    Review

"This book tries to encompass all 'veterinary nursing' and is designed for use by all in veterinary practice. It will be both very useful to trainee and qualified nurses alike. More importantly, it is an ideal source of information for those not undergoing any formal training. Anyone in practice who comes near an animal should have this book to hand. That includes many veterinary surgeons whose academic training may have missed out on some of the more basic requirements. The book is well laid out, making finding a subject relatively easy.It is actually quite useful and refreshing to have practical information shrouded in too much detail.I am pleased to see that the coverage of exotics takes up nearly 60 pages. All in all, this is an extremely useful book, and one that I am sure will become a standard reference in practice...How about going out and buying this book?" phil hyde, the veterinary record, September 2003well-laid-out, easy-to-read book covers the vast majority of the clinical procedures carried out by veterinary nurses in practice today. It covers all areas of nursing, from very basic restraining techniques through to the more technical activities veterinary nurses are now required to carry out... Each procedure is broken down, point by point, with the rationale for each point. This style of writing makes for a very comprehensive and informative description of each technique. Giving the rationale for each point makes it easy for student veterinary nurses to understand why things have to be carried out in certain ways. When it comes to final examinations, this will help students to give their verbal explanations much more confidently. The sections on the laboratory and diagnostic imaging are, again, written very well, and should make it possible for all veterinary nurses to carry out smears and use a microscope with confidence. The section on radiography covers patient positioning in detail, with good use of diagrams to demonstrate centring and collimating the radiographic beam in the correct location. After reading this, all readers will position their radiography patients correctly! There is not a single chapter that is not relevant to veterinary nursing today. Each chapter is well thought out, with good content. This book will prove to be a valuable educational tool for student veterinary nurses and a good reference guide for qualified veterinary nurses. Practices would most definately benefit from having this book in their libraries!" Sarah Gray VN, Veterinary Nursing, September 2003book is aimed at student veterinary nurses as an aid to their training and development in practical clinical skills. It meets this aim with ease. The book is easy to read with practical procedures written up in point form. Each step in the procedure is written clearly and a 'rationale' column explains why that step is performed... As well as clearly written text, there are excellent line drawings, demonstrating many tasks and examples of monitoring forms. All in all, this is a 'must-have' book for the veterinary nursing part of the practice library. I guarantee it will be well used. This is surely the only veterinary nursing book to truly encompass all levels of veterinary nursing knowledge." Nicola Birch, Veterinary Nursing Times, April 2004

