Interesting and very visual story of the preparation for the moon landing of 50 years ago. For those wanting the back story of how astronauts trained for the moon walks, read this brief, but informationn-filled book.

Nearly 50 years after the Apollo moon landings, after all the books written about it, you might imagine that nothing new could be said about it. But astronomy historians Kevin Schindler and William Sheehan have given us a fascinating look at a mostly unknown chapter of the story. The astronauts did some of their most important geology training in the varied and famous landscapes of northern Arizona, at Meteor Crater, at the Grand Canyon, at Sunset Crater National Monument, at an artificial moonscape blasted out of a lava field, and at Lowell Observatory. At first the astronauts were bored with learning geology, until their tutors decided to take them for a two-day hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, which got them hooked on geology. Schindler and Sheehan have dug up some very rare (indeed, unknown) photos that show the astronauts figuring out everything they would need to know on the moon. This book is a must for any Apollo history enthusiast.

Playing with the Edge: The Photographic Achievement of Robert Mapplethorpe, by Arthur C. Danto

    From Publishers Weekly

The erotically candid photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe, who died of AIDS in 1989, became the focus for the controversy over federal funding of the arts. Danto, professor emeritus of philosophy at Columbia and an art critic for the Nation, proclaims that Mapplethorpe produced "some of the most shocking and indeed some of the most dangerous images in modern photography, or even in the history of art." While acknowledging the ostensibly pornographic content of many of Mapplethorpe's photographs, especially his sadomasochistic pictures, Danto argues that the work transcends pornography because of the "moral relationship between subject and artist," a core of trust that made his photographs explorations, risks and revelations. Mapplethorpe's subjects, he writes, are touched with a beauty and transcendence that lift them above their tawdry surroundings. Danto won the 1990 National Book Critics Circle prize for criticism for Encounters and Reflections. Illustrated. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

    From Library Journal

Describing and dissecting Mapplethorpe's oeuvre and place in art history might be given as an entrance exam for aspiring critics. Perhaps no other contemporary photographer has been so widely written about, yet virtually no one seems capable of addressing the whole of his work. Supporters too often ignore the uncomfortable content or discuss the beauty of contradiction, while detractors make little effort to go past a superficial reading or ignore the work altogether to focus on the individual. With characteristic lucidity, Danto, art critic for The Nation, brings the whole of the man and his multifaceted works into focus in the title essay here. That essay is a reprint from Mapplethorpe (Random, 1992), however, brought together with a brief introduction discussing the National Endowment for the Arts-controversy and a 1988 (read precontroversy) review of a Mapplethorpe show. Libraries already owning the Random House illustrated book need not purchase this title for the addendum; libraries that lack that catalog should purchase it to give patrons a chance both to see what the fuss is about and to read Danto's illuminating words.?Eric Bryant, "Library Journal"Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Arthur Danto's essay is very enjoyable and is as smart as anything he's written elsewhere. By the time I was old enough to really be aware of Mapplethorpe's work, the controversy was already in full swing, so it's very interesting to experience it through Danto's story of seeing the famous show before the media went nuts. The photographs are remarkable, which is to be expected.

    love it!

