a worm com poster from 2 Lowes buckets and a lid. Put some red wiggles in it, paper and food scraps and that's it. I had no clue what to do next. This book provide the answers. Well written extremely helpful

This book is great for starting. I have read it cover to cover at least six times and realize that I am finding more to learn each time. This book, and, access to a vermiculturist I met through the Texas A&M extension service, have made me feel very comfortable as I prepare for my first harvest. Compost production and compost tea production are better than expected.

Though a bit repetitious I found the book super informative and straight forward. Wish I had had it before I started my 3 worm bins because the info in this book would have prevented me from loosing a whole bin (2000) worms to a simple mistake. I recommend this as reading for any beginning vermiculturist.

I recently purchased and set up a Worm Composting Bin and am so glad I read this book before I got started. It is a fast, informative read with recommendations on where to purchase worms, bins as well as how to set up your own very inexpensively. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about getting started in vermiculture.