There Is Power in a Union: The Epic Story of Labor in America, by Philip Dray

    Review

“Insightful. . . . An exhaustive and surprisingly lively account of the integral role labor has played in American life.”—The Plain Dealer“Spectacular. . . . Dray’s chronicle reads like a novel, filled with dramatic acts of barbarism and bravery.”—Maureen Corrigan’s Favorite Books of the Year, Fresh Air, NPR“Engrossing. . . . A memorable and accurate history, one that reminds us of the honorable part labor played in the quest for what its advocates grandly but not inaccurately called ‘industrial democracy.’”—The Washington Post “Ambitious. . . . It’s a big colorful tale, and Dray has a gift for characterization as he tells the stories of dramatic figures such as Mother Jones and Jimmy Hoffa, and dramas such as the Haymarket Riot and the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire.”—Chicago Tribune“One of the great values of this beautifully written book is that it shows the centrality of labor and working-class organizations to America itself. . . . Dray comes into the ring with fists flying, and he doesn’t let up for a moment. If you love Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States you’ll probably love Dray’s history, too.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Dray provides a grand context for thinking about labor-management relations in a society beset by bad will within millions of workplaces. . . . He is a refreshing chronicler of history.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune “A stirring study. . . . Packed with vivid characters and dramatic scenes, Dray’s fine recap of a neglected but vital tradition has much to say about labors current straits.”—The Washington Examiner“An exemplary history of the American labor movement, from its time-shrouded beginnings to its murky present . . . in the tradition of Eric Foner and Studs Terkel.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred)“The unending struggle between unions and big business has never been more vividly told. Philip Dray is a marvelous story teller who brings history memorably alive, and you will not soon forget the tales of murder and greed, commitment and sacrifice, that fill these pages. But this is more than history; the compelling saga of labor as a crucible for social change should prompt some honest and hard debate about what’s happening to working men and women today.”—Bill Moyers “Sobering. . . . This unusually interesting book delivers on the promise of its subtitle. . . . [Dray] offers a balanced and comprehensive coverage of a force for American progress that is now in danger of becoming a relic of our storied past.”—America Magazine “Philip Dray’s big and bold history of organized labor in America splendidly retells a story—or a multitude of stories—badly in need of retelling. The labor movement’s decline in recent decades has accompanied a great national amnesia about all that the movement achieved for the nation. That amnesia threatens those achievements, so Dray’s book is timely as well as gripping.”—Sean Wilentz, author of The Rise of American Democracy"Any union leader working to define and strengthen the role of organized labor in the 21st century must read There Is Power in a Union, a comprehensive and fascinating history of the American labor movement."—Michael Winship, President, Writers Guild of America, East (AFL-CIO)"The American labor movement has been losing ground for three decades but its history is heroic and inspiring - full of scenes of dramatic, often bloody conflict. It would be hard to imagine a better account of those episodes of collective effort, personal courage, and fierce resistance than this engrossing narrative."—Morris Dickstein, author of Dancing in the Dark: A Cultural History of the Great Depression"From the Lowell Mills of antebellum America to the global assembly lines of our own day, Philip Dray offers a panoramic narrative of the work and struggle, the triumph and tragedy, that has been the fate of trade unionism in the United States. His lively and insightful history belongs on the shelf and in the hands of all those who want to organize ourselves out of the social and economic predicament in which the nation now finds itself."—Nelson Lichtenstein, Professor of History and Director of the Center for the Study of Work, Labor, and Democracy at the University of California, Santa Barbara

#140,237 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Philip Dray's book is a series of stories of the larger-than-life leaders of the labor movement, and he tells those stories convincingly and stirringly, without speculating outside the historical record. I found the book very readable and even a page-turner. There are a couple limitations to be aware of, but they won't bother everyone. First, Mr. Dray is unabashedly pro-union. Even those who share his sympathies may be bothered by the overt way that he takes sides. For instance, in discussing the Kyoto climate-change accord, Mr. Dray reports that the UAW "cautioned the president against commitments that would unfairly hamstring the U.S. auto industry and possibly result in layoffs," whereas he describes the same position, taken by management, as the "well-oiled reaction of the corporations and their conservative handmaidens." This problem goes beyond Mr. Dray's choice of words: he almost never gives serious consideration to positions critical of unions. The second limitation to his work is that it is almost exclusively narrative. He tells exciting tales, but discusses only in passing the economic and social forces that form the backdrop for the successes and failures of the labor movement. Nevertheless, it's an engrossing book and a great story.

I got the book used and it came in good shape. I was surprised at the depth and detail the author provides. The writing style is engaging and He covers the Good the Bad and the Ugly or organized labor history. From time to time you see other social agendas tie themselves to the labor movement, sometimes the result is good and others were disastrous. A great appreciation for the early role women's leadership played in organizing labor is provided. This is a serious read almost 700 pages.

Philip Dray's powerful book lives up fully to its subtitle -The Epic Story of Labor In America. Few books move with the power and ease of "There is Power In A Union."Filled with unforgettable characters who claim monumental places in American history, Dray captures the personalities that carved the labor movement into the annals of American history. Bill Haywood, Mother Jones, Elizabeth Flynn, Albert Parsons, Joe Hill, Frank Little: some of them died, all of them made huge contributions to give American workers the benefits they have today. The unions may not be the powerful forces they once were in American history, but this book stirs up the ghosts and brings the historic battle between labor and capital back to life. I have read lots of history - few books stand up to the splendid work of this one. It is impossible to appreciate the anatomy of the labor fight in America without reading this book.

The story's amazing and this book tries hard to tell it. And that's the thing: the author tries too hard, the subject getting pounded rather than stroked. The history of organized labor in America is one that aches to be written in a way that the work becomes a bestseller, the words inspiring conversation. Here's a workman's effort that is valuable because there's so little else on the subject.