The three essays here, along with 29 of Mapplethorpe's photographs, provide an invaluable opportunity to address the work in a reasoned and engaged manner. In some important sense, it is no longer possible to experience the work of Robert Mapplethorpe as directly as one might have in 1988, for now "the images have become celebrities," made notorious, even, by the legal and moral controversies that have so prominently surrounded the work. (5) More importantly, however, Danto attempts to answer the question of how to look at art, particularly difficult or "awkward" art such as Mapplethorpe's, without oversimplifying what is seen. (93)In the main body of the book, the critical essay of the same title, Danto's seriousness avoids no questions, but thankfully acknowledges the ultimate futility of asking whether such work is art or pornography. This false disjunction results from the failure to hold together both form and content when looking at art. For Danto, art is the transcendence of form and content; it is both and neither, for it moves beyond both while in some sense preserving them in the work. Although Danto needlessly complicates matters with his use of the terminology of Hegel's dialectic to articulate this transcendence, his discussion is clear enough otherwise. This is best seen in his analysis of the respective testimonies of the legislators and the experts at the Cincinnati trial in which the Contemporary Arts Center and its director, Dennis Barrie, were ultimately acquitted of pandering obscenity and child pornography. Danto shows that while the legislators saw the content and ignored the form, the art experts for the defence saw the form and ignored the content. Though this resulted in the acquittal, Danto rightly emphasizes that for Mapplethorpe, the work was all about making pornography that was art; he "literally became a pornographer with high artistic aims." (78) In Mapplethorpe's words, a work can "be pornography and still have redeeming social value. It can be both, which is my whole point in doing it-to have all the elements of pornography and yet have a structure of lighting that makes it go beyond what it is." (89-90) This attempt to "go beyond what it is" both illustrates Danto's conception of art as transcendence and defines Mapplethorpe's work in particular as a "playing with the edge." (77)Danto identifies trust as the constant attribute of Mapplethorpe's work which allows the form and content to remain together. "The moral relationship between subject and artist was a condition for the artistic form the images took. The formalism was connected to the content through the mediation of that moral relationship." (79) This trust is attested to by the formal quality of the images, in that they are titled with the subjects' names, posed and lighted in formal abstraction, and clearly constitute something the subjects have allowed, thus presenting the subjects as themselves, but not candidly, rather as they have agreed to be presented. (39) This is why acts of sex are themselves generally not depicted, for here the formalism cannot be maintained. In Mapplethorpe's work, however, there is always the danger of losing this formal control and going "over the edge." (79) It is not just a question of sex and the vulnerability inherent therein, but of danger and violence. For Danto, "a presumption that one's partner could be trusted . . . is the basic connection between sex and love." (41) He ties this trust to "the spontaneous human appetite for feeling danger and being protected at once . . ." (42) The combination of sex, danger, and violence, when contained by formalism through trust, is evident not only in the overtly sexual or violent works. Indeed, Danto is perhaps at his literary best in his discussion of these elements in relation to Mapplethorpe's flowers, fruits, vegetables, and finally the portraits of statues.Danto's discussion of Mapplethorpe's work is frank, clear, and engaged. In neither oversimplifying the seriousness of the issues nor avoiding the questions raised by the work, he nonetheless leaves open its moral status. This is a great benefit. When it is a matter of "playing with the edge," different people will ultimately experience such an encounter differently. Indeed, this frames what may be the most problematic aspect of looking at Mapplethorpe's work: "It is supposed to be shocking. When morality changes so that it is no longer shocking, Mapplethorpe's intentions will fall away into incomprehensibility." (112) Although his assessment of the historical importance of this work--and that of the seventies in America generally--will surely not persuade everyone, the main achievement here is that Danto gives the reader solid handles by which to grapple with a difficult body of work.

Danto is a perceptive and knowledgeable art critic whose text is worth the price of this book. The photos are well printed and carefully chosen to illustrate the essays. As an introduction for newcomers to Mapplethorpe this book is perfect. HOWEVER I purchased this book used on this website and found upon receipt two of the plates of the more controversial prints had been RIPPED, not cut, out of the book with great force, loosening the binding. If the jerk who did it ever reads this: Arthur Danto's descriptive talent almost compensates for the visual loss so you should have defaced the words as well. And shame on the bookseller who I believe knowingly sold this damaged volume without disclosure. My decision to keep this book comes from my bibliophilic heart- a book damaged in just this way epitomizes our society's heavyhanded sexual prudery. It's a collector's item, almost a sculpture. Now if the brute had only signed it...