I love this book. It is full of so much fascinating, important information. I feel like it's a crime that they don't teach most of this history in grade or high school. This is important history. Really great if you've read A People's History of the US by Howard Zinn and want more on labor.Fascinating stuff on Frances Perkins, the first woman in the US cabinet, and other people and movements.I read it from the library, but loved it so much that I wanted to order myself a copy that I could keep and look back at to refresh my memory.I'm not the fastest or the slowest reader and it took me about 3 weeks to read the almost 700 pages.

A must read for anyone interested not only in Labor issues, but in the callous attitudes of employers and the courts; unfortunately they haven't changed. But the laws president Roosevelt enacted did change the working conditions FOR ALL WORKING PEOPLE, unionized or not. Those who aren't unionized are just free-riders on the monumental sacrifices by union members to give us the 40-hour work week, prohibition of child labor, safety measures in the work place, compensation and unemployment insurance, paid vacations and so much more.We take these conditions for granted today, but when Unions started to organize, the workers were treated worse than slaves. - A must read!

This author is not a professional writer, but he is as skilled an observer and story teller as any reader could ask for. And he has an extraordinary vault of life experiences to pass along.Married and a father while still in high school, he worked as a transport orderly at Metropolitan Hospital in St. Louis, MO while training as a respiratory therapist. He was a sales rep for medical supply companies for 25 years, spending most of his time in operating rooms. He worked for a company which solicits, collects, and prepares human bones and tissue for transplants. And finally he returned to school to be re-certified as a CRT and now works with a home health agency. He had his eyes wide open all the time. Some of his stories are hilarious, some are tragic, and some will make you a bit queasy if you don't have a strong stomach. All of them shed light on the amazing scope of modern medical care and the sometimes eccentric individuals who work in it. As a teenage orderly, he became aware of the dark humor and seeming disinterest used by even the most dedicated doctors and nurses to cope with the pressures of their work. Although he encountered some duds, his admiration for most medical professionals is obvious.I was particularly interested in the fact that he started his career as a CRT at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, a Catholic institution started in 1839 when a small group of nuns came to nurse victims of a terrible cholera epidemic. In the early 1970's the sisters still ran the joint with iron fists and the philosophy that the PATIENT always came first. Today, St. Bartholomew's no longer exists. I suspect that it went the way of the Catholic hospital in my town, which was recently sold to a large corporation. The "P" that comes first now is not PATIENT, but PROFIT.Mr. Frost has had a front-row seat in American medical care for over forty years. His story is fascinating.

When I read books like this I'm amazed at the author's memories of situations from long ago. I often wonder if they are true or embellished. I wondered that while reading this book, but finally decided to just read and enjoy the stories. It wasn't a page turner, but I did enjoy the variety of stories as the author moved into different jobs just on the perimeter of the medical field. I enjoy reading stories recounting medical issues, and I usually enjoy some detail as I love to learn. This book had little detail as the author was on the fringe of the situation, yet it was still interesting with the author adding an observers thoughts. I would recommend this book for light, interesting reading by someone looking into medical situations from the perimeter.

Hilarious! Not the kind of book I would normally pick out for myself, but I'd met the author so decided to read the book. Interesting, entertaining, but not for the squeamish. Don't read this book if you've recently lost a loved one, especially if they were an organ donor.

He shared some interesting stories: some of them quite hilarious. It is always fascinating to get into the minds of medical type persons.

An empathetic and caring look into the unlimited personalities and wonder of the whole enveloping and multi levels of the medical world.Humor is offered in the very beginning and the book grabs one’s interest right away. What an opportunity the author experienced to be part of and indeed observer of the healing and mending cacophony of medicine. To traverse the outskirts makes one more valuable and understanding in medical situations.

I laughed myself silly in places, I held my breath in others. Mr. Frost is a skilled story teller, made all the more compelling because it is true. I really enjoyed the book except for one tiny detail. Mr. Frost used the word less, as in "no less than six..." and the appropriate word in that situation is fewer. He made that mistake several times.

As a retired home health nurse in rural Michigan, so many of the stories in the latter part of the book resonated with me, and I realized that I too had the philosophy of making a difference, no matter how small, in my patient's lives. A well written book, with good insight. Thank you Gregory Frost.

This is a remarkably good book. I was asked to check out this book by my son in law who worked with the author during his respiratory training so I checked it out. It was a very enjoyable read. I read a lot of books most on deep and subjects with arrogant authors. This book reads like a water cooler conversation. Who knew that stuff that happens in hospitals could be so interesting. PS I'm trying to find print copies to give to friends that don't have readers.

This factor is one of some reasons that make many people primarily wish to read this publication. This piece contains essentially anything and everything the reader will want to know about the final weeks of the Pacific War and the run-up to Japan's tortured decision to surrender. As such it is fascinating, and the fact that this book is very well-written makes it hard to put it down. The book notes a number of fascinating themes. Firstly, the Japanese emperor had a lot more power than he admitted to in the post-war era. The notion that Hirohito did not have a direct hand in planning Japan's aggression is simply incorrect. And when Hirohito decided to surrender, Japan surrendered.Secondly, and most fascinating to me, is the odd political structure of World War Two Japan. Essentially the military constituted the controlling branch of government, and civilian rule was largely, although not completely, subordinate to it. But it goes even further than that, and to the American reader (or for that matter, the modern Japanese reader) it gets weirder than that. For within Japan's military, especially the Army, there was a strange culture of insubordination. Relatively junior officers posed a continuing threat of assassination against senior officers and Japanese politicians who they deemed to be insufficiently aggressive or militant. Thus any peace faction within the military-government complex within Japan was in constant danger of elimination by assassination. Given the legendary savage discipline within the Japanese military it seems odd that this kind of indiscipline would exist in the military, but exist it did. This book brings out the fact that the Japanese government prior to the end of the war was a complex web of competing forces and interests, and it was very difficult for it to reach a consensus on a matter so momentous, and which so cut against the grain, as the decision to surrender. Here, the Japanese government can be seen to be a study in dysfunctionality, because rarely or never has a country been so thoroughly vanquished as was Japan in 1945. To the modern reader the decision to surrender seems obvious. But at the time reaching such a decision, even in the face of the threat of continuing atomic bombing (and even more deadly conventional bombing) was almost beyond the capability of Japan's government. This is an excellent well-written piece about a fascinating subject. Highly recommended. RJB.

It must be remembered that this book was written in 1967. Since then however, the death of Hirohito has revealed many primary sources which indicate that the emperor and his family were much more implicated in the conduct of the war than the view promoted by Mac Arthur's propaganda. Some authors like Yoshiaki Yoshimi even discovered that Hirohito personally authorized the use of chemical weapons against civilians. For a much more updated study, you should read «Hirohito and War: Imperial Tradition and Military Decision Making in Pre-War Japan» by Peter Wetzler, «The Showa emperor 15 years war» by Akira Fujiwara, «The Showa emperor as commander in chief» by Akira Yamada, «Hirohito And The Making Of Modern Japan» by Herbert Bix or «SHOWA : CHRONICLES OF A FALLEN GOD: Paul-Yanic Laquerre» by Paul-Yanic Laquerre.

This book was a revelation! When I spotted the deal on amazon, it looked interesting, as I enjoy WWII history. But talk about over-delivering. I thought it would be primarily about the dropping of the bomb and the days before and after. It was, but so much more. Craig does an excellent job of delivering a complete story that included the political and military situation leading up to and after the bombs were dropped. He also delivers chilling detail about not just people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and their ordeal, but situations that happened well away from the bomb sites as the Japanese army and it's leaders faced the end of the war, and the treatment of Allied POWs and special forces behind the lines. The book, of course, ends with the story of the surrender documents, which was a drama in and of itself. Overall, this was one of the best books on the end of the war in the Pacific that I've ever read - highly recommend!

I have read three versions of these events, The abridged Time - Life version, the Japanese were just misunderstood John Toland version, and this one. This is insightful, well-researched, and in many ways more compelling than what has been written before. By devoting an entire book to the last days of the Pacific War, William Craig is able to look in detail at the various personalities, their attempts at sending out peace feelers to the Allies, and their dilemma at trying to keep their efforts from the radical elements in the military and government. He never addresses the question of if the bomb was necessary to end the war, but instead provides the information and lets the readers reach their own conclusions. In this way, he succeeds and clearly demonstrates that the question is not as cut and dried as proponents on either side would have us believe.