    Review

"Property matters a great deal and getting it right is crucial. Debbie Becher nails it. Eschewing abstractions and the fulminations of libertarians and leftists alike, her excellent book captures how real people understand and evaluate government taking. The concept of investment that she develops offers important and challenging insights for policy makers and property theorists alike." -Nicholas Blomley, Professor of Geography, Simon Fraser University "A powerful challenge to the conventional view of property in social science, Becher shows that people see property in a complex and social manner. This pioneering study demonstrates how -- rather than treat property solely as a container for economic value or as a bundle of rights -- people also invest their hopes, cares and emotions into it." -Richard Swedberg, Professor of Sociology, Cornell University "How to respond to the problems posed by derelict lots and vacant buildings is a question with which almost every city government grapples. Becher's analysis cuts through the familiar ideological slogans about government and private property to provide a deeper understanding of the political, economic and social forces driving urban redevelopment efforts. The result is a challenging and unexpectedly hopeful story with lessons that extend well beyond Philadelphia." -Eduardo M. Peñalver, Allan R. Tessler Dean of the Cornell Law School "Becher's research is substantial, and a wonderful combination of quantitative and qualitative. Though she does offer a pretty solid set of recommendations for predicting when there's going to be conflict about the use of eminent domain and crafting policy to avoid it, this analysis has implications far beyond that. Really, this novel understanding of property and investment and what the government's legitimate role is understood to be in relationship to that investment could inform, and probably improve, any kind of redevelopment or revitalization effort, especially one that might involve some displacement. For that reason, I suggest that everyone in the community development field could benefit from learning the broader lessons Becher has teased out of a couple decades of Philadelphia eminent domain cases for us." -Shelterforce, National Housing Institute "The book leaves one with much to think about... Perhaps most thought provoking is the simple demonstration of the fact that behind talk of economic development, growth, and all the rest of it sit public representatives who are motivated by the political imperative of treating their constituents fairly while maximizing public goods within their communities. In this respect, Private Property and Public Power is an eminently hopeful book." --American Journal of Sociology"Despite the prominence of eminent domain as a real estate, municipal, and political tool there has been a serious gap in our understanding of how and why it works beyond partisan polemics. In Private Property and Public Power, Becher begins the necessary work of addressing this gap, offering a thoroughgoing and rigorously researched book. This book is a great addition to undergraduate and graduate courses in sociology, urban studies, real estate, policy, political science, and would interest urban residents and civic leaders near and far." --City and Community"Becher attempts to help the reader navigate the public-private dilemma raised by the use of eminent domain by highlighting the multiple ways in which public and private actions influence the value of private property... Author states that he isn't trying to glorify psychopaths, but... uh... based on his choice of words, he kind of does. There are interesting references to studies as to the why and how of being a psychopaths.I would agree that certain psychopathic behaviors are, arguably, more well-suited for our modern society. For example, the average person generally fears rejection by the others; the psychopath does not. The average person might dwell and feel defeated by failures; the psychopath does not. The average person's behaviors made more sense when we lived in small, tight-knit social groups where reputation was everything; when we lived in areas where threat of ambush by a predator was immediate and so mistakes were deadly. But it is arguable the psychopath's behaviors are more suited in the world we live in now: large cities where we pass by countless strangers we will never meet again; where all predators have been eradicated so mistakes are less costly. However, the author's admiration of many of the psychopathic traits is too palpable and a turn off. The book would have been more enjoyable if only the author wrote in a more clinical fashion.

A bizarre and grotesque salute to the minds that are responsible for every genocide, most premeditated murders, modern economic meltdowns and financial destruction of average people, exploitation of people through physical and psychological slavery, ruthless manipulation of vulnerable people, large scale schemes of financial looting, and so on. The author celebrates, with giddy enthusiasm, the very character traits which have brought about so much death and human misery. I would like to see the author's results after testing for sociopathy.

This book has some interesting points: that game theory explains some of what psychopaths are doing, that there may be a genetic predisposition to psychopathy, that psychopathy has a physiological origin in the brain, and that certain kinds of societies might foster more psychopathy. The author also makes the point that it can be adaptive in certain circumstances. But I could not stand the breathless, pop-psychology writing style of the author. There were too many rhymes, puns, and silly witticisms. It was distracting. I would have liked this book more if it did not talk down to its audience, assuming that the reader needs all this "entertainment" to keep reading. It should have been written in a more sober and scholarly way, given the serious subject matter.

Psychopaths are fascinating; this book isn't. The first 75 pages are terrific. It gets repetitive after that. There is depth to The Wisdom of Psychopaths. It gets past the cliché that psychopaths don't feel empathy it turns out they are acute observers of others, it just doesn't motivate their behavior. The review of the research on identifying the characteristics of a psychopath and their behavioral characteristics is thorough and insightful. For example: it is an over simplification to say psychopaths are risk takers; they are more motivated by rewards, but their risk assessment is normal. The main point is there are characteristics of psychopaths that, in certain contexts, are beneficial. Psychopaths are cool under pressure. The calm a psychopath feels during stressful situation is similar to the way an expert responds. Society may be stronger with psychopaths; they are leaders and can be effective against outsiders. After reading the book, I didn't feel like I could emulate psychopaths and start personally reaping the benefits. I am more trusting of my psychopath spidy-sense - it turns out that chill is fairly accurate. I am now suspicious of charmers. The thing that ruins the book for me (and seemed to create the repetition) was the way the author used his quest for knowledge as the narrative for the book. Academic research is dry, the trend is to spice it use using the "story" of how the research was conducted. This doesn't work. Either find a compelling story or stick to very tight analysis.

Great gift with a funny twist!

Interesting useful perspective for clinicians working with psychopaths. Author is a bit full of himself and his writing style gets annoying at times.

Just had a difficult time reading it.

The best part of this book is the title and a couple of pages that have some value-added information. The rest is an undisciplined and rambling recounting of various conversations and speculations. The basic idea and title is gripping -- no doubt. But when you read it, you keep waiting for the book to actually start and then realize it is just wheel spinning.Reminds me of all those overrated Oliver Sachs books that needed editing and more substance to support the clever titles.
